Officer Profile: Vice President – Joe DarterThe Plum Creek Shooting Society isfortunate to have some greatshooters and great cowboys amongits officers. Joe Darter (Tom Morris)stands tall among both. I asked JDhow he came up with his alias.Turns out his great, great unclefrom Leon County (1858-1932) wasnamed Joe Darter. JD told me thatOld Joe was quite a character, having killed two men and stabbedanother. A saying aroundMadisonville (in Madison County, just south of Leon County) was, “Be

careful or I’ll pull a ‘Joe Darter’ on you”, which means, becareful or I’ll get ya! JD says he is not trying to emulate OldJoe. Quite the contrary, but Joe Darter, with a familyconnection, was just too good not to use as his SASS alias.

JD shot his first cowboy matches with the TexasHistorical Shootist Society in 2002. Editor’s Note. Trailhead, the THSS annual match at Gunsmoke, the THSS range justnorthwest of Columbus, Texas, is one of the great cowboy actionshooting matches in the country. JD’s wife, Pat, is fromColumbus. They were visiting family, heard about a

cowboy shoot and went to watch. Joe alreadyowned half of the guns he needed and thought, why not? Justice Lily Kate (SASS #1000), wife ofJudge Roy Bean (SASS #1) and formerly GateKiller Kate, was the first person JD met cowboyshooting. He says both Kate and the Judge aredear friends today. JD got really serious aboutcowboy shooting while living and working inCalifornia for few years. In one stretch, he shot49 of 50 weekends. In California he made manygreat friends and learned from many verytalented shooters, including Badlands Bud, DocShapiro, Wild Root and other shootersextraordinaire. Cowboy action shooting is not the onlyshooting Tom has ever done. He says heexpended truckloads of shot at skeet ranges inyears past. He also shot IPSC (InternationalPractical Shooting Confederation) and bowlingpin matches “back in the day.” Tom has been ahunter since age 8 and still loves upland-bird anddove hunting. He got his first decent pistol (aStoeger .22 Luger) when he was 17 and has beenperfecting his handgun skills ever since. He sayshe will currently “shoot anything that goes bangor puts out a pellet.” My kind of guy! JD shoots in the Wrangler or 49r categorymost of the time, and is working toward being adecent Senior when the time comes. He alsoenjoys shooting Gunfighter, Duelist orCody/Dixon occasionally. He says, “It’s just toomuch fun not to try different categories.” He’s

even shot acouple of matchesas Plainsman (cap& ball pistolsDuelist style, black powderrifle andhammered SxS).When asked what

guns he shoots, Joe swears by his Ruger OldModel Vaquero pistols. He says,

They are indestructible bricks out of the box.Once smoothed and tuned, they will run fastand effectively. I’m accustomed to the weightof the old models. I’ve blown timing out ofmore than one imported Colt P clone.

He also shoots a tuned and short-stroked 1873 or1866. He is partial to the Border Model 73 (20”barrel) that has been tuned by Cowboys &Indians or Cody Conagher. JD loves 1897shotguns and shot them exclusively for eightyears. He claims to be a pretty fair hand atpulling four shells at once for reloading. He triedan SKB SxS a couple of years back and has stuckwith it. He says, “They make a great cowboydouble if properly tuned.” JD also loves long-range “stuff.” He has played with the big boresat matches and hasexperienced some success. He also enjoys shootingWild Bunch and Western3-Gun. JD is responsible forPCSS having W3G in itregular line- up of events.Joe has been to End-of-Trailonce, but never to WinterRange. He says, “Thatneeds to change.” He has shot many regionaland state championships in four different statesover the years. He has won a couple of annuals(including our own Battle of Plum Creek) and haswon his category many times. His goal in thebigger matches is always to finish in the top 10-20and to make the shoot-off, if possible. Tom is pure Texican, having grown uparound Houston. He and Pat enjoyed California, but he says, “Texas is home.” He and Pat live inSeguin and both work for Zachry Industrial Inc.,which is headquartered in San Antonio. Pat is amanager in project purchasing and Tom is a

