18Brian Bliss

The first player in the history of Southern Connecticut State University to have his number retired, Brian Bliss epitomizes the Owls’ soccer program.

A two-time ISAA Division II All-America selection for the Owls in 1985 and 1986, Bliss was a four-year starter for coach Bob Dikranian. He was a three-time captain as the Owls compiled a 60-14-8 record and appeared in three NCAA Division II tournaments.

A member of the United States National and World Cup team which competed in the 1990 World Cup competition in Italy, Bliss was also a member of the U.S. team in 1995 in the Copa America tournament and the U.S. Cup tournament.

He represented Southern and the U.S. in the 1986 and 1987 World University Games and at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea.

Bliss made further history for Southern when he was the first player selected in the 1987 Major Indoor Soccer League draft, taken by the Cleveland Force. The Most Valuable Player in the 1987 MISL annual All-America Classic, he played professionally in Germany’s second division with the Carl Zeiss Jena Club; and with the Columbus Crew, New York/New Jersey Metro Stars and Kansas City Wizards of Major League Soccer.

He was formerly the head coach with Kansas City and the Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer.

Bo OshoniyiThe consummate goalkeeper, Bo Oshoniyi led Southern

to an .860 winning percentage and two NCAA titles in his four seasons.

He capped off his career as the recipient of the Golden Boot Award as the nation’s outstanding collegiate goalkeeper, the first Division II player in history to earn the award.

The Poughkeepsie, N.Y., resident tied a national collegiate record with 50 shutouts in his four seasons and a goals against average of just 0.47.

Oshoniyi was a two-time NSCAA First-Team Division II All-America selection and a two-time New England Collegiate Conference player of the year. He started 79 straight games at Southern, allowing only 40 goals in 84 games.

He played in 1993 with the United States National “B” team and competed with the U.S. World University Games team at Buffalo.

Oshoniyi, a member of the 1995 U.S. Cup team, played with Kansas City and Columbus of Major League Soccer.

Oshoniyi is currently the head coach at East Tennessee State University and also serves as a scout for U.S. Soccer.
