A CELEBRATION OF EXCELLENCE
H
2020
The Helena Education Foundation honors the 2020 Class of
Distinguished Scholars and Distinguished Achievers,
and the Distinguished Educators who inspired them
EXCELLENCE is never an accident.
It is always the result of high
intention, sincere effort, and
intelligent execution; it represents
the wise choice of many
alternatives—choice, not chance,
determines your destiny.
—Aristotle
STUDENTS A Celebration of Excellence recognizes exceptional students who have demonstrated their efforts in the class-room, school and in the community day after day, year after year. Distinguished Scholars were selected on the basis of criteria developed by high school students, teachers and administrators, including grade point average; number of honors, advanced placement and other higher level courses; total credit hours and activities and community service. Teachers nominated Distinguished Achievers based on excellence in a specific curricular area, leadership, service or overcoming obstacles to achievement. Criteria for Distinguished Scholars and Achievers are regularly reviewed and updated to remain compatible with current course offerings. EDUCATORS A Celebration of Excellence honors Distinguished Educators. Each student identified an educator who has had a significant, positive impact on his or her life and wrote a short message about why that educator was selected. The Helena Education Foundation salutes these fine educators and thanks them for sharing their talents, knowledge, creativity and love of learning with our youth. They make a difference in our schools and community, one student and one class at a time.
Welcome to a
A CELEBRATION OF EXCELLENCE! A Celebration of Excellence provides public recognition of extraordinary public school students and outstanding educators. By honoring achievements of these individuals, the Foundation:n Demonstrates community appreciation
for the efforts of public school students, educators and parents;
n Acknowledges the critical partnership among schools, home, business and the community;
n Provides a positive reinforcement for younger students and a goal for which they can strive; and
n Involves the community and businesses in building awareness and confidence in our public schools.
OUR MISSION The Helena Education Foundation enriches education in Helena Public Schools through investment of time, talent, funding and resources, providing students, staff and the community unparalleled opportunities.

e will not soon forget the Spring of 2020, least of all this year’s Distinguished Scholars and Achievers and their Distinguished Educators. The spring of 2020 was historic—a time when Helena joined the rest
of the world in combating a deadly virus. We stayed home; we wore masks; businesses and organizations closed, and computers became our classrooms.
School administrators, educators and students rallied together to find effective and creative ways to continue to provide and engage in learning, as well as to support one another.
In keeping with state safety recommendations, we thought it irresponsible to host a gathering of 400 plus people—as a result the Celebration of Excellence banquet could not take place this year. The following pages reflect our students and educators illustrating what it was like to teach and learn from home. Additionally students created videos reading the essays they wrote for their educators—these videos are available on the hefmt.org website. Educators selected books that would be meaningful to their Distinguished Students and submitted personal inscriptions to be included. These messages contain words of inspiration, hope, admiration and pride.
The 2020 Celebration of Excellence students and educators are distinguished for the same reasons their predecessors were distinguished: they achieved high academic success; they are leaders; they worked hard; they achieved. This class is exceptional for additional reasons. During a global crisis, they endured extraordinary changes, sometimes fear and often exhaustion, while demonstrating resilience, perseverance and sacrifice for the greater good. There is no doubt that this experience will influence their futures in profound ways, perhaps with a new perspective of themselves and a wider lens through which to view those around them. Distinguished Students of the Class of 2020, we look forward to watching what you become and how you shape the world.

High School District staff nominated Distinguished Achievers based on excellence in a specific curricular area, leadership, overcoming obstacles to achievement, or service.
In most educational settings, the guiding principles are quite reserved: be responsible, be respectful, be a learner. However, at PEAK this credo goes without saying; instead, the primary rule is “No death at PEAK.” In my memory, the biggest proponent of this mantra was Erin Maxwell. It was her reversal of the typical regulatory ranking that showed me there wasn’t just one way of doing things. As a result, I’ve learned to look at issues from myriad viewpoints—broadening my understanding of both myself and the world.

