INTRODUCTION Printed street directories were common in the nineteenth and early twentieth

centuries. This resource is based on the Belfast and Province of Ulster Directory

for 1914. It contains information on each of the towns and larger villages in the

Newry and Mourne area. For each there is a brief description, followed by lists

of the local gentry, professional people (including clergy, doctors and solicitors),

traders, merchants and principal householders. The resource is illustrated with

images of some of the businesses and individuals mentioned in the directory. All

the images (unless otherwise stated) come from the Newry and Mourne

Museum Collection.

At the back of the resource there is a glossary, which gives definitions for some

of the more unusual occupations found in the directory. There is also a short list

of suggested educational tasks for teachers to use with the resource in the

classroom.

BESSBROOK

With a population of 2,888, Bessbrook is situated in a beautiful and well-watered valley. It is close to the Camlough Mountains, and about 2 ⅟₂ miles from Newry, but about three miles by electric tramway. The scenery, with the effect of the hill, vale, and wood, is very attractive. The town has certain peculiarities as it is without public-house or pawnshop, and it is remarkable for its yarn and linen manufactures. Each step in the process of manufacturing linen is seen here, from the growth of flax to the processing of the final product, everything made of linen is obtainable. The Bessbrook Spinning Co. employ over 3,000 people in the production of these various articles, and their huckabacks, towelling, fronting linens, drills, diapers, and damasks are known the wide world over. The damasks made at Bessbrook by machinery are equal in fineness to those made by handlooms.

HILLTOWN

Hilltown is a village with a population of 220, in the Parish of Clonduff, Barony of Upper Iveagh, County Down, on the road from Newry to Newcastle, eight miles from the former and ten from the latter. The nearest railway station is Ballyroney, six miles distant, on the Great Northern Railway. It is situated on the north-west verge of the Mourne Mountains, near the River Bann, where there is excellent trout fishing. There is a remarkably good hotel. The bracing air, the pretty mountain scenery, and beautiful drives, which may be enjoyed by visitors through the surrounding district are attracting an increasing number of visitors each year. The name Hilltown is taken from the surname of the Marquis of Downshire, who owns the property, and by whose ancestors the village was built. A monthly fair is held on the second Tuesday of every month. The Marquis of Downshire in 1897 presented to the inhabitants a weighbridge, beam and scales, and a market shed. The ancient Parish Church, which was ruined in 1641, was situated about a mile from and a half east of the village and some of the walls still remain in an old graveyard, and are of interest to antiquarians. The present Parish Church was built by the Marquis of Downshire in 1765. It is a neat building with a pinnacled tower, and is a striking object. The Clonduff Co-operative Society have purchased the large buildings and offices lately occupied by Mr. H. H. Martin, Bannvale, and the Society have had it renovated. There is a beautiful Parochial Hall, built by Rev. Mr. Kearns, close to the village, and a reading-room is about to be opened for the young men of the parish. Post Office and Postal Telephone Station P. Bradley, D.C., postmaster. Arrival of mails daily at 6.30 a.m. and 11.45 a.m.; Sundays at 6.30 a.m. only. KILKEEL

The flourishing town of Kilkeel is situated near the southern extremity of the County of Down, in the Barony of Mourne, and is half a mile from the open coast. The town is composed of five streets, and contains 1,620 inhabitants. The houses are well built, and several handsome residences have lately been erected. The religious edifices are—The Church of Ireland, two Presbyterian Churches, a Moravian Church and a Roman Catholic Chapel. Petty Sessions are held on the last Tuesday of each month. A number of vessels discharge coal at the pier. Kilkeel boasts of a large number of fishing luggers, and the hardy fishermen pursue their calling with perseverance. About twelve minutes’ walk from Kilkeel there is a splendid sea strand. The scenery of the district is remarkably fine, and tourists’ trips through it by coach are becoming increasingly popular.

NEWRY Newry is an extensive market town and Parliamentary borough in Down and Armagh Counties, fifty miles north of Dublin and thirty from Belfast. It comprises, within the Parliamentary boundary, 2,543 acres, of which 629 are in the town, and 1,914 in the rural districts. It is situated near the mouth of the Clanrye River, which discharges itself into the Carlingford Bay, five miles from the town. There are eight bridges, four of which are stone, and cross the river separating the Counties of Armagh and Down; the others are iron and wooden drawbridges across the canal. Newry is a very ancient town. In 1175, Maurice McLoughran, King of Ireland, founded an abbey here, to which great immunities and endowments were granted, and afterwards confirmed by Hugh de Lacy, Earl of Ulster, in 1237. In 1689 the Duke of Berwick, to secure his retreat to Dundalk from the English forces, under the command of the Duke of Schomberg, set fire to Newry, and left it in a very destitute and ruined condition. The northern entrance of the town is adorned with an elegant obelisk of chiselled granite, erected in honour of the late Mr. Trevor Corry, who for many years was a magistrate in the town. Immediately opposite is the Orange Hall, erected on a site granted by the Marquis of Downshire. There is also a Masonic Hall. Corry Square, with the Corry Monment

The principal buildings are—two Churches in connection with the Church of Ireland, St. Patrick’s and St. Mary’s; two Churches in connection with the General Assembly, one Remonstrant Church, one Methodist Church, one Unitarian Church, one Independent Chapel, the Roman Catholic pro-Cathedral, old Chapel, Dominican Church, two Convents, the Courthouse, Town Hall, Custom House, Union Workhouse, Roman Catholic Seminary (Violet Hill), Municipal Technical School, Intermediate School, National Model Schools, six other National Schools, three schools presided over by the Christian brothers, Fever Hospital, several banks, Assembly Room and Military Barracks.