logistics and support services manager. Theyboth travel extensively and put in long hours, butlove what they do. Tom says they work too muchto have many hobbies, but in addition to huntingand cowboy shooting, he enjoys snow skiing and

golf occasionally. He says he shoots guns betterthan golf. He is a big film buff and loves to read, particularly WWII history. Like everyone on the PCSS Board of Directors,Joe Darter wants us to be a premier Central Texascowboy shooting venue. He says, “We are on ourway!” He “wants all, from young to old, tohave fun when theycome to PCSS.” As anofficer, he says he will bedoing “whatever isneeded, amigo” andadds, “Get ready to havemore fun!”

Find Chuck!!

After a couple of months of limited participation, Idecided I must be making it too hard to FindChuck. I decided to make it a little easier in Mayand six people found him and emailed me. Seeabove for where he was in May. Mentioned thedispatches this month are Lincoln Drifter, DeltaRaider, Skinny Steve, Mesquite Creek Mike,Boon Doggle and Sterling Sage. Believe it or not,I had complaints that I made it too easy. Thismonth, if you look carefully, you will find Chuckin two photos. You will have to find both to bementioned in the dispatches, but email me even ifyou only find one, so I can report the numbersnext month. Good luck to all!

What’s it mean? RegulatorLots of Cowboy Action shooting clubs includethe word “regulator” in their names, e.g., theGreen Mountain Regulators and the TravisCounty Regulators. So what are regulators?Loosely speaking, at least in the Old West, regulators were men who organized themselvesinto committees of vigilance when regular lawhad broken down or did not exist. Thesevigilantes took enforcement of the law, as well asmoral codes, into their own hands. The termvigilante derives from the Spanish equivalent, meaning private security guards. Committees ofvigilance were often little more than the meansby which old scores were paid off, but they filleda need. They were composed of citizens whoorganized without the official recognition of lawto eliminate elements they considered to be adanger to life and property in the absence ofpeace officers or effective law enforcement. Inthe American West, committees of vigilance wereset up mostly against the activities of killers andof horse and cow thieves. As the name implies, committees of vigilance attempted to regulatesociety when necessary. Continued next page.

“Regulator” continued. Most often they were able to“clean” society more thoroughly and rapidly thanlawmen attempting to do the job by the book couldhave done. Although vigilantes came into beingwhen bad elements made it impossible forordinary folks to carry on a normal way of life, they sometimes acted from sheer impatience withthe law. Their activities could then become whatone would call “regulated lynchings.”

Long Juan Here!We had a great shootSaturday, June 2nd,with a PCSS monthly-match record number of 58shooting on four posses. Inhonor of PCSS PresidentDragon Hill Dave’s recentreturn from six weeks in Italy, the theme for all five stagescenarios written by StageMarshal Phantom was spaghettiwesterns (Fistful of Dollars, AFew Dollars More, The Good theBad and the Ugly and Once Upona Time in the West). Delta Raiderand Kitchen Kate supplementedthe theme with a great spaghettilunch following the shoot.DHD was heard to comment,“This is better spaghetti thanany I had in Italy.” We had anoutstanding group of visitorsand some shooters returningafter long-time absences.Dream Chaser “sponsored” agroup traveling from AransasPass, Bishop, George West,Laredo and McAllen. We hopeeveryone had fun and will comeback again soon.

Complete scores are postedon the PCSS website –www.pccss.org. They are alsoposted on our Yahoo Group andwere emailed to all shooterswho have an email address.Phantom was fastest overall, followed by Joe Darter,Skyhawk Hans Verdadero Danand Pine Tree. Dream Chaserwas fastest woman. We hadshooters in 19 categories, 13 ofwhich had more than onecompetitor. Congratulations toall category winners!Congratulations to also to ourclean shooters: Bolo Bob,Boosey Babe, Chisos, NuecesSlim, Pine Tree, SkyhawkHans, Spyder John, Tejas Boband Wandering Man.

