LinkedIn: How to Use LinkedIn to Find a Job
Create a Profile. Here are tips for creating a profile on LinkedIn.
Consider a Photo. You can add a photo (a headshot is recommended) to your LinkedIn profile.
Keywords and Skills. Include all your resume keywords and skills in your profile, so your profile will be found.
Build Your Network. Connect with other members and build your network. The more connections you have, the more opportunities you
Search Jobs. Use the job search section to find job listings. Join Relevant GROUPS…(like IPE!)
4. Social Media
5. BROADEN your SEARCH to INCREASE your ODDS
“If you are only concentrating on SARNIA, you must realize that the odds of employment in your field
will be greatly limited, and there is a high probability you will not be successful”
Open Letter from a Former CPET Grad to YOU
I am a graduate of the CPET program, April 2010. I have written and passed my 4th class tests A and B. I did not complete my co-ops and therefore left the school with nine months steam time as opposed the full twelve I would have had with an appropriate co-op. I have yet to secure a job as an operator, and therefore still don't have my full steam time.
Plants are looking for someone with a full ticket. If you are missing the additional steam time, you won't be able to get your ticket without being hired…and you will find it very difficult to get hired without your ticket. It’s the ultimate “Catch 22”.
Acquiring the additional steam time on co-op (over and above the reduction through the co-op program) is KEY to your success leaving school. If you have to volunteer to get it, DO IT! If you have to leave the community to get it, DO IT! While you are on co-op is the only time you can get the WSIB insurance employers require for you to volunteer with them. You cannot get that on your own after you graduate!
Taking a co-op that doesn't provide you steam time just so you can make some decent money now can be a costly mistake. You are better off taking a volunteer co-op that provides steam time than a paid one without. The amount of money you will make on a paid co-op without steam time will pale in comparison to the amount you will lose when you finish school and can't find work. I would do anything to go back and make sure I got my co-ops that reduced my steam time. Don't make the same mistake I did. You will regret it!
Yours truly, Rob Newman.
6. Steam Time Issues VOLUNTEER???
This sluggish economy may require short term sacrifice for long term gain...
For the right position, consider volunteering at a company
Gets you excellent exposure to a company and demonstrates initiative and commitment to your chosen profession
Could lead to future paid opportunities if you perform well
Lambton College can provide work place insurance coverage & liability insurance for unpaid work terms.
TSSA Database Available
BEFORE accepting a volunteer co-op w/steam time, DOUBLE CHECK THAT TSSA WILL RECOGNIZE THE STEAM TIME…
