Students express gratitude for scholarships
Michael BlahutCLASS OF 2018
“Being a recipient of the SGA scholarship is an honor to be recognized by my fellow classmates, and has inspired me to further dedicate my energy to help improve the WVSOM student community. The scholarship has helped me financially and I am grateful for the ability to be supported in my education at WVSOM.”
Julia VuCLASS OF 2017
“I am grateful to have been a recipient of the SGA scholarship and feel honored to be recognized for my contribution to the WVSOM student body. The award money has provided some financial relief for me this year because I am living on my own and have recently been able to own a car. I truly appreciate the award money and would like to again say thank you.”
Every year, the Grand Affair raises funds for medical student scholarships with the support from community members and area businesses. The event, which is hosted by the WVSOM Student Government Association, is one of the most successful fundraising opportunities at the school.
During the last academic school year, a new scholarship was presented to six students who have mentored fellow students, shared their own resources to facilitate the learning of others, founded clubs or organized events and brought students together in new and creative ways.
THESE FEATURED STUDENTS WERE SOME OF THE RECIPIENTS OF THE INAUGURAL STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP AWARD:
STUDENT D.O. OF THE YEARThe West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine is committed to recognizing medical students for their academic and community achievements through scholarships raised throughout the year.
One of the students recognized during this year’s annual Spring Awards ceremony was Miles Medina, Class of 2017. Medina won the Student D.O. of the Year award, which acknowledges a student’s commitment to his or her school, community and the osteopathic profession.

Students express gratitude for scholarships
Miles MedinaCLASS OF 2017
“There are numerous ups and downs in our education — sleepless nights, studying for hours, ensuring this is the right path for us, etc. We are always seeking inspirations to fuel our compassion to become the future physicians we desire to be,” he said. “It is scholarships like this that reaffirm and solidify my commitment to osteopathic medicine while simultaneously encouraging students to become leaders both inside and outside of the classroom.”
Ahmed HassabelnabyCLASS OF 2018
“I am honored and grateful to have been awarded this scholarship among my colleagues who are all well qualified and deserving. As this scholarship is based on helping the community, it reminds me daily in the midst of our rigorous academic life that helping others and making a difference, however small, is what we signed up for as a career.”
OTHER RECIPIENTS INCLUDE:Erin Goode ~ Class of 2016 Bradley Marple ~ Class of 2017
Farrah FongCLASS OF 2016
“Being recognized as one of the recipients for this year’s SGA award was an honor, and as an out-of-state medical student, every bit helps to contribute to my livelihood. (The amount in question can feed me for almost the next two years!) I’ve loved every chance I’ve had to work with my fellow students — club events or otherwise — from food fundraisers for local organizations and international relief efforts, to tutoring in anatomy or teaching dance classes. I plan to incorporate my love for volunteering and community outreach into my future practice.”
Medina said that being a scholarship recipient is a humbling experience and one that he is grateful for beyond words.
