ANTEROOM BASICS

The word anteroom derives its name simply from combining the Latin word ante “before” and room. So in the most simple terms, an anteroom is a smaller room that comes before (or one enters before) a larger room. A waiting room could be classified as an anteroom, as could a vestibule or a lobby.

In relevant terms of hospital construction, maintenance, and infection control, an anteroom is much the same but has a very specific purpose. In this case, an anteroom protects people from contaminated air by isolating a larger contaminated unoccupied room and its contaminated air, from the non-contaminated occupied area.

At HEPACART, we define an anteroom as a HEPA-filtered, negative-air chamber to isolate workspace from patient space.

In a hospital, an anteroom has a few different applications -- all of them designed to protect patients from dust and associated airborne pathogens (most important) but also from noise (machinery, tools) and odor pollution (chemicals, adhesives, paint).

ANTEROOM FOR MAJOR CONSTRUCTIONMajor construction projects within a patient room are among the most hazardous to patients because they represent a very high risk potential for lots of dust, microscopic pathogens and debris. When some areas of your facility are under construction and others are not, it is critical that those areas stay isolated and sealed off from occupied spaces.

ANTEROOM FOR MAJOR CONSTRUCTIONWhile a hospital wing is under construction, it can mean too many useable patient rooms sit empty. By employing several Anterooms -- along with other protective measures -- a facility can negotiate a partial shutdown without compromising infection control, which means more rooms stay open for patients.

ANTEROOM FOR ONGOING MAINTENANCE Regular maintenance is required for virtually every piece of equipment and system in a healthcare facility. In many cases, regular maintenance can stir up dust, debris, particles, spores, or germs that pose a threat to hospital patients and staff. Some examples of this type of maintenance include:

• Reflooring

• Drywall repair

• Ceiling tile replacement

• Window Replacement

• Painting or floor repairs

• In-room cabling, electronic device upgrades

When maintenance events take place in a certain room, corridor, or wing, an AnteRoom can keep harmful particles from escaping into other parts of the facility.

ANTEROOM FOR INFECTION CONTROLCDC guidelines stipulate “for patients who require both a PE and Airborne Infection Isolation, use an anteroom to ensure proper air balance relationships and provide independent exhaust of contaminated air to the outside or place a HEPA filter in the exhaust duct.” 1

USES FOR AN ANTEROOMANTEROOM FOR EMERGENCY ISOLATIONDuring times of crisis, including the spread of extremely infectious diseases or bioterrorism, hospitals will likely be faced with more isolation cases than isolation rooms. An anteroom in this situation is a literal lifesaver, where the following can be accomplished:

• Vacuuming or blowing off contaminated clothing

• Changing out/into of PPEs

• Final cleaning of tools

• Changing into/out of shoe covers

• Removing debris containers

Most importantly: All of the contaminated air is pulled into a HEPA-filtered negative air machine and ported into the desired space, away from anyone who could be infected. These anteroom capabilities mean it is compatible with the HRSA Critical Benchmark #2-2 as well as CDC Guidelines Environmental for Infection Control in Health-Care Facilities for smallpox and viral hemorrhagic fever (VHF).

The use of an anteroom can eliminate the need for solutions that cost more -- either in budget or in time. Some of the alternatives that an anteroom can replace are:

• Disposable plastic sheeting

• Costly and non-portable fixed anteroom (made of raw materials)

• Inflatable anterooms that are difficult to store & clean

Furthermore, because the anteroom is useful for emergency and non-emergency purposes, it is extremely cost effective.

ANTEROOM USE & GREEN CONSTRUCTIONMany healthcare facilities use plastic sheeting or disposable plastic anterooms to seal off different areas for the purpose of dust containment and infection control. Because this sheeting is cut specifically for one use and is not easy to disinfect, it is typically not reused or recycled. The resulting waste can add up to significant amounts over time.

This type of containment process is hardly comforting for patients, making facility areas look unfinished and potentially unsafe.

Using an anteroom such as those made by HEPACART™ means reusable isolation that is easy to disinfect and use again and again. The appearance is clean and professional for patients as well as staff. Put best by a repeat HEPACART™ AnteRoom customer, “it means you are serious about infection control.”

The HEPACART™ AnteRoom is an external aluminum passageway that serves as an entryway into any larger room undergoing maintenance, renovation or construction.

All models include the heavy-duty, magnetically sealing aluminum HEPACART™ AnteRoom module, floor levelers, three windows, flex-hose adaptor and shut off plate. A HEPA filter equipped negative air machine connects easily to the adaptor for CDC level air filtration.

The HEPACART™ AnteRoom provides total room isolation, a containment measure that mitigates patient risk from work dust and related contaminants. With external negative air machine adapters on either side of the enclosure, the HEPACART™ AnteRoom provides air filtration, dust collection and infection control.

Finally, when the HEPACART™ AnteRoom has reached the end of its useful life (after years of room isolation applications), it is 99% recyclable aluminum. Even at the end of its life, it is a much greener alternative to plastic, studs, drywall, etc.

Reuseable anterooms are the best way to provide temporary dust containment and infection control in high risk healthcare environments. Anterooms are easy to use, easy to clean, and extremely durable. Most importantly, an anteroom combined with proper air filtration makes patients and staff safer than more wasteful alternatives.
