Faculty Workload Complete Table 6-2, Faculty Workload Summary and describe this information in terms of workload expectations or requirements (for the year of
the Self Study).
The faculty members teaching load is typically two courses per semester. In addition to teaching load, a faculty member is expected to
have a committee assignment load. The work load for faculty members holding administrative position varies with their position. For
example, the Chairman of the Department teaches one course per semester and chairs three committees namely the Promotion,
Appointment, and Scholarships. The Dean neither teaches nor servers in any department committee.Table 6-2 shows summaryof the

1. FT = Full Time Faculty or PT = Part Time Faculty, at the institution
2. For the academic year for which the Self-Study Report is being prepared.
3. Program activity distribution should be in percent of effort in the program and should total 100%.
4. Indicate sabbatical leave, etc., under "Other."
5. Out of the total time employed at the institution.
B. Faculty Size
Discuss how the faculty serving in the program are of sufficient number to maintain continuity, stability, oversight, student interaction, and
advising for the program.
The Department of Information Science has twenty three full-time faculty members. All required courses and at least one optional
course are offered each regular semester. Full-time faculty members have the responsibility for the consistency and quality of major
courses. All courses are taught by full-time faculty members.
The Department of Information Science has nine teaching assistants who help the faculty member for homework, assignments, lab
sessions, tutorial sessions and similar activities. Each Teaching Assistant in ISC department has BS and MS degrees in the field of
computing.
Summer teaching is optional for the Information Science Faculty. Those who opt for teaching in the summer are entitled to teach one
course or two curses. There is additional compensation for teaching summer courses.
The following guidelines are applied by the course schedule committee to assign courses to instructors for regular (Fall and Spring)
semesters.
1. The instructor who taught a course for one time (after discontinuation of at least two semesters) and willing to teach it for the
second time has the highest priority to teach the course.
2. The instructor who taught a course for two successive times has the lowest priority to teach the course.
3. A course included in a teaching priority list of an instructor is assigned to the instructor if no other instructors are requesting
that course in their teaching priority lists.
All multi-section courses in the Department of Information Science have a course coordinator. The coordinator oversees the
development and maintenance of learning objectives, learning outcomes, and course syllabi. The coordinator works with all assigned
instructors in the development of assignments, exams and grading criteria.
Course coordinators for academic years of 2015/2016 and 2016/2017are listed in the table 6.3:

The role of faculty members in the advising system is thoroughly explained in Section 2 (Criterion 1: Students).
C. Professional Development
Provide detailed descriptions of professional development activities for each faculty member.
Faculty members are encouraged to participate in short term training courses organized by Kuwait University for faculty members to
improve their instructional and educational capabilities. Moreover, professional development is supported by regular departmental
seminars, given by faculty members, and distinguished professionals from world leading research and educational institutions and by
organizing professional conferences with generous financial support from Kuwait University, Kuwait Foundation for Advancement of
Science (KF AS) and other external sponsoring institutions.
Sabbatical and Academic Leave:
The Department of Administrative Development and Teaching, Kuwait University organizes regularly short training courses on
“Administrative Excellence” for the administrative staff. In the same way, the department organizes short course on “Academic
Teaching Excellence” for faculty members to improve their instructional and educational capabilities. Our faculty members participate
in attending these courses to improve their skills. Professional development is supported by regular departmental seminars, given by
faculty members as well as distinguished professionals from world leading research and educational institutions. Moreover, organizing
professional conferences with generous financial support from Kuwait University, Kuwait Foundation for Advancement of Science
(KFAS) and other external sponsoring institutions enhance professional development for faculty members. All seminars administered
by the department can be found on the department website.
One of the significant components of professional development in Kuwait University is academic and sabbatical leave. Academic
Leave is for young national faculty members. Sabbatical Leave is for both national and international faculty members who are either
Associate Professor or full Professor. A faculty member is eligible to avail this leave again after 6 years. Faculty members are given
sabbatical leave with full salary. During the period of the sabbatical leave, the faculty members are allowed to stay either in the host
university or Kuwait University. Kuwait University encourages its faculty to take academic leaves to be spent outside Kuwait in order
to foster research and to help the faculty in their promotion. For example, during the academic year 2014/2015 one faculty members
from the department was on Academic leave, in the academic year 2015/2016 one faculty went on Sabbatical, and another went on
Academic leave, and in 2016/2017 two faculty members are in Academic leave.
National faculty member who held an administrative role (chairman, vice dean, and dean) is eligible to administrative leave. Here is
the list of Sabbatical leaves during last 5 years.

ISC Curriculum” 16
th May 2011
D. Authority and Responsibility of Faculty
Describe the role played by the faculty with respect to course creation, modification, and evaluation, their role in the definition and revision of program educational objectives and student outcomes, and their role in the attainment of the student outcomes. Describe the roles of others on campus, e.g., dean or provost, with respect to these areas.
In our curriculum, the key items are course catalog, Course Description Form, Course Contract and Instruction Course Evaluation
Form. The relationship among the course catalog, Course Description Form, Course Contract and Instruction Course Evaluation
Form is illustrated in Figure 6.1.

The structure of ISC courses is illustrated in the above figure. The course catalog (it is also called course description) explains the
course in a few lines. It is prepared and updated by department Curriculum Committee. This Course Catalog is expanded into
Course Description Form (CDF) which includes the following details:
The course description
Text Book
Major topics of the course
Course Learning Outcomes
The mapping of course learning outcomes into student outcomes.
For each course, an Instructor Course Evaluation Form (ICEF) is created. The ICEF captures two important items:
1. Course data relevant to student outcomes which are specified in the CDF.
2. Suggestions of the instructor to improve the course catalog, text book, lab, etc.
For each course, a separate ICEF template is prepared. For example of course ISC100, there are two separate forms CDF ISC100
and ICEF ISC100. These two forms (CDF and IECF) are available in the ISC website under the course catalog of each course.
Using CDF, an instructor prepares a Course Contract (Syllabus and Outlines) for the course which he teaches. The Course
Contract (Syllabus and Outlines) of a course varies semester to semester and instructor to instructor. It contains the grading
policy, course schedule etc which are not specified in CDF. In short, a Course Contract (Syllabus and Outlines) is superset of its
CDF. A sample is available in the display room.
The revision of ISC curriculum and its courses is ongoing process. During the academic year 2014-15, CDF and ICEF of all the
courses were revised. During the academic year, the CDF and ICEF of ISC101, ISC331, ISC380, ISC480, CLS130, ISC499,
ISC495, ISC363, and ETM450 courses were revised. One of the significant job was to update the course learning outcomes and
the mapping the course learning outcomes to student outcomes. Each instructor was assigned two courses by the chairman based
on the expertise of the instructor and the recommendation of the course scheduling committee. The instructor has to prepare
Course Contract (Syllabus and Outlines) for each of the assigned courses. These course contracts are audited by the Assessment
and Continuous Improvement Committee to ensure their completeness and consistency with the CDF. This task is performed
during the semester that precedes the semester in which the course is offered. The instructor has to fill the corresponding ICEF at
the end of the semester for each taught course.
There are two important academic related processes: 1. Textbook Change Process 2.Curriculum Revision Process.
The “Textbook Change Process” is described in Figure 6.2 which is also available in the ISC department website
athttp://www.isc.ku.edu.kw/documents/ABET/Resources/Textbook_Change_Process_v5.pdf.