I owe Big Iron Patnode anapology. His rifle jumped off atable Saturday, resulting in aStage Disqualification. As if thatweren’t bad enough, I had ourscoring system set to award 999seconds to anyone with an SDQ.That is correct for “rank”scoring, but incorrect for total-time scoring, where the numbershould be 150 seconds, 5

seconds for each target plus 30seconds. I have now reset thedefault so it should scorecorrectly in the future. We hopethere are no more SDQs, but thescore will be correct if we do.Big Iron was very graciouswhen I confessed my mistake. Thanks for that.

PCSS officers had a shortBoard meeting after the shoot. Two decisions of note weremade. (1) The Battle of PlumCreek this year will be a regularmonthly shoot (six stages onSaturday). Agarita Ranch ishosting a military reunion thatweekend. Delta Raider is surewe will have many interestedspectators and likely some whowould like to try our cowboystyle of shooting. (2) PCSS hassubmitted an application to hostthe 2013 Texas State Match.Hosting a state match is lots offun and lots of work. If we areselected, everyone in the clubwill need to help. DreamChaser and others from SouthTexas say they will help. Thanks!

Our Western 3-Gun matchscheduled for Sunday, June 30th,has been canceled. It conflictswith a Texican Rangers WildBunch Match and just a weekafter End-of-Trail, when at leasta few of our members are likelyto be plum tuckered.

On the fourth Saturday ofMay, Sterling Sage (mydaughter) and I shot for the firsttime with the Green MountainRegulators. We had a great

time shooting and visiting witha great bunch of cowboys andcowgirls. We knew many of theshooters from other clubs, butenjoyed meeting several we didnot already know. GreenMountain is one of severalSASS-affiliated clubs in CentralTexas. Bar Diamond is theirnew president, with NadaChance serving as vicepresident, Miz Ella assecretary/treasurer and GoldDog as Range Master. Bar andMiz Ella returned the visit byshooting with us at our Junematch. Hope they and morecome again. Gold Dog is PCSSmember and shoots with us

regularly. The Green Mountainrange is located about 12 mileseast of Marble Falls or 26 mileswest of Cedar Park, just off FM1431 on FM 1174 in BurnetCounty. Sterling Sage says1431 from Lago Vista west getsthe award for prettiest drive to ashoot. We enjoyed shootingZeke’s Music Hall, a new stageconstructed in memory offounder and long-time clubpresident, Singin Zeke, whodied in December 2010.Particularly impressive was theshadow box display of Zeke’sleather. Sterling Sage had areally good match, shooting B-Western for the first time with anew-to-her ’92. She had onlyone miss for the match and shebeat me! The Green MountainRegulators also have a long-range rifle match on Sundaysfollowing the usual monthlymatch on the fourth Saturday.Sterling Sage and I plan to giveit a try. We were reminded byour experience that we have agreat bunch of SASS-affilivatedclubs in Central Texas. Theyinclude not only the Plum CreekShooting Society and the GreenMountain Regulators, but alsothe Texican Rangers betweenFredericksburg and Comfort(where Sterling Sage and I shoton June 9th), the TejasCaballeros between DrippingSprings and Johnson City, theTravis County Regulatorsbetween Smithville and Bastrop

and the Alamo Area Moderatorsand San Antonio Rough Riders, who have relocated to a rangenear Devine, just southwest ofSan Antonio. Remember tosupport your local CentralTexas clubs. You can prettymuch shoot every weekendwithout having to travel muchmore than an hour, dependingon where you live.

A final note – we are tryingto stay current with informationon the website and will continueto expand and enhance. Be sureto visit www.pccss.org whenyou have questions about thePlum Creek Shooting Society. The News page is where I havebeen posting updates aboutwhat’s going on with PCSS.You can also find the scores andsome back issues of the Gazette.I will continue to upload backissues as time permits. The Legend of Hell’s Gate: An American ConspiracyThe movie. There’s a new

western movie in town! In AprilI attended a screening of The

Legend ofHell’s Gate:An AmericanConspriacy.For anyoneinterested inTexas history,Old Westfirearms,

clothing and accoutrements, watching the movie is aworthwhile investment of time.Greed and crime are the order ofthe day in the action-filled film, but the movie is not perfect. Asone reviewer says, “the film isan ambitious, sprawling andmuddled take on the allegedlytrue story” associated withHell's Gate, a cliff formation that

rises out of Possum KingdomLake in Palo Pinto County. Thereviewer goes on to say,“There’s a good western rompin there somewhere, but viewershave to sift through a lot ofsuperfluous detail to get to it.”

