This catalog was formally 1)egull in 1967 when WC reccivcd a grant from the National Science Foundation (GB-6565) for the preparation of a Diptera Catalog of the Pl~il i~)pints , and we were planning to eventually prepare a manual of the families and genera of Oriental Diptera. I t has becn pointed out by some of our colleagues that this would be difficult and impractical until a comprehensive and organized summary of the Oriental Diptera fauna has been prepared. This project was initiated to fill this need. At the beginning it seemed doubtful tha t this work could be completed within a reasonable period. Specialists are difficult to find for some groups, and all are busily engaged with their respective work and projects. The extraordinary response from all specialists we have asked for help was probably the most gratifying result of this cooperative effort.

The Oriental Diptera fauna is virtually uncataloged. Bigot's (1891, 18/0"- "Catalogue of the Diptera of the Oriental Region" and van der Wulp's 0' "Catalogue of the Described Diptera from South Asia" are completely out-" .. liL,:\, .; : '

. . . Brulletti's (1920) "Catalogue of Oricntal and Sout.l~ Asiatic Nc~l~ocera" was ,, plete and covered only one suborder. Checklists or enumerations of local 'Luna (such as Hennig 1941 for Formosa; Bezzi 1913, 1916 for the Philippines) are very limited in scope; and the only modem world catalog (Stone et al. 1959) that covers the Oriental region deals with the Culicidae alone. Comprehensive monographs such as the "Fauna of British India" series include several families but they are necessarily limited in scope, and the first volume is now over 50 years old. Thl~s , it is clear that no comprehensive catalog of' the Oriental Diptera has ever becn pub- lished, and there is an apparent need for an up-to-date guide to the literature. This work is therefore an at tempt to bring together for the first time as complete a comprehensive and systematic record as possible of the Oriental Diptera fauna. I t is being presented in three volumes: (I) Suborder Nematocera, (11) Suborder Brachycera, and (111) Suborder Cyclorrhapha.

The present volume treats the suborder Nematocera, which includes the mos- q u i t o ~ ~ , black flie~, rnidgeu, gnats, and related farms. Many of thest are blood- suckers and vectors of diseases of man and animals.

There are 382 valid genera and 6,226 valid species distributed among 23 families. In addition, 252 subgenera, 149 subspecies, and varieties are recognized. In all, this volume contains approximately 7,200 entries, including synonyms, errors, emendations, misidentifications, nomina nuda and nomina dubia. We believe

4 that all pertinent names proposed from 1758 through 1970 are included.

4 I t should be pointed out here that although we have made notable advances

i in dipterology, work on the Oriental fauna has not progressed as rapidly as in other ,:l zoogcographic areas. A grent deal r e ~ n a i ~ ~ s to be done ill this part of the tropics. We are hopeful that this summary of genera and species will stimulate more active

9 research on the Diptera fauria of the Oriental region.

Geographical Scope

No attempt will be made here to give detailed geographic enumeration of the vast

and complex area covered in this catalog. Simply, it is all of the "Oriental Region" as named and bounded by Wallace (1876), and islands east to Weber's Line (Scriv-

enor et al. 1943; Mayr 1944), as shown in the endsbeets. So far as the northern limits of the region are concerned, we have followed much more closely the original boundary. Thus, the area consists of Inclia, East ant1 West Pakistan, Ceylon, southern China to the limits of the Palaearctic region, the Philippines, Burma t o the Sunda Islands, Borneo, Celebes, and adjacent islands along Weber's Line. I t also includes the Ryukyu Islands, Hainan, Formosa, Maldive and Laccadive Islands, Andaman, and Nicobar Islands.

Genera l Informat ion

In prcsrnting this c;~tz~log wc havc: 11s(:c1 as gcridcs tI11: Nortlr Arncricarr I l i l~tcra

Catalog, and the Synoptic Catalog of the Mosquitoes of the World. Although the format follows much more closely tha t of the mosquito catalog, the arrangement and treatment of most subjects are essentially the samc as in the North American catalog. I t will therefore suffice here to indicate only the general features of this work.

The names of subfamilies, families, and tribes are arranged taxonomically; the genus- and species-group names are listed alphabetically. Valid names are printed in boldface type, and synonymous names are italicized for both genus- 2nd species-groups. Synonyms of species are indentcd and listed chronologically. Errors and emendations are given following the nalrle misspclletl or emended hut these are limited to those occurring in the area or those found frequently in

the Oriental literature. Only synonyms based on Oriental species are inclr~ded unless the names have comr into significant rrsagr in tbc: I i ~ ~ . r ; ~ ~ l r r r . N ; I I I ~ I : ~ 111,Imv the spccies level are listed as suhspecies or varieties, and are arranged in alpha- betical order. Nomina nuda are listed in synonymy if the application is known, or a t the end of each family if not known. Nominn rlrrhin are placed scp;~r:~tely a t the cnd of rach family. Both namcs are in italic type. Names of uncertain generic position are placed separately a t the end of the applicable tribe, subfamily

or family, or if of uncertain subgencric position, a t the cnd of the genus. If thc identity of the species remains unknown, or obviously new species are undescribed, these are included under the appropriate genus as "unnamed sp." or "ssp." In cases where extralimital names arc being wrongly applied Sor Oriental species, they are simply listed in alphabetical order followed by the notation "Not Oriental." I f a name has been misapplied t o only one Oriental species, it is then listed in the

synonymy of that species, thus: "sallens, authors, not Doleschall." Apart from those cited in the introductory remarks for each family, important references in the text under the subfamily- or genus-groups have been limited. Information on type specimens and depositories is not included.

