a certified medical practitioner 22 Jan 2020 Assessment Guidelines 2020 In line with the changes to assessment in schools announced by the Ministry of Education in September 2018 to let students discover the joy of learning and look beyond examinations and grades, there will be only one assessment per subject per term that counts towards the year-end score. Teachers will continue using different forms of assessments like quizzes, worksheets, class work and homework to gauge their pupils' learning but these will not be taken into account. There will be no mid-year examination at Secondary 1 and 3. Please note that Sec 1 D&T and Art are conducted only in Semester 1 and these subjects will conduct its end-of-course examination at the end of Semester 1 during the conduct of mid-year examinations. Assessment Feedback and Reports All students will be provided feedback on their work. Results are reported through the Progress Reports (at the start of Term 2 for learning progress in Term 1 Continual Assessment (CA), and start of Term 4 for Term 3 CA) and semestral reports (mid-year and end-of-year). From 2019, these reports will not show a student's position in relation to class or cohort, to allow each student to focus on his or her learning progress. Failing marks will also not be highlighted, and other academic indicators like students' L1R5 (English plus five relevant subjects) or L1R4 score will not be reflected for the lower secondary levels. Absence from Tests and Examinations A student who is absent for a paper due to illness must produce a medical certificate from a certified medical practitioner registered with the Singapore Medical Council to cover his/her absence. For students with a valid reason for their absence, ‘VR’ (valid reason) would be reflected for the CA/SA and a proration of the marks will be reflected in the semestral reports. A student without a medical certificate will be given zero mark for the paper that he/she missed. Letters from parents will not be accepted. Any student who is absent for any test/examination will not be able to sit for that particular paper and the paper will be given as a practice paper. There is no retest or make-up test and this is consistent with that of the conduct of the national examinations where there is no re-take of examination paper missed.

Assessment Guidelines 2020

In line with the changes to assessment in schools announced by the Ministry of Education in September 2018 to let students discover the joy of learning and look beyond examinations and grades, there will be only one assessment per subject per term that counts towards the year-end score. Results are reported through the

Progress Reports (at the start of Term 2 for learning progress in Term 1 Continual Assessment

(CA), and start of Term 4 for Term 3 CA) and semestral reports (mid-year and end-of-year).

From 2019, these reports will not show a student's position in relation to class or cohort, to

allow each student to focus on his or her learning progress. Failing marks will also not be

highlighted, and other academic indicators like students' L1R5 (English plus five relevant

subjects) or L1R4 score will not be reflected for the lower secondary levels.

The table below provides details on how absence will affect the student: With Medical Certificate (MC) Without Medical Certificate (MC) All affected component(s) will be reflected as “VR” – Valid Reason in the Report Book

“0”- zero mark will be reflected in the Report Book.

Computation of subject total will NOT take into consideration the component(s) with “VR”

Computation of subject total will include the component(s) with zero (0) mark.

The school practice to award zero mark for absence from assessment is to maintain the authenticity of the test/examination papers and ensure there is fairness for all students who sat for the papers.

We seek parents’/guardian’s cooperation NOT to send your child/ward to school for tests/examinations if he/she is unwell. Do take your child/ward to the doctor when he/she is unwell and get a medical certificate so that the school can process the results accordingly.

Promotion Criteria

For promotion to the next level, please refer to the promotion criteria found on Page 38 of the Student Handbook. The promotion to the next level of study of a student absent from any sitting of a test/examination with both valid reason or MC will be subjected to the discretion of a panel made up of the School Management Committee comprising the School Leaders and Key Personnel, the class FTs and subject teachers of the level. The panel will exercise their professional judgement in the absence of a comparative set of results with a student’s peers, and take into consideration the whole development of the student in and beyond the classroom throughout the year in the decision making process. In addition, for students whose marks are prorated, their eligibility for subject prizes will be determined by the panel. Academic Conduct, Integrity and Responsibility

All students are responsible for upholding the highest standards of academic conduct and integrity in all academic undertakings. Any act of academic dishonesty will be subjected to disciplinary action. Support from Parents/Guardians The school values parents’/guardian’s support in monitoring your child/ward’s learning and progress at home. The assessment plans for Semester 1 (CA components and schedule) is appended for your reference. We hope the assessment schedule will provide a platform for parents/guardian and teachers to work together to engage our students to achieve to the best of their abilities.

[Note: There may be changes in the assessment plan and schedule as the year progresses. The Subject Teachers will keep your child/ward updated of any changes in the assessment plan.]
