We have had a very busy October as you can tell by the 2 volume newsletter last month and the events
since it was published. Hope you were able to make all/some NTC events. If you didn't enjoy one/some of
the NTC events in October, you must drive a Mustang!
Wanna Race was 10/16 at Denton track. Some came out to race or watch the other cars do some serious
racing. Rudy Martinez, Marc Tuton, Bill Roy, Jerry Jackson, Don Caver, Donald Caver, David
Caver,Shawn Patterson,Phil Purvis, Fern Duron, JimBob Gilbert, saw the digs. Shawn Moran saw us off at
Salt Grass. Thanks to Marc Tuton, for getting us out for the drags. We have talked this to death for 2 years,
Marc made it happen. Maybe not AA/F Altereds ( Marc's favorite ), but some great race cars and some
really good times at the track in Denton.
Meanwhile, George Johnson was in Vegas for the Barrett-Jackson auction. He said he saw some steals.
The prices have taken a beating with the recession. Top car was $400,000 and it was a charity sale car. No
million dollar cars at this one. Barrett-Jackson says it will do an Orange County, Calif. auction next year
( we'll see ). The rare original and numbers matching stuff held up pretty good and some customs too.
The NTC fall cruise, co-ordinated by Air-Boss Gene Brennan was 10/17. We started the cruise at the
Cavanaugh Flight Museum in Addison. NTC was given free roam from 8:00 am until our departure time of
10 am. Gene did a great job of setting the club up for some good pictures of planes and cars. What a
remarkable museum. For those that did not make this trip, make plans to go out and see the aircraft displays
for sure. Those at the museum were: Frank Manzare ( Huff ), Mark Lohse, Rudy Martinez, Fern Duron,
Chris Polito, Robert Willis, Gene Brennan, Bill Roy, Jim Turner, Terry Taylor, Walter Manda, Shawn
Patterson, Daryl Bird, Jeff Genauldi, Mark Millerborg, Bob Appelwick, Jay Redmon, and Terry Hicks.
Members also showing up at Rod's Car Craft included: John Oustalet, Dennis Murphy, and Bill Shaw ( see
his video of this event - awesome!! ).
Most of these good folks and Camaros made the scenic cruise to Rod's Car Craft in Wylie. Rodney Moore
has built a fine shop and is ready to work on your Camaro. He hosted the shop tour and had some fine Ribs
for lunch. Rodney also had the NTC commerative T shirt for NTC members ( look for some to hit Speed
Vision ). Thanks to all that made this super fall cruise and a "Big Thanks" again to Gene Brennan for his
work co-ordinating this event and Rodney Moore for the hospitality and grub.
North Texas Camaros made a contribution to Christian Classic Cruisers for their Toys for Tots campaign
at the season ending show October 17, CCC said to thank NTC members.
The second Lone Star Loop was 10/15 - 10/18 looks like several NTC folks made it. Brian Pence, Steve
Parker, Brenda Howard, and NTC friend Keith Bogdon made it.
Oct. 24-25 Swap Meet was at La Grave Field in Ft. Worth. Those buying and selling were: Bill Roy, Mark
Lohse, Fern Duron, Manny Valdez, John Hazel, Steve Gillespie, Chris Recker, Frank Manzare ( Huff ),
Rudy Martinez, Gary Dolezal, and Fred Mc Kinley.
Those at ADRL were, Rudy Martinez, Steve Metcalf, and Jerry Jackson.
Don Caver waded through 15 other race cars at the Muscle Car Challenge Drags this month to win his class.
The 67 Blue Camaro coupe was a wheels up winner for sure. Congrats Don..

Our annual NTC Dyno Challenge was held Saturday morning, October 31st at Speedtek Performance,
Hwy 121 south in Haltom City. First car went on the drums around 9:30AM. . First Gen Camaros owned
by NTCC members were eligible for awards. This was the November Ralley Point , I know it was 10/31.
Thanks to Cris Gross for co-ordinating ( for 3 years in a row ) this fun NTC event. Those spinning and
spectating were: Huff, Fern Duron, John Oustalet, Terry Taylor, Rudy Martinez, Mark Lohse, Marc Tuton,
Manny Valdez, Jerry Jackson, Erik Eichinger, Bill Roy, Ken Stewart, Shawn Moran, Chapman Mays, Brad
Howell, Jeff Genauldi, Fred Mc Kinley, Robert Willis, & Kelly Gorham. Those winning the classes:

November 1969 was the last production of the first generation Camaro. Despite the myth that there were
some 1969 body Camaros built in 1970, it's not true. So 40 years ago this month they packed up the first
gen stuff and started on the second gen stuff. I think this calls for a beer to celebrate.
Dutch Treat Luncheon will be December 12 at Pappa's B-B-Q in Dallas 11am. This is the December
Ralley Point and year end event for NTC folks. Hope to see a great turn out. Address is 2231 W.

