Gloria in Excelsis Deo

It is a pleasure to welcome you to Christmas at Luther, indeed a time that Luther College gives Glory to God in the Highest!

Since our founding in 1861, music making has played a fundamental role in a Luther education. Music is central to our rigorous liberal arts curriculum, and it is transformative in the lives of our students and in the lives of listeners. My hope for these students is that they realize what a tremendous gift it is to be able to create beauty and help connect the Luther College community to its treasured faith heritage.

Gloria in Excelsis Deo were the words the angels sang when the birth of Christ was announced to shepherds. How fortunate that over 600 students announce that same message of joy to us today. May their music stir and inspire you anew with the glorious news of Jesus’s birth.

Richard L. Torgerson, Ph.D. President

To the humble shepherds who have waited long?

Gloria in excelsis Deo!Hear the angels sing their joyful song.

He is come in peace in the winter’s stillness,

Like a gentle snowfall in the gentle night;

He is come in joy like the sun at morning

Filling all the world with radiance and with light.

He is come in love as a child of Mary;In a simple stable we have seen his

birth:

Gloria in excelsis Deo!Hear the angels singing “Peace on

earth.”

He will bring new light to a world of darkness,

Like a bright star shining in the skies above;

He will bring new hope to the waiting nations

When he comes to reign in purity and love.

Let the earth rejoice at the Saviour’s coming;

Let the heavens answer with the joyful morn:

Gloria in excelsis Deo!Hear the angels singing “Christ is

born.”

Infant Holy, Infant Lowly Polish carol, arr. Paul J. Christiansen

(1914–1997)Text trans. Edith M.G. ReedCathedral Choir

Infant holy, infant lowly, for his bed a cattle stall;

Oxen lowing, little knowing Christ the child is Lord of all.

Swiftly winging, angels singing, bells are ringing, tidings bringing:

Christ the child is Lord of all!

Flocks were sleeping, shepherds keeping vigil ’til the morning new

Saw the glory, heard the story, tidings of a gospel true.

Thus rejoicing, free from sorrow, praises voicing, greet the morrow:

“Christ the child is born for you!”

Go Tell It on the Mountainarr. Gregory PetersonText: John W. Work Jr. (1871–1925);

spiritual Audience is invited to stand and sing.

Refrain:Go tell it on the mountain, over the

hills and everywhere;go tell it on the mountain that Jesus

Christ is born!

While shepherds kept their watching o’er silent flocks by night,

behold, throughout the heavens there shone a holy light.  (Refrain)

The shepherds feared and trembled when lo, above the earth

rang out the angel chorus that hailed our Savior’s birth.  (Refrain)

Down in a lonely manger the humble Christ was born;

and God sent us salvation that blessed Christmas morn.  (Refrain)

Ring Out, Wild Bells! Bradley EllingboeText: Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809–

1892)Aurora, Luther Ringers

Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,The flying cloud, the frosty light;The year is dying in the night;Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

Ring out the old, ring in the new,Ring, happy bells, across the snow:The year is going, let him go;Ring out the false, ring in the true.

Ring out the grief that saps the mind,For those that here we see no more,Ring out the feud of rich and poor,Ring in redress to all mankind.

Ring out a slowly dying cause,And ancient forms of party strife;Ring in the nobler modes of life,With sweeter manners, purer laws.

Ring out the want, the care, the sin,The faithless coldness of the times;Ring out, ring out thy mournful

rhymes,But ring the fuller minstrel in.

Ring out false pride in place and blood,The civic slander and the spite;Ring in the love of truth and right,Ring in the common love of good.

Ring out old shapes of foul disease,Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;Ring out the thousand wars of old,Ring in the thousand years of peace.

Ring in the valiant man and free,The larger heart, the kindlier hand;Ring out the darkness of the land,Ring in the Christ that is to be.

What Shall We Give?Catalonian carol, arr. Mack WilbergText trans. David WarnerCollegiate Chorale

What shall we give to the Babe in the manger?

What shall we offer the child in the stall?

Incense and spices and gold we’ve a plenty,

are these the gifts for the King of us all?

Tam, patanTam, patan

What shall we give to the boy in the temple?

What shall we offer the man by sea?Palms at his feet and hosannas uprising,are these for him who will carry the

tree?

What shall we give to the lamb who was offered,

rising the third day and shedding his love?

Tears for his mercy we’ll weep at the manger;

bathing the infant come down from above.

What sweeter music can we bringThan a carol, for to singThe birth of this our heavenly King?Awake the voice! Awake the string!

Dark and dull night fly hence away,And give the honor to this dayThat sees December turned to May.

Why does the chilling winter’s mornSmile, like a field beset with corn?Or smell like a meadow newly shornThus on the sudden? Come and seeThe cause, why things thus fragrant

be:

Tis he is born, whose quickening birth

Gives life and lustre, public mirth,To heaven and the underearth.

We see him come, and know him ours,

Who, with his sunshine and his showers,

Turns all the patient ground to flowers.

The darling of the world is come,And fit it is, we find a roomTo welcome him, to welcome him.The nobler part of all the house here,

is the heart,

Which we will give him; and bequeath

This holly, and this ivy wreath,To do him honor; who’s our King,And Lord of all this revelling.

What sweeter music can we bringThan a carol, for to singThe birth of this our heavenly King.

The First Nowell English carol, arr. Mack WilbergCombined choirs, Symphony Orchestra(candlelighting)

The first nowell the angel did sayWas to certain poor shepherds in

fields as they lay,In fields where they lay keeping their

sheepOn a cold winter’s night that was so

deep.Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell!Born is the King of Israel.

They looked up and saw a starShining in the east beyond them far,And to the earth it gave greatAnd so it continued both day and

night.Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell!Born is the King of Israel.

Then let us all with one accordSing praises to our heav’nly Lord,That hath made heav’n and earth of

noughtAnd with his blood mankind hath

bought.Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell!Born is the King of Israel.

Music at Luther (http://music.luther.edu)The Luther campus is alive with the sounds of six choirs, three bands, three orchestras, and two jazz bands. Nearly 1,000 student musicians participate in our large ensembles, faculty-coached chamber groups, private lessons, and master classes. More than 350 students pursue the rigorous Luther music major, studying music theory, ear training, history, music education, composition, church music, and performance. It all adds up to one of the largest collegiate music programs in the world!

Martin Luther—our namesake—believed music to be “one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us.” For over 130 years Luther students have been sharing this marvelous gift with audiences across the country and around the globe.

Music at Luther

Luther College (www.luther.edu)Founded in 1861 by Norwegian immigrants, Luther College provides its 2,500 students with a classic liberal arts education.

Luther offers more than 60 majors and pre-professional and certificate programs leading to the bachelor of arts degree. The college’s strong academic program includes internships, professional semesters, and extensive study-abroad opportunities. Dedicated and talented faculty help Luther students develop solid research, writing, and critical-thinking skills, while the close-knit community imbues its members with an environmental and service ethos.

The Phi Beta Kappa college is bolstered by its Lutheran foundation, celebrated for its vibrant music and arts tradition, and enriched by its strong athletic program.
