Why Join Lilongwe Wildlife Trust?

SUPPORT A HIGH IMPACT CHARITY

Our work has grown in response to the emerging conservation challenges and now spans wildlife rescue and welfare, education, advocacy, justice and research. We are the only NGO sanctioned by the government to conduct wildlife rescues nationwide and we are mandated to operate by the Judiciary, Police Service and Departments of Wildlife, Forestry, Fisheries and Education, to name just a few - thus playing a central role in Malawi’s fight to protect its wildlife and habitats. We’re also proud to count HRH the Duke of Gloucester, Virginia McKenna (OBE) and Ian Redmond (OBE) among our patrons.

You’re part of the bigger picture: Whilst you work directly with animals rescued from the bushmeat or pet trade you can be sure we are tackling the roots of the problem through sensitising local communities, changing legislation and supporting law enforcement. And, although many of our overheads are funded through grants from international governments and charities, almost all of our wildlife rescue and welfare projects are made possible thanks to the donations that are included in our placement fees.

LEARN NEW SKILLS

We strive for operational excellence and we’re accredited and audited by the top international welfare and conservation bodies. The Wildlife Centre, for example, is the only sanctuary in the world to have obtained all three accreditations from the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA), the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) and the Born Free Foundation PAW scheme. As a result you learn ‘best practice’, working alongside a knowledgeable and passionate team of local and international experts who are keen to share their experiences. Please do share your goals and ambitions with us - some of the permanent team joined us as volunteers, so who knows where your placement will lead!

EXPLORE THE WARM HEART OF AFRICA

Malawi is a beautiful country famous for its friendly people and reputed as one of the safest country to travel in Africa. Days off can be spent cycling at Kuti, walking in Dedza or swimming in the famous Lake of Stars. Your long weekends are perfect for safaris and we get excellent deals to South Luangwa in Zambia, renowned as one of the best African wildlife reserves.

LWT FOR LIFE!

Being thrown together with people from different backgrounds and nationalities, you’re bound to make lifelong friends and we hope that you stay part of the LWT family long after you have left us. Volunteers who joined the team a decade ago are still out there spreading the word and holding the odd fundraiser for us.

RESEARCH VOLUNTEER The Malawi Wildlife Research Institute is run in partnership with the Government to conduct research that will improve conservation management. This means that volunteers not only have the opportunity to spend time out in the field learning new skills but contribute to a body of nationally and internationally valuable research.

DURATION: 2-12 weeks

LOCATION: Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve

QUALIFICATION REQUIRED: None

THE WORK

Elephants

Little is known about the migratory and resident elephant populations and baseline data is also needed for LWT’s illegal wildlife trade programmes. Activities includes large mammal population monitoring (driving and foot transects), development of ID database, herd counts, diet analysis through dung/seed collection and data entry.

Primates

Assessing the effectiveness of our primate releases includes recording pre- and post-release behaviours and other welfare indicators using techniques such as telemetry and GPS. Samango monkeys and baboon hybrids and are also being researched, requiring analysis of their genetic make up.

Other species

A number of other projects are under development, including biodiversity/carnivore/bird surveys. Work will vary depending on the project’s requirements and note that since heavy rains can make access in Vwaza more difficult (usually Dec-Mar), we may need to accommodate you at Kuti instead.

VET EXTERNSHIP LWT runs Malawi’s only wildlife sanctuary and is also mandated to provide the Government’s nationwide veterinary cover through the Wildlife Emergency Response Unit. Programme head, Dr Amanda Salb, is the only in-country veterinarian licensed for game capture and she is supported by two internationally qualified vets, meaning externs are joining a knowledgeable and experienced team.

DURATION: 2-12 weeks

LOCATION: Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, Kuti Wildlife Reserve

QUALIFICATION REQUIRED: Most suited to vet students. Please submit any course requirements with your application so we can plan your placement appropriately. Qualified vets and vet nurses are also welcome.

THE WORK

Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation

Externs will always be expected to prioritise the demands of the veterinary department at the Wildlife Centre (note only staff can attend WERU callouts due to health and safety) which ranges from incoming exams and emergency operations through to health checks and routine diagnostics. Depending on the staff available, a number of other theoretical and practical trainings can be made available. Clinical sanctuary work is understandably variable in comparison to a domestic animal clinic and so the programme is perfect for those looking to gain a broad, real-world experience that spans other aspects of rehabilitation (see the responsibilities of the sanctuary volunteer on p.3).

Clinical Projects in One Health

Splitting your time between the sanctuary and the field, you can learn new techniques and contribute to an important body of clinical research. The current project phase involves wildlife health surveillance and veterinary outreach in the villages surrounding the Kuti Wildlife Reserve. For more information go to www.lilongwewildlife.org/clinical-project-one-health.