Newry Town Hall and Municipal Technical School There are several corn and flour mills, two weaving factories and spinning mills, tan-yards, a foundry, and a spade and shovel manufactory. A fair is held on the first Monday of each month, and the market days are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The port admits vessels of 2,000 tons burthern to Warrenpoint, five miles from the town, where the larger vessels remain, but those drawing fifteen feet of water can go up by ship canal to the Albert Basin, Newry. Barges ply on the Newry canal to Lough Neagh, thirty-two miles distant inland. The Newry Port and Harbour Trust have control of the port and canal, the latter of which extends along the west side of the river, and that company has recently deepened the channel so as to admit of large ships discharging at the Victoria Locks. The Dundalk and Newry Steam Packet Company has done much to develop the trade of the town. The principal exports are linen, cloth, grain, provisions, cattle, eggs, and butter. In the neighbourhood of the town there are valuable quarries. A spacious Town Hall, capable of accommodating about 1,200 people, has been erected on the bridge spanning the tidal river at a cost of some £11,500. There is also an Intermediate School in Downshire Road, erected on a site leased at a nominal rent by the Marquis of Downshire. The Newry Technical School was formally opened by Mr. P. G. Hamilton Carvill, B.L., M.P., in 1903, the Right Honourable Sir Horace Plunkett also being present, and is located in the building known as the “Old Town Hall”. It is at the present one of the best Institutions of its kind in the North of Ireland outside of Belfast. The population at the census of 1911 was 11,963.

NEWTOWNHAMILTON

Newtownhamilton is in the Barony of Upper Fews, nine miles south by east from Armagh, eight miles west of Newry, and thirteen miles from Dundalk. It is pleasantly situated, and impresses a stranger favourably on entering from Armagh or Castleblayney. There are five good streets and a large square. The houses are well built and kept in good order. There is a market, held every Saturday, for the sale of butter, eggs, fowl, corn and grass-seed, and a splendid fair is held on the last Saturday of each month, which is well attended by buyers from all the surrounding towns. Hiring fairs are held on the last Saturdays of May and November, and the first Saturdays of June and December. Farmers make a great feature of dairying, as the land about the town is good grass land; it is also suitable for raising potatoes, oats and flax, the latter bringing very high prices in the Newry and Armagh markets. The local mills are attended by buyers from Bessbrook, Armagh and Belfast. The Fane Valley and White Cross Creameries are within three miles of the town and do a large business. The Church of Ireland, Presbyterian and Roman Catholic Churches have each a place of worship, and there are three schools and a dispensary. Petty sessions are held on the second Monday of every month. Population 625. Places of Worship Church of Ireland—Rev. S. H. Baker, B.A. Presbyterian Church—Vacant Roman Catholic Chapel—Rev. P. ROSTREVOR

Rostrevor is a beautiful watering-place in County Down, nearly two miles east of Warrenpoint, and similarly situated as Warrenpoint. Rostrevor is completely sheltered from the east winds by mountains, and thus an advantageous place, in point of climate, for invalids, and particularly recommended for persons afflicted with pulmonary disorders. The village is delightfully seated on a gentle declivity, which rises from a little cove of Carlingford Lough, and commands beautiful views of the woods, mountains, and waters of the lough’s basin. The Great Northern Hotel is beautifully situated on the main road between Warrenpoint, Rostrevor, and Newcastle, and commands unrivalled views of mountain scenery, which are unsurpassed for grandeur by any in Ireland. The hotel is surrounded by its own ornamental grounds, flower gardens, lawns, and commands views of Carlingford Lough and mountains on the one side, with the charming Slieve Ban Mountain and wood on the other.

In the south of the town stands a handsome stone monument, erected to the memory of the late General Ross, who fell while leading his troops to victory at Bladensburg, in America. The Church of Ireland forms a conspicuous object to the quiet aspect of the place. There are also a Presbyterian Church, a Roman Catholic Chapel, and a Methodist Church, the latter erected in memory of Rev. John Gilchrist. Fairs—Third Tuesday in each month. Population in 1911, 746.

WARRENPOINT

One of the most popular watering-places in Ulster, it is situated at the head of the beautiful bay of Carlingford, and is about five miles from Newry. A century ago Warrenpoint (so called from the circumstances of a rabbit-warren having formerly existed at the place) could only boast of a few houses; its population now is 2,000 and in summer reaches 5,000. The entire place has an air of comfort and prosperity that at once favourably impresses health-seekers. The situation of Warrenpoint, built as it is on the verge on the mountain-girth bay, is excellent; and the view from the pleasant promenade is one of inspiring grandeur. Dr. Knox, referring to the town in “Irish Watering Places” says—“It is scarcely possible anywhere to point out a more beautiful district than that lying between Rostrevor and the large seaport of Newry.” The roads in the neighbourhood of Warrenpoint are particularly inviting, and in about twenty minutes an ordinary pedestrian can reach Narrow-water Castle, the residence of Captain Roger Hall, J. P., one of the most beautiful seats in the country. The house is an imposing structure, the gardens are models, and the drive through the thickly-wooded demesne is a thing to be remembered.

Narrow Water Castle The Urban Council have now erected magnificent sea baths, with promenade deck, at a cost of £5,500. During 1909 the Urban Council expended £1,000 on a new and elaborate system of slipper baths, making them the most up-to-date in the kingdom.

A park or recreation ground was opened in July, 1907, situated in the centre of the town, running down to the promenade. Golf links (9 holes) are in operation quite close to the town. In 1912 a new water scheme was completed for the town at a cost of £11,000, and a splendid supply is now available from the Mourne Mountains. Post Office Dock Square—Miss Kate Mullen, postmistress.