Through our mutual love of finding knitting projects on Ravelry and sharing our favorite tools for bullet journaling, Mrs. Parrish and I have connected on a deeper level than just English teacher and student. In addition to her bubbly persona and willingness to accommodate busy schedules, she profoundly and genuinely cares for her students’ wellbeing. In her class, she brings in interesting new ways to think about writing and reading, which have encouraged me to expand my understanding of English. Thank you so much, Mrs. Parrish!

Mr. Paul Phillips is my Distinguished Educator and my current physics and AP chemistry teacher. This year, these classes have been filled with laughter, sharing stories, and most importantly, educational excellence in the sciences. I can say without hesitation that he is the man who ignited a flame, making me yearn to increase my knowledge in these courses. I am delighted, fortunate and honored to have had two classes this year with Mr. Phillips, and I know that his positive impression will follow me wherever I may go in life.

When choosing a teacher to honor as my Distinguished Educator, I could think of no one more deserving than Ms. Fjeseth. She is patient, extremely self-sacrificing, and even in the midst of her crazy job, she maintains an easy-going, positive attitude. She is so much fun to be around and she’s always laughing! Going into high school, I only knew one thing for certain: Mr. Harris was the orchestra director. He’d been my 6th grade orchestra teacher and his upbeat spirit carried over. I can only assume that it is this energy that’s enabled him to endure the nonsense of chamber orchestra. Between the orchestra’s antics and managing four other groups, his perseverance and dedication has always been something to admire. Mr. Harris has given the gift of music and kindness, and taught that, no matter the circumstances, anything is achievable.

There is not a day in Mr. Lane’s ceramics classroom that is ever quite the same as the day before. Mr. Lane’s unique ability to mentor his students, while still giving ample space for creativity to run wild, makes him truly one of a kind. Mr. Lane is a brilliant teacher, whose charisma and honesty keep every student engaged and accountable. Who knew that an elective art class would have one of the most profound and lasting impacts on my life, and that is all thanks to Mr. Scott Lane. When I was a ten year old, Mrs. Kempa was confident, bold, strong, and everything I wanted to grow up to be. “Girl, you are going to move mountains!” she told me, and she got me to believe it too. Mrs. Kempa encouraged us to create a balance of schoolwork and art and things we are passionate about. Mrs. Kempa took me under her wing and created a comfortable atmosphere for kids to grow and truly explore and express their identities. Muy buenos dias! Como estas? Bien? Cansada? Every morning, Señor Lyng greets me with a big smile that never fails. No matter what it is we do in class, Señor Lyng does it with the biggest smile, and, with having me in class, the most patience. AP Spanish is no easy feat, but Señor tackles it with no problem. Mr. Baty makes the choir room a safe space to express yourself and connect through music. My sophomore year I thought about dropping out, but Mr. Baty was always there for me. One day right before winter break, he let me rant and cry through lunch. He told me to come up with my ten favorite songs and he would do the same, then we would share with each other after break. I now realize spending my break picking my favorite songs distracted me with something to look forward to. On a recent choir trip, Mr. Baty would say “family meeting” and that’s truly how it feels. I stayed in school because I knew I couldn’t leave Mr. Baty or my second family.

In 6th grade I joined Orchestra as a violinist. Just like most of us, I had no aspirations and not a care in the world for that piece of wood. I almost dropped Orchestra then and have considered it several times since. But every time I was close to going down to the counselor’s office and saying, “I’M DONE,” Mr. Cleary inspired me to stay. He taught me that the best way to live is to keep playing and to know that a few cranes will make all the difference.