Inspired by actual events, the film blends legend and

history. Through theexpeditions and encounters ofthree outlaws, it reveals aversion of the legend of Hell’sGate . Gambler, JamesMcKinnon (Tanner Beard), is anIrish desperado seeking hisfortune in America. Bountyhunter, WillEdwards(EricBalfour),becomes hispartner incrime whenthe two end up on the runtogether after Edwards’ attemptto bring a sleazy saloon ownerto justice. The result is amassive shoot-out (initiated byDoc Holliday, no less) in thestreets of Dallas circa 1876 thatleaves several dead and turnsMcKinnon and Edwards intofugitives. Later, Kid CalledKelly (Lou Taylor Pucci), goeson the lam after stealing from atubercular businessman, whoclaims to be John Wilkes Booth, what might be the PhiladelphiaDeringer used to assassinateAbraham Lincoln. WhenMcKinnon and Edwards crosspaths with Kelly, they realize hepossesses something morevaluable than gold (theDeringer). If they can just stay

one step ahead of the law, theyhave a shot at making history.Their interwoven stories provethat everyone has a hiddenagenda and no one is innocent.McKinnon, Edwards and Kellyare a classic spaghetti-westerngroup of anti-heroes, three menwho would normally havenothing to do with each other, but who are thrown together bycircumstances beyond theircontrol. They bicker endlesslywhile robbing East Texas blindas they dodge a posse oflawmen, Comanches and apsychotic fur trapper on the wayto what will either be escape oran apocalyptic showdown.

The film is pretty good inparts. The period dress, theperiod firearms and the actionare great. The film neverthelessseems at times to bog down in

unnecessary sub-plots. Inconclusion, the movie deliverssome good western action, butknowing some of the historicdetail in advance would it easierto keep things in context. TheLegend of Hell’s Gate: AnAmerican Conspiracy is availablethrough Video on Demand nowand is scheduled for release onDVD in mid-June.

The rest of the story. Asfrequently happens, gaining alittle bit of knowledge made mewant to know more. Iwanted toknow more about the historyand geography of the areawhere the film took place. I hadat least a rudimentaryknowledge of Palo Pinto

County, the Brazos River andPossum Kingdom Lake. I didsome work not too long ago for Iclient involving a disputerelating to some oil and gaswells near the lake. I recentlyread a biography of CharlesGoodnight. I knew thatGoodnight and Oliver Lovingfirst ran cattle in the area andthat the jumping off point forthe Goodnight-Loving cattletrail was at Fort Belknap innearby Young County. I did not

know many details. Here issome of what I discovered.

Possum Kingdom Lake. TheBrazos River (originally Rio delos Brazos de Dios or “The Riverof the Arms of God”) is thelongest in Texas. For centuries, the Brazos cut a path throughour great state. Although itsheadwater source is near Clovis,New Mexico, the Brazos Riveritself begins in Haskell County,Texas. From there it passesthrough or near modern dayGraham, Waco andBryan/College Station, flowingmore than 800 miles beforeentering the Gulf of NewMexico just south of Freeport.Where the Brazos River flowsthrough the Palo Pintomountains, just 75 miles west ofFort Worth, a geologic wonderwas carved through limestoneand cedar. The resulting canyonwas a perfect site for creation ofa reservoir. In the 1940s, theBrazos was dammed to form thePossum Kingdom Lake. Thelake filled within three months, submerging what was left of thesmall town of Pickwick. Thelake, which is 65 miles long and3½ miles wide, has more than300 miles of shoreline thatconsists of sandy beaches, rockcliffs and mountains. PossumKingdom Lake is home to thefamous Hell's Gate, a sheerbreak in the cliffs around thelake.

