ALL DEGREES WELCOMEAt the Rowe School of Business, all degrees are welcome. Our tradition is being a destination for non-traditional students from every discipline. We are looking for high potential career launchers who are self-motivated achievers, socially conscious, and confident in their ability to succeed.

Along with academic success in their undergraduate degree, Corporate Residency MBA students share a sense of how to transfer skills and experience acquired in Science, Arts, Engineering, Business and other degrees into a managerial context, along with a willingness to take on a steep learning curve and strive to be the best they can be.

CLASS PROFILE BY UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE

In many cases the diversity in our classes comes from students “pivoting” out of different career paths such as medicine, law, dentistry, pharmacy or engineering. Whereas other students are “blenders” who have a passion for what they studied in their undergraduate program but want to combine the skills they already have with a new set of business and leadership skills. For those interested in law, we offer the option of a joint JD/MBA program, which can be completed in four years.

OUR PROGRAM IS IN THE TOP 2% OF MBA PROGRAMS WORLDWIDE!

By the time you enter your Corporate Residency, you will have been coached and rigorously prepared for this deep immersion into the business world. Over eight months you will accomplish and learn more than is possible in any traditional four-month co-op because a Dalhousie Corporate Residency isn’t just another summer job, it’s a glimpse into your career. OUR LEARNING APPROACHThe Corporate Residency MBA is unique in its structure, design and approach to learning. Our 22-month program is more than the completion of a set number of stand-alone courses. We ensure students receive a business education that balances theoretical knowledge with in-class experiential learning and application of business skills in an eight-month work term.

Year one of the Corporate Residency MBA program begins with pre-course work and an orientation in late June. The balance of the summer is spent completing five core courses. These provide students with a new appreciation for the world of business and give them the fundamental competencies essential for success in today’s business world. As well, students benefit from personal and professional effectiveness sessions designed to help prepare them for securing their corporate residencies.

In the fall of year one are six more core courses plus a competitive, immersive, team-based integrative weekend session that challenges students to fully integrate all learning to date. Specifically, students build on their skills surrounding sales, negotiation and teamwork. Faculty members and Employer Partners work together on these sessions to ensure the highest level of learning and job preparation.

Year one continues in January with paid corporate residencies—extended work terms with leading employers—refining the concepts and skills acquired in the classroom and putting them into practice in a corporate setting. The academic learning continues during this period with an online course designed to help you navigate your corporate residency experience. Year one ends with an intensive debriefing of the corporate residencies to harvest the important learnings and celebrate student successes.

In the fall and winter terms of year two, students complete the five remaining core courses which provide an opportunity to build consulting, problem solving, project management and stakeholder management skills. Additionally, seven electives are required to complete the final year. Through elective choices students can deep dive into four areas of focus including: Finance, Marketing, Enterprise Analytics and Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Elective courses also can include directed studies that will be developed with a faculty member. The official completion of the MBA occurs at the May convocation.

BUILD SOMETHINGMASSIVE

Dalhousie has partnered with top business schools to create a global seed stage program for developing massively scalable, science-based companies, which employs an objectives-based mentoring process with the goal of maximizing equity-value creation. CRMBA students have the opportunity to benefit from the innovation and entrepreneurship eco-system created by CDL-Atlantic to gain a unique understanding of how to evaluate, finance, and manage technology businesses. There are three primary ways for MBA students to get involved with CDL-Atlantic:

CDL SESSION VOLUNTEER:

CDL COURSE ELECTIVE 1 & 2:

CDL-ATLANTIC CORPORATE RESIDENCY:

1

2

3

For CDL sessions, CRMBA students have an opportunity to sit in on mentor/venture meetings which provides insight to startup companies and how mentors and investors provide advice on how to build and scale their companies.

By enrolling in the CDL electives you will gain access to emerging companies and cutting-edge technology in artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain, ocean tech, and more. You will increase your awareness of issues and advancement at the intersections of law, technology, and business, while also achieving a holistic understanding of entrepreneurial financing, intellectual property and patent processing. Students who take the CDL Course 2 will have a hands-on opportunity to build consulting skills by being matched with startup companies in the CDL-Atlantic program.

Each year CDL hires at least 1 CRMBA student for the 8-month residency. This offers a diverse range of exposure and responsibilities in operations, recruitment of new cohort and venture management.

Page 15: A DIFFERENT KIND OF MBA

Page15

This course is characterized by a strong emphasis on teamwork and effective problem solving in inter-professional environments. Experiential learning is at the core of MWB. Together with graduate students from the Faculty of Management’s Public Administration, Information Management and Resource/Environmental graduate programs, our CRMBA students will spend the Fall semester of second year working on projects hosted by public, private and community organizations from across Nova Scotia. The MWB group project is a significant undertaking – one that is intended to address a real challenge facing our partner organizations. This exercise in cross-boundary collaboration provides students with an opportunity to build and hone professional and academic skills that can be transferred to future workplaces.

ROWE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS CONNECT In the Fall semester of the second year, teams of CRMBA students find organizations with strategic needs they can address through eight-month projects. The RSBConnect teams scan the business environment, formulate strategies to address the needs and develop implementation plans. The clients gain a fresh perspective on important issues while students gain hands-on experience in applying their knowledge and skills as well as broadening their network.