The 4L80-E automatic was introduced in 1991 and is essentially a Turbo 400 with an overdriven turbine
(input) shaft, lockup converter, and electronically controlled shifting. There's no vacuum modulator,
governor, or speedometer gear. The forward gear ratios are 2.48 first, 1.48 second, 1.00 third, and .75 fourth.
The gears are shifted "clutch-to-clutch". Meaning, for first gear, only the forward clutch is applied. For
second gear, both the forward and intermediate clutches are applied. For third gear, the forward,
intermediate, and direct clutches are applied. And finally, for fourth gear, the forward, intermediate, direct,
and fourth clutches are all applied. The 4L80-E (RPO option MT1) is able to handle vehicles up to 8000 lbs.
GVWR. Introduced in 2001, the 4L85-E (RPO option MN8) is able to handle vehicles up to 8500 lbs.
GVWR. The 4L85-E has improved reaction and output planetary gears to handle additional torque. Also,
the overdrive roller clutch was redesigned and improved in 2001.
The goal of this build is to put together a 4L85-E automatic transmission capable of handling 1000
horsepower. Shifting must be fully automatic with converter lockup in overdrive. Manual shifting must also
be available through the entire RPM range of the engine. All bushings, bearings, seals, o-rings, washers,
frictions, steels, roller clutches, sprag, and anything electrical will be replaced.
STEP 1: Buy and read the books
Would not even attempt the build without first reading through two books:
1) Automatic Transmission Service Group's (ATSG) Techtran Manual for the 4L80-E. 2) GM Powertrain's 4L80-E Technician's Guide, Second Edition.

STEP 2: Buy the 4L80-E special service tools
Already had the all of the hand tools needed to
service a Turbo 400 (spring compressors, bushing
remover/installer set, slide hammers, etc). Not
wanting this build to be a struggle, I found and
bought off eBay, a complete 4L80-E special service
tool set.
Found a clean 2000 model 4L80-E (MT1) in a junk
yard for $650.00. If available, a 2002-2003 4L85-E
(MN8) from an 8.1L truck would have cost me
between $1000 -$1200 + shipping. So buying the
2000 model 4L80-E and upgrading to the 2002 5-
pinion planets was about the same as buying a scarce
2002-2003 4L85-E outright.
STEP 3: Find a good, late-model 4L80-E/4L85-E
STEP 4: Disassemble the transmission
and clean the case
Completely disassembled the transmission. Anything
that was rubber or worn was removed. All that was
left in the case was the park pawl lock. Scrubbed it
with a stiff brush and GUNK. Sealed the inside of
the transmission with duct tape and plastic plugs.
Bead blasted the outside of the transmission and
coated it with Dupli-Color ceramic engine enamel.
Now that the case is ready, the rear case
bushing needs to be installed.

The stock bushing is on the left. It is retained in
the case by "staking it" with a special tool to
prevent it from "walking out" of its housing bore.
A better solution is to use the Sonnax rear case
bushing on the right that has flange to prevent
"walk-out". It also has more bushing surface
area.
A draw bar is used to press the
bushing into the housing bore.
STEP 6: Assemble the Gear Train
The output shaft bushing is removed using threaded
bushing remover. It screws into the bushing like a
pipe tap and then it's pulled with a slide hammer.
The new bushing is hammered into place with a
bushing driver.

The mainshaft is installed in the rear ring gear
and retained with a snap ring. All Torrington
bearings are replaced. The mainshaft and ring
gear assembly in placed on the output shaft.
Here's the main difference between the 4l80-E and the
4L85-E, output and reaction planetary gears. On the
left, are the 4-pinion carriers of the 4L80-E. On the
right, are the 5-pinion 2002 type carriers of the 4L85-E.
Although there are different aftermarket gear ratios
available, the stock ratio, 5-pinion 2002 type carriers
are the strongest available.
STEP 6: Assemble the Gear Train
Here's the 5-pinion output carrier
assembly placed on the rear ring
gear and retained with a snap ring.
A new thrust washer is placed on the
output carrier assembly.
A new bushing and low roller clutch are installed on
the reaction carrier. The reaction carrier assembly is
placed on the output carrier assembly. The sun gear
and sun gear shaft are installed into the reaction and
output carrier assemblies.

New lip seals are installed on the
intermediate piston. Here, the piston is air
tested for leaks.
New teflon, one-piece seal rings are installed on the
center support using special service tools.
STEP 7: Overhaul the Center Support
The teflon seal rings are stretched when installed and must be "resized" using a special service tool.

The low/reverse band is carbon fiber and is now
installed in the case along with the rear selective
thrust washer and center support spacer ring. The
selective thrust washer will determine end play.

