1. ABOUT OUR COUNTRY:Slovenia is a Central European country. It lies on the crossroads of the Alps, the Dinaric Mountains, the Pannonian Plain and the Adriatic Sea. It borders Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia. Its territory is quite diverse. There are the Alps in the North West and the Pannonian Plain in the East and South East. The land is hilly in the South and in the South West the Sub- Mediterranean part reaches the Adriatic Sea. The plain central part of Slovenia is called the Ljubljana Basin after the capital Ljubljana.

The United Kingdom lies to the northwest of mainland Europe. It is made up of four countries: Scotland, Northern Ireland, England and Wales.

OUR VILLAGES PODPEČ AND JEZERO

The villages where we live are called Podpeč and Jezero. They lie in the southernmost part of the Ljubljansko Barje wetland, 15 km from Ljubljana. Behind the villages there is a hill St. Ana rising to the altitude of 482 m. The surrounding mountains are densely forested.

The village of Podpeč: the old bridge over the Ljubljanica River.

Our Town – Windsor

Windsor is just a few miles west of London. More than 7 million people visit Windsor each year. The main tourist attractions are Windsor Castle and the Legoland theme park.

The branch school Jezero

Jezero means lake. It is about 4 kilometers from the main-campus school. It is located in the marshland of Ljubljana, 12 km from the capital centre. On the ground floor are two classrooms (pupils aged 6-8). On the first floor, there are two apartments for school teachers. The branch school, which will be rebuilt in the year 2010, dates from 1924. Slovenian primary school system tends to locate primary schools, at least the lower grades, as close as possible to the children’s home. Branch schools are independent in terms of organization, but function as dislocated units of main-campus primary school.

OUR SCHOOL – DEDWORTH MIDDLE SCHOOOL

Our school is located in a neighborhood west of Windsor Castle. We have 450 pupils aged 9 to 13. Before our school, they go to a variety of First Schools. After our school, they go to one of two Upper Schools, either Windsor Boys’ School or Windsor Girls’ School.

HISTORY OF OUR VILAGE

The wetland Ljubljansko Barje (Ljubljana Marshland or swamp) lies at an altitude of 290 m. The region used to be a lake 7000 years ago. At the time of the first settlers, called Pile Dwellers (»Mostiščarji«), the water on the lake was 3m deep. Four thousand years ago, these settlers built their settlements on the lake's shore and in its shallow parts. They drove wooden piles into the ground and built wooden houses on them. This way they were safer from wild beasts.

Around 2000 years ago the water started to dry up. The lake gradually changed into a wetland.

The Pile Dwellers were followed by the Celts, Illyrians, and Romans. The Romans were the first to begin drainage projects on the wetland.

However, after the end of the Roman Era, the land became wet again and covered by a thick layer of peat, which the villagers used to cut out.

Windsor also has army barracks for the Life Guards, the Blues and Royals, and the Coldstream Guards.

Windsor Castle is one of the main residences of Queen Elizabeth II. She spends many weekends here. The castle was built in about 1067 by William the Conqueror. Many former kings and queens are buried here in St. George’s Chapel.

village of Podpeč dug limestone. Limestone was used to build the city of Ljubljana, which was then called Emona. It was even sold to Italy and transported by boats along the Ljubljanica, as this was then the easiest means of transport.

Because of the railway construction in 1849, boating on the river grew less important. Nowadays factories and households dispose refuse into the Ljubljanica and the life in it is dying.

Ljubljansko barje/ Ljubljana Wetland was different because the Ljubljanica filled the area with finer gravel and mud. Since depositing was slower than sinking, a lake formed as a result. The last lake, the home of the Pile-Dwellers, disappeared a few thousand years ago.

The river Ljubljanica flows through the villages and has quite a big influence on their looks and the lives of their people. Its role has been important throughout history. As the river often floods in autumn and winter, the fields on its banks are suitable mostly for growing corn or as grazing fields and meadows.

is best known for flowing through London, but it also flows through our town, Windsor.

By 1962, especially in London, the combined impact of untreated sewage and industrial pollution had killed off every sign of life in the river. In recent years, its health has improved dramatically and the river is playing an important role in recreation.

village. The first talks about a dragon sleeping in a cave under the hill of St. Ana. Whenever disturbed, it begins to wriggle its tail, which causes floods.

The second legend speaks about fairies that used to live in the village Jezero, which actually means »lake«. The fairies used to dance at full moon in the valley where there is a lake now. They did not want to be watched dancing. They lived at peace with the villagers and gave them advice on where and when to plant their fields. Thanks to their advice, farmers always had a good harvest. However, there lived a villager who did not respect the agreement with the fairies. One night he sneaked too close to them. One of the fairies reminded him of his neighbor Katra. He approached the fairies, but they noticed him. He struck a rock with his axe. Water came out of the rock and flooded the valley. This is how the lake emerged. Since then the village people have never seen fairies again and their crops have often been ruined by floods.

Windsor has been home to the British Monarchy for more than a thousand years. Legend says the King Arthur’s Round Table once stood on a top of the Round Tower at the Castle.

OUR LANGUAGES: SLOVENIAN

Slovenian or Slovene is an Indo-European language that belongs to the family of South-Slavic languages.

Slovenian is one of the few languages to have preserved the dual grammatical number from Proto-Indo-European.

The earliest known examples of a distinct, written Slovenian dialect are from the Freising manuscripts (972 – 1093). Literary Slovenian language emerged in the 16th century thanks to the works of Reformation activists Primož Trubar, Adam Bohorič and Jurij Dalmatin.

Pronunciation of some Slovenian words: The Slovene consonants are mostly pronounced as they are spelled:

- h is pronounced as German ch and not as the English h (he);

- j as y in En. in word yet; - l as a middle European l:- s as s in the English word sit.- ž as s in the En. Word measure.

OUR LANGUAGES: ENGLISH

The main language is English but other languages include Welsh and Gaelic. The United Kingdom has one of the largest numbers of Gujarati, Hindi, Bengali, Urdu, and Punjabi speakers outside of Asia. Many Eastern European languages are also spoken.

ENGLISH language is a West Germanic language developed in England. Germanic speaking peoples from northwest Germany (Saxons & Angles) and Jutland (Jutes) invaded Eastern England around the fifth century AD. The native Celts adopted the language and culture of a new ruling class (it is still a matter of debate). The Norman Conquest came in 1066. The Norman kings and nobility spoke only Anglo-Norman, which is close to Old French.Early Modern English can be traced back to the time of the greatest drama writer, William Shakespeare.