Mr. Jenkins really got us to pay attention to detail and would never, ever give out a 100% on any drawing we pro-duced. The highest grade I ever got on a drawing was 19 31⁄32 out of 20. The summer before my sophomore year, I received a letter in the mail from my new English teacher. The letter contained the syllabus that needed to be turned in on the first day of school. I remember telling my mom, “Homework already? I am not going to get along with this teacher.” Little did I know, this teacher would change my life. After a few weeks in Mrs. Schulte’s class, I decided that her class wasn’t too bad. We had fun discussions and sometimes she would even read to us in class. Slowly, my sophomore English class became my favorite time of day. My junior year, I switched around my schedule just to be in Mrs. Schulte’s class again, and this year I am her T.A. Mrs. Schulte not only challenged my writing, but challenged my opinions and morals which shaped me into who I am today. Thank you, Mrs. Schulte.

In my eyes, Mrs. McMahon is the perfect teacher in terms of her ability to teach, hold our attention and ensure everyone is on the same page. Her relatively new position teaching calculus and adapting to its complex content is nothing short of inspiring. I was never bored during her class. Mrs. Cope started out as just another middle school teacher to me, but quickly became so much more. She went above and beyond to make sure kids, especially those with special needs, felt safe at school. She refused to give up on even the most difficult students. One of the greatest things she’s done for students was every Friday she and another teacher hosted a homemade breakfast before school. She enlisted my help those mornings because she knew I needed the extra support from struggles at home, school and in life. She did all this amid worsening health issues. She taught me how far a bit of love and commitment can go.

Mr. Caffrey has been a very influential teacher for me throughout high school. While I may not have had him for all four years, I was still involved with Fly Fishing Club (although not as much as I should have been) and seeing him in school. For the classes that I did take from him, I always had lots of fun and learned valuable information that has helped to direct me and my plans for the future. A specific story I remember about Caffrey is on a fishing trip when he was teaching us about nature and telling stories of his college days, which should probably not be repeated here, but I do remember that it was very inspiring to have a teacher that would go the extra mile to be in the great outdoors with his students, teaching them about what he loves to do. It was a regular morning in freshman band. We were in the middle of playing some piece when Mr. Zehr calmly set down his baton and walked back into his office as we kept playing. Without warning, he emerged with his large archery bow. We finished playing and looked at him with caution and confusion. Of course it turned out to not be a threat but an analogy for the precision with which he wanted us to play. On any given day, Mr. Zehr does more than create better musicians; his students are gifted with wisdom and life lessons that flow from a seemingly endless supply of memorable stories, anecdotes and kindness.

Most teachers use the first day of school to introduce themselves and the course they are teaching—but not Mr. Peterson. Right when I sat down in his classroom on the first day of sophomore year, he excitedly exclaimed,
“Everyone take your notebooks out; we have lots to do today.” Shortly after the initial thoughts of dropping his intimidating class had passed, I came to the realization that Mr. Peterson was not the stereotypical strict math teacher I presumed he was. Although I never technically had her as my World Cultures teacher, I did get to be her teacher’s assistant during my sophomore year, and looking back at my 3 ½ years of high school, I can say with confidence that time spent in Room 24 was never wasted.

Julie has had a huge impact on me over the past eight years. As the coach of our high school swim team, she worked with me to better myself not only as an athlete but as a person. Coaching with her motto “just be good humans,” she taught me the value in being a teammate and a friend. She has always been supportive, encouraging and understanding through every challenge I’ve faced, and I am so grateful for everything she has done for me.

Mr. Partridge calls it like he sees it and goes in depth on topics other teachers may not find important, but they are ( for example, the 2008 financial crash). He inspires me to find flaws in the system and informs me to the point that I’m angry enough to want to go and change the world.

CHUCK JOHNSON AND PATRICIA HUNT
Recently I was hospitalized. A few weeks in, I received a letter from Mrs. Johnson that included immeasurable amounts of encouragement, love and support. That letter was one of the things that kept me hopeful and helped me push through. It represents only one of the many reasons Mrs. Johnson is both a role model and a nurturer of me and so many other lucky kids in Helena. She spent countless hours explaining long division, which is applaudable, but her kindness is really what makes her the best teacher I have ever had.