LILONGWE WILDLIFE CENTRE

The sanctuary is located within a 200-hectare reserve, home to wild animals such as antelope, crocodiles, small carnivores and hyaena and over 100 species of bird. There are 4km of walking trails running through the forest and along the river, with a bar and café at the visitor centre. It’s just 10 minutes to town with its restaurants, shops and markets, so you are never too far from ‘civilisation’ if you feel like a change of scene. The team are happy to organise movie nights, talks and nights out too and there is wi-fi at the office.

ACCOMMODATION

Since the accommodation is located in the middle of the sanctuary, you are surrounded by the animals you will be working with. The main house has basic mixed dorm-style accommodation sleeping ten, a kitchen, lounge area, bathroom and hot showers with mains electricity. We also have two en-suite chalets (a two-bed and a four-bed) should you wish to upgrade.

MEALS Meals are cooked by our local chef every day except on Sunday when extra food is provided. The menu is vegetarian with a mix of international and local dishes. Let us know if you have other special dietary requirements, and volunteers are welcome to buy in other luxuries or meat if they wish.

KUTI WILDLIFE RESERVE Kuti is located about 90 minutes drive from Lilongwe a few kilometres inland from Lake Malawi. The reserve’s habitats are diverse, ranging from brachystegia and miombo woodland through to grasslands, wetlands, and marshes. There’s diverse wildlife as a result, ranging from large mammals such as zebra, sable, kudu, giraffe through to primates and small carnivores as well as endemic species of butterflies and bats. Due to the lack of elephants and predators, it is possible to walk and cycle in the reserve.

The sunsets are quite spectacular - expect to spend many a night at Sunset deck with a drink in hand. Local communities are friendly, the market town of Salima is a bike taxi ride away and Senga Bay is an easy overnight or day trip.

ACCOMMODATION

The volunteer centre is located in the heart of the reserve. Each chalet can house four volunteers, with two beds in twin rooms. There is also a common area with a kitchen and this shared living space is equipped with solar power, showers, potable water and wi-fi.

MEALS

There is an on-site chef who cooks three meals a day and specific dietary requirements can be catered for.

VWAZA MARSH WILDLIFE RESERVE Vwaza is a national game reserve located in the Northern District of Malawi that covers an area of 986km2. Habitats are dominated by miombo woodland, mopane woodland and wetland marshes and is home to many species of ungulates, carnivores, primates, reptiles (including crocodiles), hippos, elephants and birds.

It shares its western border with Zambia within the Tran-Frontier Conservation Area, making it a site of high conservation value. This was one of the reasons that Vwaza was chosen as a site for Malawi’s Wildlife Research Institute, which is a joint initiative between the Government, Lilongwe Wildlife Trust and Conservation Research Africa.

ACCOMMODATION

The research camp is located on the edge of Lake Kazuni, close to the main gate of the park. Volunteers and students stay in large shared safari tents. There is a large built kitchen, dining and lounge area, a long-drop toilet, bucket showers (water is provided daily from a borehole, stored in camp and heated when needed) and office. There is solar power and although there is no wifi, 3G coverage is available. An outdoor fire and seating area offers beautiful views of the lake and reserve.

MEALS

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided and all meals are vegetarian. Other dietary requirements can be catered for. There is a rota for cooking, with everyone having their turn.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS HOW DO I GET TO YOU?

You are best to fly into Lilongwe (Kamuzu International Airport) and we will pick you up from the airport. The Wildlife Centre is about a 30 minute drive and those working at our bush projects will most likely stay a night there before moving on. Book your flight online through websites like Flight Centre, or directly with an airline - South African Airways (via Johannesburg), Kenyan Airways (via Nairobi ), and Ethiopian Airways (via Addis Ababa). There are offices for all of these airlines in Lilongwe. If you are travelling overland let us know and we can let you know the best way to get here. Arrivals and departures are on Tuesdays.

WHAT ABOUT VISAS?

British, Australian, Canadian or American Nationals and most EU countries are required to obtain a $75 visitor's permit valid for 30 days, with the option to extend for additional 30 days at roughly $10 up to a maximum of 90 days. For other nationalities, please check online or with us.

VACCINATIONS?

For the latest travel advice go to www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk/destinations/africa/malawi.aspx. We require a negative TB test and strongly recommend rabies vaccinations. Malaria prophylaxis is (e.g. Doxycycline or Malarone) is compulsory for all volunteers and interns.

WORKING HOURS & FREE TIME?

Working hours are dependent on the animals we have in at the time and on the level of care they need. Wildlife Centre volunteers will work from 8am till 5pm, but during orphan season feeds may be scheduled during less sociable hours, so occasionally there can be long days or even some night shifts. However if this is unsuitable for you the team can re-arrange your schedule. Those at our bush projects are likely to start their days earlier with a break in the middle of the day.

Staff and volunteers get one day off a week and a long weekend off every month, which is perfect for a safari or a trip to the lake.

WHAT’S IT REALLY LIKE?

We can be a little biased, so don’t just take it from us! Check out the reviews on our website.

Any questions, however small, are most welcome! Please email [email protected]