The dial indicator is mounted on the case and
ready to take the end play measurement. I used
the original selective thrust washer (.085")
resulting in .020" end play which is on the loose
end of the specification (.005" to .025").
I removed the center support and gear train
assembly, replaced the .085" selective thrust
washer with one .095" thick, and reinstalled the
assembly. With the .095" selective thrust
washer ,the end play was exactly where I wanted it
(.010").

Featured Car Questionnaire Jeff Genualdi's Bumble Bee 69 Camaro
How did you acquire the car? My first Camaro in 1973 was a 1969 Camaro with a 327 3-speed. When I went to
the same college as my brother (who is two years older than me), we sold my Camaro, split the money and shared his
Camaro, which was my Mom’s 1969 Camaro (identical to Mark Lohse’s, Butternut Yellow, Black Vinyl top, Black
Comfort Weave Deluxe Interior) that he got for a Graduation present in high school in 1971. When he graduated
from college, he got a company car with his first job and gave me my Mom’s old Camaro. I had this car for 2 years
until it got mushed in a 7 car pile-up (kind of looked like a Volkswagon). My Dad bought me my current car that was
LeMans Blue with a lighter Blue color instead of the vinyl top, and a stock parchment interior. I kept my mushed
Camaro and canolbolized its’ Deluxe Black Interior, air shocks, sound system, wheels, and trailer hitch.
How long have you own the car? 30 years
Anything interesting happen during your acquisition or ownership of the car? About 27 years ago when
I had a little extra money a switched from the stock 307 with a power glide to a 1979 Z-28 350 with a 350 Turbo glide
transmission. About that same time I put in a sun roof. Twenty one years ago when I bought my house, I flew to FL
and drove my car to TX. I went to over 20 body shops to get my body work done and painting. The best quote I got
was around $7,000. In those days the car was not worth that much. Then I came across a RS 396 ’69 Camaro about
16 years ago and bought it and started canalbolizing off of my small block Camaro that I was going to use as a “parts
car”. Then I got married and had two kids and my Camaros sat. After 15 years, my wife gave me an ultimatum to
“fix em up, or sell them”. Well that’s a no brainer, I started fixing up my RS Camaro. Up until last year my small
block ran, but it was a serious rust bucket and just took up a space in the drive way. If you could have given me a
nickel for everyone who stopped by to buy it from me, I’d have a few hundred dollars. Last year, since I saved $600
not going ocean fishing, I got a wild hair and decided to start fixing it up. I bought a cowl hood and two front fenders
for my car due to rust and dents. Through the NTCC, I was told about Duke’s Paint and Body Shop in Saginaw and
they quoted my $500 to replace a rear full qtr panel, so I was off and running having all of the body work done. I
replaced the: hood, fenders, door skins, both rear qtr’s, deck lid, rear body panel, front and rear spoilers, floor pans,
trunk pan, dash panel, dash pad. I had the sun rood welded close and put in a vinyl top and head liner. I stole the
Deluxe Interior back from my RS Big Block and had Main Street Upolstery install a new Yellow and Black
Houndstooth Interior. I put in sound proofing, new carpet, and a reconditioned console unit with gauges. Fern gave
me a stock steering wheel that finished of the interior. Before Duke’s painted my car, I re-did the brakes, front end,
and put in a new cam, lifters, timing chain, body bushings, radiator, gas tank, radiator core support, inner fender skirt
(I got from Jay Redman), power steering pump, and heavy duty sway bar (I got from Steve Metcalf, who got it from
Bill Roy). With the new front end and sway bar, she’s never driven so good! I switched my stock front end to a Rally
sport front end which meant I had to get back up lights, cut out the holes, and get new rear tail light. After it was
painted, I replaced the bumpers, mirrors, and door handles. I had my Dad’s 1969 trailer hitch chromed and installed.
To finish it off, I retired my Keystone Classic Wheels and put on a set of SS Wheels.
Presently the car is at Mark Lohse’s house (work shop) and he is in the process of helping me detail the engine
compartment, powder coat my exhaust manifolds, and pulling the engine so I can get it re-built to obtain more
horsepower. I was disappointed at my showing at the recent dyno, and since the engine is out …
What would you do differently with the car? I would have bought a Muncy 4 speed transmission I was offered
about 25 years ago and an SS Hood. Also, when I switched from my 307 to my 350, I was offered to install a solid
lifter 350 that put out about 300 HP. I did not know how to adjust lifters, so I blew it off and had the ’79 Z-28 350
that rates about 170 HP installed. What a mistake! I still need to get differential posi-traction.
Any company or service that deserves high praise for helping with your car? My hat is off to the North
Texas Camaro Club. Everyone is so gracious with their time, Camaro knowledge, and general car wisdom. Doug
Berry is a wealth of information and has given me good advice. Mark Lohse and I bonded since he was building the
“Mellow Yellow” about the same time I was working on the “Bumble Bee”. His advice and “hands on” help have
been instrumental in getting my car where it is today. My build has taken about a year and a half, and I am not quite
done.
