Thank you to all who have given so generously to the 2020 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. Your sacrifice and gifts open the door of opportunity and hope to many. If you have not

made a pledge, there is still time to participate. Mail your gift to: Diocese of Metuchen, Bishop’s Annual Appeal, PO Box 4000, Metuchen, NJ 08840-4000 or give online at www. diometuchen.org/BAA.

Thank you. In these uncertain times may your generous faith & trust in God return to you in abundance.

50% of total over the goal returns to the parish !

We find ourselves gradually making our way

back into public settings and situations where we are in contact with more and more people. Prudent, patient discipline is imperative. We in New Jersey know this lesson all too well. Work projects that have been placed on hold for more than three months are finding their places on an ever growing “to do” list here at the parish. In some cases the work has been completed in the interim and businesses are awaiting payment. In some cases monies are invested and not immediately accessible. This is a most challenging time for us all. The above numbers are an indicator of this reality. Your generosity is an incredible gift to the parish and the diocese. It can also be quite a challenge to sustain it and grow it. On the surface, the numbers can be misleading. You know as well as I that in the blink of an eye we will find ourselves right back where we began. So thank you for where we are right now, for your prayer and dedication, and for your committed faith and service. Fr. John

July 1. This year we are offering a Flipped

Classroom approach. In a traditional class, teachers present material and children go home to practice it (ie, solve math problems, complete spelling exercises, etc.). In a flipped classroom, children learn electronically and then return to practice what they learned. Due to health and safety protocols connected to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year children in Religious Education will learn at home online and then return to church to practice their faith. Details will be emailed to families and can be found online at the parish website: www.churchofthesacredheart.net.

On June 29 the Church celebrates the feast day of Saints Peter & Paul. These two men are the solid rock upon which the Church is built.

Peter, whose name was actually Simon, was one of the twelve apostles. Jesus gave him the name Cephas (Petrus in Latin), which means ‘Rock,’ because he was to become the rock upon which Christ would build His Church. Bold and brash, Peter was the first to recognize Jesus was the messiah. He also made many mistakes, however, such as losing faith when walking on water with Christ and betraying Jesus on the night of His passion.

Yet despite his human weaknesses, Jesus chose him to shepherd God's flock. The Acts of the Apostles illustrates his role as head of the Church after the Resurrection and Ascension of Christ. Peter spent his last years in Rome, leading the Church through persecution and eventually being martyred in the year 64. He was crucified upside-down at his own request, because he claimed he was not worthy to die as Jesus had. He was buried on Vatican Hill, and St. Peter's Basilica is built over his tomb.

Paul, called the Apostle to the Gentiles (non-Jewish peoples), was not part of the original twelve. He was actually a Jewish Pharisee named Saul who zealously persecuted Christians in Jerusalem. Scripture records that Saul was present at the martyrdom of St. Stephen.

Saul's conversion took place as he was on his way to Damascus to persecute the Christian community there. Suddenly blinded by a great light, he fell off his horse and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” He answered: “Who are you, Lord?” Christ said: “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.”

Continuing on to Damascus, Saul was baptized, taking the name Paul, and his sight was restored. He spent the remainder of his life preaching the Gospel tirelessly to the Gentiles of the Mediterranean world. His letters are included in the writings of the New Testament, and through them we learn much about his life and the faith of the early Church. His missionary work tended to cause disruptions in the Jewish communities he visited and eventually he was imprisoned, taken to Rome, and beheaded in the year 67. He is buried in Rome in the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls.

In discussing these two great apostles of the Church, the contemporary evangelizer Bishop Robert Barron notes that they can be seen as standing for two approaches to understanding the dynamism of the Catholic Church. Peter and Paul balance each other in what they brought to the Church.

Peter represents the institutional Church, its authority and its leadership. Paul represents the dynamic spirit of evangelization in the Church, the engagement with culture, and the willingness to converse and speculate. In Jesus’s words to Peter we see the establishment of the Church on earth with a structure and leaders who grapple with practical issues. On the other hand, as a missionary, Paul began Christian communities all around the Mediterranean Sea, but he did not stay to lead them. He wrote letters to them to inspire them but he wasn’t involved in day-to-day leadership.

If we only had the energy and approach of Peter, Bishop Barron says, the Church would risk becoming petrified, unable to respond to the demands of each age. On the other hand, if we only had Paul, the Church would risk becoming a debating society, with nothing ever really decided definitively. There has to be a balance between standing for and maintaining truth and being able to hear and engage and respond to those who don’t share our views. Peter and Paul together are necessary and it’s fitting that we celebrate one feast day for both of them. — Louise Timko, Director Religious Education & Faith Formation

The Remembrance Guild

In January 2019, the parish began offering an additional option to the weekly Mass intentions and candle offerings. We reactivated our Sacred Heart Remembrance Guild. The intentions of those enrolled will be remembered in prayer at the First Saturday 9:00AM Mass, each month for one year. The names of those entered each month will be printed in the church’s bulletin the first weekend of the following month. These names will also be printed on the pages of a special Remembrance Guild Book that will be placed in church. The Guild’s hard-cover and distinctive Mass card may be obtained at the Parish Center Office with an offering of $25 for this annual remembrance. Questions may be directed to our Parish Secretary, Lisa, at 908-756-0633 x110.

Visit the parish website for examples of how you can bring

your prayer needs to the community’s prayer response.

Feast of Saints

Peter and Paul On June 29 we celebrate the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul. These two men were the two most important saints at the beginning of the Church. Both preached in Rome and met their ends there. St. Paul was beheaded so his symbol is a sword. Jesus gave St. Peter the keys to the Kingdom of God, which is why he carries keys. He also carries an upside cross because that is how he died. He said he wasn’t worthy to be crucified right upside up the way Jesus was.

As we find ourselves returning to our churches, it is important to follow the COVID-19 federal

and state protocols set in place for everyone’s safety as the pandemic continues. You will

notice with the music provided this weekend, singing is limited and restricted for safety

reasons. You are most welcomed however to sing with full voice all of the verses at home but

the situation is different in church. Daily Mass continues to be celebrated at 9:00AM and is

live-streamed /archived. Please note that we are returning to the regular weekend Mass

schedule — 5:00PM Saturday Vigil, 9:00AM and 11:30 AM Sunday. The 5:00PM Vigil and

9:00AM Sunday Masses will continue to be live-streamed & archived. The lifting of the

obligation to attend Sunday Mass continues. If your health situation is challenged or you are

feeling apprehensive about returning at this time, please stay home. It’s OK and you’re not

alone. Please share this information with your neighbors and fellow parishioners who may

not be online and don’t know what’s happening here at our church.

Sanitize your Hands before entering the church (bring personal sanitizer),

Bring and Wear a Facemask,

Sit in the designated open pews only AND with proper Social Distancing,

Your Offering / Collection Envelope may be placed in the basket at the door as you exit,

Holy Communion will be distributed AFTER MASS to those remaining in their pew,

Exit gradually with no gatherings in the church or at the doors.

THANK YOU

Prayer For My Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are in the

Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all

things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I

cannot now receive You sacramentally, come

at least spiritually into my heart. As though

You have already come, I embrace You and

unite myself entirely to You; never permit me

to be separated from You. Amen.

ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL,

defend us in battle, be our

protection against the

wickedness and snares of the

devil. May God rebuke him we

humbly pray; and do thou, O

Prince of the Heavenly host, by

the power of God, thrust into

hell Satan and all evil spirits

who wander through the world

for the ruin of souls. Amen.
