It encompasses the entire 35-block neighborhood bounded by University Parkway, West Walnut Street and South Roan Street. Over its 26 years, the Yard Sale has grown from a handful of neighbors participating to over 200. And with that growth, its popularity has risen also, with over 15,000 buyers from all over the region and neighboring states. South Side Neighborhood Organization (SNO) asks participants to donate to help fund the Yard Sale and other activities they sponsor in the neighborhood and city. These activities include the monthly Music In The Park series, the 4th of July Parade, the Backyard Garden Tour and Historic Homes Tour. Donations are also used in maintaining the DogiPot clean-up stations, cleaning and refreshing the roundabouts at intersections, printing of the SNO newsletter, maintaining the SNO website, and donations to various non-profit organizations and churches throughout the city. The Yard Sale has become an important annual fundraising opportunity for local churches, charities and student groups. Some of these non-profit groups include Johnson City Schools Orchestra, The Downtown Clinic, PEO Higher Education for Women, families wanting to adopt children, Little City Roller Derby Team and University School International Trips. Besides great yard sale finds, many participants offer delicious home- cooked foods, including breakfast, lunch and desserts. Numerous Walnut Street restaurants will also be open during the Yard Sale. In addition to advertising and working with the City to coordinate Police and EMS, SNO provides clean portable restrooms at Veteran’s Park beside South Side School during the Yard Sale.

A new Johnson City organization wants you to think about the old Johnson City. Named “imagine Johnson City”, the organization is dedicated to the preservation of the history of Johnson City, the public education of the value of historic preservation and the advocacy for

preserving our historic buildings, homes and structures. Collecting the stories of the people who lived and worked here is also a major focus of the group.

imagine Johnson City is looking at various approaches to preserving our history. By combining forces with neighborhood groups, historical groups such as the LangstonHeritageGroup,Johnson’sDepot,WataugaHistoric Association and arts organizations, a strong base for preservation can be built.

Sound like a cause you would like to participate in, then join in the effort, it is for all of Johnson City. Membership is open to anyone; you do not have to live in Tree Streets or even in Johnson City. You just have to care about the preservation of the city. A basic membership is $10 or a patron membership is $50.
