Dear Colleagues and Friends,
'The modern world is not impenetrable, is not unknowable & if the right questions are asked, it is even more intriguing than we think. All it takes is a new way of looking...' Stephen Dubner
Structured scientific conferences help us look at many issues in our day to day practice with a new perspective. They help us with answers & solutions to many of our clinical questions & dilemmas as we are presented with concise knowledge, understanding & experience by the expert faculty.
We are pleased to invite you to the premium academic event of the MOGS year, our th40 Annual Conference of Mumbai Obstetric & Gynecological Society on
January 7 and 8, 2011 at the JW Marriott Hotel.
The cross cutting theme this year is Evidence Based Protocols & Guidelines. The official themes cover obstetric emergencies, oncology & modern infertility management, supplemented with sessions on operative obstetrics & gynecology, nutrition & supplementation & family welfare.
Our two conference orations will be delivered by our own – Dr. Vandana Walvekar, Past President, MOGS & a pioneer in imaging & fetal medicine & Dr. Amarnath Bhide, Past Managing Council Member, MOGS & an internationally renowned Consultant in Maternal - Fetal Medicine at St. George's Hospital, London, UK. Besides these we have included keynote addresses on both days of the conference to be delivered by eight exceptional speaker – clinicians.
This year we have already had academic meetings focused on the uterus, contraception & safe abortion, the extremes of age, labor & delivery & our very special golden & multispecialty symposia. We complemented these with partnered conferences on recent advances, gynecological oncology & advanced infertility management. Having almost covered the entire spectrum of our specialty with these
thmeetings, the 40 Annual Conference has been structured to be a highly selective overview spread over nine satellite sessions. Having also bridged the entire color spectrum with our brochures, the white we have selected for the Annual Conference signifies a natural amalgam.
The MOGS Dr. CL Jhaveri Precongress Workshops on Adult & Neonatal Resuscitation in partnership with the Perinatology Committee of FOGSI, IAP & NNF will precede the conference on January 6, 2012 at the Hiranandani, Nanavati & Saifee Hospitals.
This year we will celebrate the musical, dancing & artistic talents of our members with the MOGS Talent Showcase. We invite your participation in this at the MOGS Conference Banquet on January 7, 2012 for an evening of great atmosphere & sumptuous cuisine, music & dancing, fun & entertainment.
The conference venue, the JW Marriott is rated one of the finest luxury hotels in Mumbai. We welcome you to spend the weekend with us at this luxurious venue during the conference, the talent show & the banquet.
We dedicate this conference to Dr. R.D. Pandit, Dr. D.K. Tank & Dr. Mehroo D. Hansotia – three of our great MOGS Past Presidents, role models with their distinctive strong personalities, united in their love for MOGS & FOGSI.

Recommendations for a Successful Scientific ConferenceA Mumbai Obstetric & Gynecological Society Academic Initiative
Suggestions for Speakers
On receiving the invitation
Ÿ Check & ensure your availability on the particular day and time.
Ÿ Speak to a member of the organizing or scientific committee about their expectation of your talk if in doubt about its scope.
Ÿ If you are uncomfortable about speaking on the given topic, this is the time to request a possible change.
Preparing the presentation
Ÿ Know your audience. Understand & deliver what they are interested in. Since you will be speaking to a group of clinicians keep your talk clinically oriented.
Ÿ Every presentation should have a point. The take home message should have two or three important points which should be emphasized.
Ÿ Be logical. A presentation should have a beginning, middle & an end- much like a good story. Don't try to present too much. A clear & concise presentation is always appreciated.
Making the PowerPoint
Ÿ Most speakers will speak comfortably at the rate of one slide per minute. Discuss one thought or idea with one slide. Try not to have more than ten lines in a slide and not more than eight words in a line. Use a clear font like Arial & with reasonable size of 24 to 28 points.
Ÿ Slides are a cue. Speak on what is being projected. Avoid reading from them directly. The audience can do that by themselves.
Ÿ Ensure that you are within the specified time & that you know yourmaterial well.
Delivering the presentation
Ÿ Arrive on time & submit the presentation in advance to the preview room. Check that it runs. This is especially important for presentations containing video material.
