The Advent Season, the four weeks leading up to Christmas, isperhaps the busiest, most hectic time of the year. In the breathlessrush to make the most of the season, it is easy to forget the sacredseason is less about “holiday cheer” and more about a “holy child.”
Advent is our opportunity – a gift from God in itself – to re-orient ourselves to receive God’sgreatest gift, His Son Jesus. Here in descending order, are seven things not to do during Advent.
Do not forget your rituals: Do not treat Advent as just another busy time of the year. Rituals inyour personal and family life can help you slow down and prayerfully ponder the gift of theIncarnation, the Son of God made flesh. Take time daily to relax, meditate, and pray.Do not add to the frenzy: If you are a parent, try not to add to the craziness by being franticyourself doing last minute shopping, entertaining, or decorating.Do not forget your Bible: Advent is an excellent time to familiarize yourself again with theBible stories leading up to Jesus’ birth. Read Matthew chapters 1 and 2, Luke chapters 1 and 2and John chapter 1. Do not try to be perfect for the Holidays: The Advent season can be stressful enough withoutallowing the drive for perfection to overwhelm you.Do not overdo gifts: I recently read that children on average receive 60% more for Christmasthan they expect. Remember the focus is Jesus, God’s supreme gift to us, not our gifts to others.Do not forget the less fortunate: Remember the real Christmas story is not set in a warm andcozy house. The real Christmas story is set amidst those who know enduring poverty and danger. What more loving witness could you offer than to identify with the poor and needy by giving a generous gift to make their life better and easier.Do not wait until Christmas Eve to come to Church! Join us in worship each Sunday leading upto Christmas. The beauty of the sanctuary, the hymns, special music, and the proclamation ofGod’s word brings to us a sense of expectancy and alertness for the coming of God into ourworld and into our very lives. If we celebrate Christmas without Christ being reborn in ourlives, we have missed the real reason for Christmas.
Think about these things. Align your heart and mind with God and His Son Jesus Christ this Advent and Christmas season. In Faith, Michael Guffee

Not sure how to get started? Check out the ideas listed below or contactCarly at 256-8383, ext. 102 or [email protected]. l Make handcrafted cards and deliver them with a smile. A hopeful message lifts the spirits.l Deliver cookies to employees at a fire house or police station, or leave them in your mailbox for your USPS carrier.l Use our “Share the Love” cards. Simply give a card to someone to let them know that God Loves Them. You may choose to write your first name or an event going on at Shandon on the card. Or give a card to someone and accompany it with an act of kindness such as the ones listed below.
l Encourage your child to leave unsigned gratitude notes on restaurant tables and store counters. Is there agreater gift than to tell someone that his or her hard work is noticed?
l Shop for personal items and package them with prayers and Scriptures tucked inside. Ask local hospitals ornursing homes to distribute them anonymously to those who are sick and lonely.
l When an elderly or sick neighbor runs errands or goes to the doctor, mow their lawn or wash their windows. An anonymous message of God’s love, tucked behind their screen door, will brighten the day for both thegiver and recipient.