Palo Pinto: What does itmean? The scrub oaks andjuniper (or cedar) that cover thehillsides in Possum Kingdomturn bright oranges, gold andyellow in the fall. They werecalled Palo Pinto, which roughlytranslates as “painted posts.”

Pickwick. The town ofPickwick, which is mentionedprominently in the movie, wasfounded in the 1850s along theBrazos in the area that becameknown as Possum Kingdom. The Brazos Indian reservation, later relocated to OklahomaTerritory, was nearby. Landaround the flood-prone BrazosRiver and the town of Pickwickwas purchased for the buildingof a new dam and the formationof a new reservoir. Theremnants of Pickwick moved afew miles to the east andbecame New Pickwick.Portions of the old town, including an iron bridge, townwell, building foundations andchimneys, can still be seen whenthe lake is down.

Why is it called PossumKingdom? In 1906, a Russianpeddler, Ike Sablosky, came toMineral Wells, which is on the

Page 8: A Chronicle of the Plum Creek Shooting Society...Once smoothed and tuned, they will run fast and effectively. I’m accustomed to the weight of the old models. I’ve blown timing

Page 8

border between Palo Pinto andParker Counties. Mineral Wellsis named for mineral springs inthe area and was at the time afamous health spa. Sabloskycame to recover his health.Later Franklin Roosevelt alsocame to Mineral Wells “to takethe waters” in hope they wouldcure his paralysis resulting frompolio. While living in MineralWells, Sablosky saw anopportunity to get into the furand hide business. The canyonsand valleys of the Brazos Riverwere a paradise for raccoon, possum, fox, coyote, bobcat, cougar and other fur-bearinganimals. Sablosky’s bestpossum hides came from cedarchoppers and hunters innorthwest Palo Pinto County. He called these men “the boysfrom Possum Kingdom”. Thename grew more and morepopular and the area along theBrazos in northwest Palo PintoCounty became known asPossum Kingdom. When thelake was created in the 1940s, itwas named Possum KingdomLake.

Possum Kingdom has lots ofTexas and cattle history. For atime, Young and Palo PintoCounties were home to OliverLoving and Charles Goodnight, two pioneering cattlemen whoinspired Texan LarryMcMurtry's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Lonesome Dove. The Goodnight-Loving Trail

began at Fort Belknap, nearGraham, in Young County, justnorthwest of Possum Kingdom .From there, the trail traveledsouth and west across theStaked Plains (Llano Estacado) toHorsehead Crossing, then northalong and across the Pecos Riverto Fort Sumner, New Mexico(where cattle were sold to feedIndians in a nearby reservation),and finally on to Denver andWyoming.

Hell’s Gate. Although themovie would suggest otherwise, legend has it that Hell's Gate got

its name in the early 1800s froman incident involving furtrappers making their waydown the Brazos in what is nownorthern Palo Pinto County. The trappers’ pack animals wereloaded with trinkets and rot-gutwhisky to barter for furs. Theymet some friendly Comanchewho had furs and were willingto trade. After spending severalunproductive days trying totrade beads and trinkets for theComanche's finest pelts, thetraders broke out their cheapwhiskey to help break theimpasse in the negotiations. Assoon as the Indians passed out,

the trappers loaded their burroswith Indian furs and stole awaysouth down the Brazos. Withthe rugged terrain and theirpack animals overloaded, thetraders had covered only a fewmiles before the Comanchesobered up and set off inpursuit. With the Indiansclosing in, the traders foundthemselves trapped at a point onthe Brazos with high limestonecliffs divided by a small creekforming a natural gateway tothe river. One of the traders, preferring the rocks twohundred feet below to thetreatment he would receivefrom the irate Comanche, sworeas he leaped from the cliff thathe would rather go through theGates of Hell than return thefurs to the Comanche. Eversince, that spot on the Brazoshas been known as Hell's Gate.As you might imagine, Hell’sGate features prominently in theconclusion of the movie, whichwas set in a time before PossumKingdom Lake was created. Themovie suggests a differentreason for the name. Watch anddecide for yourself which storyyou like better.
