The Chamber will be emphasiz- ing and promoting an important business slogan over the next few months; Buy Oakdale – Be- cause It Mat- ters! Never be- fore has that mantra been as important as it is today. While our lo- cal businesses view the local shopper as a bread and butter staple of their business we need to be clear; the local businesses are a bread and butter staple for the support of our way of life in our commu- nity. One percent of all sales tax generated in Oakdale stays in Oakdale. Every item bought in Oakdale helps pay for police, fire, parks, recreation programs, Senior Center, etc. All the things that help make Oakdale a great place to live. Think about all the businesses that support your kids’ candy drives, cookie sales, Little League sponsorships, soccer, and foot- ball events. Without that business support our community would not be what it is today, a great place to live, work, and bring up a family. If I had a choice of making Modesto or Oakdale a great place to live based on where I shopped, I choose to shop in Oakdale. Because I am an engineer I am burdened with the curse of logi- cal thinking, it stinks sometimes but follow me on this issue. The AAA Club says it costs today’s car owner $0.55 per mile to drive a car. It’s 12 miles to Modesto. That travel alone puts an out-of-pock- et expense of $13.20 onto any- thing you buy in Modesto. I don’t know about you but, I have two kids, a wife and chores and er- rands up the gazoo and my time is valuable and precious. Even at minimum wage, an hour driv- ing back and forth to Modesto is at least valued at $8 in lost time. So there you have it: if you shop in Modesto, you’re out of pocket and time lost expense is over $21. So ask yourself before you get in that car and burst off to Modesto, could I have saved that $21 by shopping in Oakdale. So for everyone who is cost and time conscious, it really does matter…Buy in Oakdale.