Ÿ Treat the podium as your stage. Talk to the audience. Presentationsshould be entertaining in addition to being informative. Be natural.
Ÿ Stick to your allotted topic & to what you have prepared & practiced.Avoid straying into areas allotted to the other speakers in the session.
Ÿ Use the displayed timer intelligently to pace your talk. Do not overshoot the time. Be gracious to quickly wrap up when signaled to do so by thechairperson.
Shivani Bordvekar
Suggestions
On applying to present a poster
Ÿ Keep the poster oriented towards a clinical question of some significance. Posters shouldusually have a one point agenda. Know your audience. Understand & deliver what they would be interested in.
Ÿ Prepare a poster summary as you would for a scientific paper in a standard abstract format. This of course is not how the poster will appear, but is submitted to help selection and be a part of the conference proceedings.
Preparing the content
Ÿ Attendees & judges at the conference will usually view posters for only a minute.
Ÿ The poster has to address an important clinical issue (content) & be attractive (presentation) to get noticed. It is the equivalent of a good billboard advertisement.
Ÿ On a poster, space is at a premium. Do not waste it on copious background material. Come to the point directly. Though basic sciences are important, present only what is only of relevant interest.
Ÿ List a few important references to validate scientific content.
Ÿ Produce good visuals. This can be high quality photographs, graphs or charts. One or two of these are enough to catch the eye. Do not overcrowd the poster with too many pictorials.
Ÿ Less is more. Do not try to present too much. A poster has to be clear and concise to beread.
Making the poster
Ÿ Check the exact poster size announced by the organizers - 3 ft width x 4 ft height for the MOGSconference. This will ensure the poster fits the slot allotted for it.
Ÿ The layout & format are critical. Be logical. A poster should be organized such that there is a flow of the content & it is easy to browse through. Guide the viewer's eye with numbering or arrows.
Ÿ Do not use small fonts that are difficult to read. The main points should be highlighted & at eye level to make it easy to read.
Ÿ Visual appeal is important. While it is acceptable to have hand drawn posters if you are anexceptional artist, a computer generated poster usually appears neater. The poster printed on a flex banner sheet gives the best result. Alternatively, color printed & laminated A4 sheets can also do the job.
Poster related interactions
Ÿ Spend a fair amount of time near your poster. Ensure your presence at the time the poster is going to be viewed by the judges.
Ÿ Greet judges & viewers & make eye contact. Allow them to browse through the poster. Beengaging & strike a conversation about your work. It is worth having a few interesting openingremarks prepared.
Ÿ Be attentive to the comments & try to answer queries as best as you can. If the details aredifficult to provide, it is worth getting back to the visitor at a later point in time. This usuallyleaves a lasting impression.

Suggestions for Chairpersons
On receiving an invitation
Ÿ Check & ensure your availability on the particular day & time.
Ÿ Have a word with a member of the organizing or scientific committee about the session to ensure that your understanding of it's scope is on the same wavelength.
Preparing for the session
Ÿ Be prepared to give a very brief introduction to evoke interest in the audience.
Ÿ Communicate with the speakers in your session before the session begins to avoid redundancy amongst the speakers & to clarify the schedule.
Conducting the session
Ÿ The main role of a chairperson is to ensure that the session runs smoothly. A major contribution to this is to ensure punctuality.
Ÿ Introduce the speaker in one or two concise sentences.
Ÿ Note the actual start times of the speakers & constantly monitor the on screen timer. This gives you more authority to stop them when the time is up.
Ÿ Signal to speakers when the time available is complete. If speakers insist on continuing over time, politely but firmly direct them to stop.
Wrapping up the session
Ÿ You may want to give a very brief one or two sentence summary of the speaker's material before moving on to questions.
Ÿ Be prepared with a couple of questions. It may take the audience a few minutes to digest the material.
Ÿ Let the audience ask questions on your instructions. Identify on a serial basis & go in order. Limit the number of questions to the time available.
Ÿ If the speaker & the questioner get into a long winded technical discussion, it is quite fair to ask them to continue with it later.
Ÿ Don't hesitate to move on if there are no questions forthcoming from the audience.
