NEWS Dear CLF Family of Believers, Happy New Year! It’s time for Acts 2:42! I'll explain in a bit. We tend to know where we’ve been and what is currently capturing our attention in the present. But the future…what will it have for me? Looking forward is a natural habit for most people. There’s a wonder and a curiosity for what lies ahead. I want to share some thoughts about that for you in this article. Looking back, you may remember we spent the fall focusing on a six week course called “Next Steps – Discipleship Series.” Everyone had the invitation to look into the Bible to find the answers to some very important questions. What a joy it is to know that the Bible has the BEST answers to life’s most IMPORTANT questions. We shared this journey in private devotional study and then each Sunday gave further thought to the scriptures and truths revealed as the Sunday message was delivered. That is good but it certainly is not ideal! If we could have dug up spiritual treasures in scripture during personal study and then combined that with small group discussions about those discoveries then we would have experienced a much better environment for understanding, growth, and application! Because of that, we are inviting you to experience something new, something important and something ongoing in the future of CLF. As we roll into winter (late January or early February) we will launch a new vision for Small Groups that lasts well beyond a 6 to 8 week focused study or commitment. We’ve done a lot of that in the past. Most recently with the Rick Warren material called, “40 Days In The Word.” That was a wonderful experience for all who participated but the bummer came when the 40 days ended. We met weekly for that study but as we look forward we want you to imagine a longer, ongoing commitment to a small group. We expect our small groups to meet 2 times a month on the day/times that fit the group. We will call our groups 242 Groups, based on Acts 2:42 and following that says, 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles… 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” The practices and pieces of DISCIPLESHIP are found in this passage: teaching, fellowship, sharing meals, praise, worship and prayer…all the better in a small group, a 242 group! We’ll be talking and teaching more about this on Sundays in January! We are on a mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ at CLF. 242 groups will provide what we are missing in the ministry that Christ has left us to fulfill…”Go into all the world and make disciples.” To launch our groups we will utilize a resource called "Real-Life Discipleship - Equipping Disciples Who Make Disciples.” It’s a 12 week study and we will ask each participant to purchase a training manual (about $15 each). We all spend our money on what matters most to us, so set aside a few dollars for this material. Of course, if you need assistance purchasing materials, we’ll find a way to help. We don’t want a single person to not participate for lack of funds. As we move in this direction, give some thought to your participation…attending, leading a group, co-leading a group, hosting a group, or co-hosting. More info to come as we move into this new year! Looking forward to a victorious year, Pastor Doug CLF Newsletter December 2014