Mrs. Cook’s art room has been my home for four years. Inside this home, I felt like I had someone who truly believed in me and cared about me. In the art room I got to laugh and grow. Mrs. Cook challenged me to be creative and to push my limits with every painting, sketchbook assignment, and now, an independent study. Through her teaching, I learned the value of hard work and how to embrace my individuality. Under Mrs. Cook’s wing, I found a safe home to be myself.

In 9th grade, I had the privilege of taking Mr. McKim’s Honors Earth Science class. He changed my life. I have yet to meet another person on this planet who loves their job as much as he does. Mr. McKim’s enlivening teaching presence fills the entire school with a level of energy that few can compete with. He approaches each lesson with the same love and care he gives to every student. All kids have a place in his heart, and he has a very important place in mine. Mr. McKim inspires me to be a better person and I am honored to be able to call him a friend.

ALLEGIANCE BENEFIT PLAN MANAGEMENT
At the end of my junior year in Ms. Leaphart’s class, we had just finished our “Dream Big Project” where we dreamed of anything we wanted to do to make the world a better place. My dream was to go to Africa and teach African children who don’t have access to school. Ms. Leaphart gave us all $1 so we could accomplish our dream. I was not in it for the dollar, I was in it for the support to accomplish anything, and I will never give up on my dream for you, Ms. Leaphart.

Throughout high school, Adam Clinch has been a role model and a mentor. As a teacher, he cultivated a sense of pride in my learning that allowed me to become excited for each new day of class. His phenomenal teaching allowed me to conceptualize difficult topics. Outside of his passion for knowledge, Mr. Clinch also dedicated himself to finding the best in every student and thoughtfully created learning opportunities that allowed students of every level to come together and succeed as a group.

Not only is Mr. Duncan an amazing teacher, but he is also a great person. After getting to know Mr. Duncan as a Science Olympiad coach, I was excited to participate in his senior Science Seminar class. It turned out to be one of my favorite classes because of the unique, hands-on learning opportunities we had. Our class discussions on current issues helped show how science is applicable in my everyday life. Ultimately, Mr. Duncan is someone whom I respect and admire for his passion and dedication as a teacher. Thank you, Mr. Duncan.

I chose Mr. Garza to be my Distinguished Educator because he always does everything in his power to help every student succeed. When you’re in his class, you never question whether or not he wants to be there. I currently work at the Helena Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic where I get to further my medical knowledge and gain experience through rooming patients, charting and observing surgeries. This opportunity would not have been possible without Mr. Garza and I will forever be thankful for everything he has done to help me succeed.

In first-grade, Mrs. Bartsch asked every student for a “hug, handshake or high-five,” before they left the classroom each day. The personal connections she strived to make with each student would foster my own love for learning, literature and science. Whether it was after-lunch read alouds of The BFG or projects on the importance of spiders, Mrs. Bartsch approached all subjects with a passion and excitement that was easy for all her students to absorb. After my time in first-grade, her door was never closed to a former student, from second grade all the way to my senior year and beyond. Thank you endlessly, Mrs. Bartsch!

“Hard work pays off. It may not pay off when you want it to, but it does.” I had just failed my European History semester final when Mr. Schulte said these words, “48 percent. That’s not scholarly.” But his quote got me through that moment of failure and many others. Mr. Schulte is certainly a great history teacher; his desire to become a better teacher and person is contagious. He’s challenged me to think — but more importantly, he’s been the catalyst for much of my growth.

My Distinguished Educator is Mr. Miller. He was the teacher who sparked my interest in robotics engineering. I remember the first day I walked in to Robotics Club; it was a week after the competition kickoff and the club was looking for members. I participated in First Lego League as a kid, so I figured why not join? As soon as I walked in, everyone was nice to me and welcoming. After Mr. Miller retired, I continued with robotics and have found the path I want to take to get my life started.