For names, the Naiional Geographic Magazine Maps o j Sotrihensi Asiu (1961), Souihwesi Asicr (1963), irncl Clrina (1964.) arc 11sc:d lrcrc as s t a r~~ l a rd references.

The ahbreviations of the names of periodicals follow tl~osr. of the World 1,ist o j Scienlijic Periot1icnl.s Publislierl in ihe Years 1900-1960, 4th r(li/iort (Brolort

and Stralion, editors, 1963-1965). For other publications not included there we

have attempted to follow as closely as possible the same system. Type-locality data as far as possible are as cited in the original description,

although certain common place names have been given in the spellings which appear in the National Geographic maps. Additional geographic information is enclosed in brackets if province or state, in parentheses if alternate names. Where

older, amhigr~or~s type-localities are difficr~lt to trace, thrse are givrn in q~rotirtion marks. Inf;eq~re~ltly, WC have made sl igl~t modifications of tile original type- locality data.

Distribution is given for each valid species only by country, island, or island groups in alphabetical order; outlying islands are treated as separate units apart from the mainland. For example: Nias or Simeulue off the west coast of Sumatra, and Anambas Islands, 200 miles nortl~east of Singapore ill the China SCR, a d ~ ~ ~ i n i s - tratively belong to Sumatra but we have listed them separately in the general c l i s t r i b~~ t io~~ . For India and China, we have selected to inclcrdc the chirf political divisions, e.g. Irrovi~~ccs or states arc c~~closed in brackcts. lt~cluded in the India11

provinces are Assam, which is an extension of India, and Sikkim in the eastern Ilimalayas. Similarly, the Philippine Isla~~tls , if known, are enclosed in brackets. in a north to south order. Where "China" alone appears in the distribrrtion, i t is presumed tha t it refers to southern China. If the province(s) or island(s) are

givcn in the type localities of the valid and synonymorls species, thrsc arc not repeated in the gencral distribution data. For crample:

urdhvakantaka Schmid. -India [Sikkim]. 1970, Naturaliste can. 97:508 (6' 9). Type-loc: Bara Hata, [W Bengal]

Generu and Subgenera: Exccpt for errors and c ~ r ~ e ~ ~ d a t i o ~ ~ s . each gen~ls-groul~ name is followed by author, date. original reference only, volume, page (rarely plate or ligr~rc), typc-species, and nature of type fixntiou. For the typc-species, the original combination is cited, the generic name omitted if it is the same as that " of the present genus. If the type-species is now a synonym, the present valid

name is given. Citations for the typical subgenus follow the generic rather than the subgeneric heading. For type designation of the genus-group, the rules as

required by the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature have been strictly applied. If a type-species is misidentificd we have givcn thc originally included nominal species t ha t was named as type, the type fixation followed by "misiden.

principally by the elongate coxae, lack of the discal cell, and thc usual prcsencr of ocelli, tibial spurs, and a distinct constriction at t11c haw of the. a1)dolnt.n. Most larvae show some degree of association with fungi, often living in or on the frniting bodies. Some feed on spores or hyphae, but others are predators or, possibly, saprophytes. Many, particularly in the Keroplatinac, spin mucus webs within which they live. The adults are mostly erep~lscular or nocturnal, resting by day in moist, sheltered sites, particularly among forest undergrowth. Thev are com- monly taken by sweeping o r in light- or Malaise-traps.

We are here following the classification used by Laffoon (1965), based on that of Edwards (1925), although it is already clear tha t some substantial changes will eventually be needed. Some European workers are already recognising some or all of Edwards' s ~ ~ b f a m i l i r s as families, b u t b e see littlr j~~st i f icat ion for this a t present.

The Oriental f'a~lna seems rather poorl>- studied; 72 per cent of t l ~ c 185 species arc known from the type loc;~lity nnly, and niany morg' I I ) I I R ~ i l \ v ; ~ i t eIisco\~(~ry. lIo\v- ever. its general s t ructure secnls fairly claar. Ditomyiinae, Bolitol)l~ilir~a(. and Diadocidiinae are apparently absent (though a t least the latter seems likely to be found eventually). As in the Australian region, the dominant genera of thc tropical lowlands are Orfelin, Epicypla, Leia, Ex~chicr, and to a lesser extent Neocmpheric~, while in the cooler highlands a variety of tempcrate genera appear, with Macroe~rn and Mycornya, well representecl.
