Composite vs ceramic: selection criteria, prognosis and clinical considerations

An ever-increasing demand for functional and aesthetic materials is leading companies to continuous evolution and research. Indications for full ceramic or composite restorations are becoming ever less absolute: consideration of clinical and patient needs can allow the operator to choose one material over another.The versatility of the composite resin, its possibility of layering intraorally, the ease of repair and the fairly good prognosis in the medium and long period, making it a reliable material. The improved properties of newer composite materials to wear resistance and better surface stability allows it in many cases to be a worthy substitute to ceramic materials.By contrast, ceramic materials, often considered the gold standard for color characteristics, mechanical and physical properties, have shown an increase in their ability to produce restorations in even less thicknesses while maintaining dimensional stability, long term prognosis and aesthetics.The choice, therefore, to use ceramic or composite materials could be a dilemma, but this should be seen as an opportunity to have a greater choice of restorative materials for your daily use.Finally many aspects could be discussed as: indications, mechanical characteristics, esthetics appearance, predictability and durability.
