Pope Francis’ Prayer to Our Lady

O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope.

We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus' pain, keeping your faith firm.

You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee,

we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father

and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross,

to the joy of the resurrection. Amen.

Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of we who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 3, 2020

THE VISITATION COLLABORATIVE

Mary, Mother of God, intercede for us your chil-dren. May, we, who have been baptized into your Son’s life, by your intercession, live the joyful life of Jesus. May all our thoughts begin with God, may all of our words point others to God, may all our actions help to bring others in union with God. Amen.

During May, the Church once again dedicates the month to Our Blessed Mother. There are so many intentions that arise in our lives each day and we can be sure that she will help to bring them to her Son, our Lord, Jesus. Of course we readily think of all those who have been affected by COVID-19: those who have passed away, those who have lost a loved one, those who are sick, those who have lost work, those who are struggling to provide for their family. In the same moment, we are offering our prayers of thanksgiving to God that through the blessings we have received, we might be bearers of the Good News. Families that have begun to pray together, dis-ciples who are now praying the rosary, mothers who are carrying a child anew, communication with peo-ple who have been distant from one another, the gen-erosity of parishioners to the needs of the collabora-tive, followers of Christ who have found new life in the Sacrament of Confession, three new members who have entered into the Church this Easter Season, the health we do have, the material needs that we have…the many prayers of thanksgiving we have to God through Mary.

I have had several meetings over the past week to get updates on where the Church is and what we need to attend to as we move forward. There is no date for when we can resume public Masses with a large gathering. When we do start again, it will begin with 50 people per Mass and there will be social distanc-ing measures in place.

I have learned about several parishes in the Archdio-cese that have been in collaboration and are now be-coming one parish. Members of the finance councils,

staff, and pastoral council were part of a presentation this week open to all parishes in the archdiocese in which several people spoke about how this is hap-pening across the archdiocese. Lynnfield, Quincy, Lynn, Mattapan (St. Angela Merici) and Dorchester (St. Matthew) are a few of the places where this is happening. I am told that there are many others. The council members and I will continue to discuss and inquire about this development that is happening in the archdiocese.

Thank you to all who have been continuing to sup-port the financial needs of our collaborative. Your commitment is one of the blessings for which I give thanks to God daily. I am encouraged by your sup-port of the Church’s mission.

Lastly, We need your help to support Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Boston. This past week I posted this on Facebook, but I also want to draw your attention to this in print. This is a copy of the Cardinal’s letter to all of us. I have included the link below to sign the petition: Dear Catholic School Friends, The Catholic school family – teachers, staff and school leaders – have worked tirelessly together to ensure a quality education continues to be provided to your children and all who attend Catholic schools. Now, we need your help! The COVID-19 pandemic has had a very large financial impact on the economy, unem-ployment and our schools. The White House and the U.S. Congress passed a relief bill called the CARES Act that seeks to provide help to all schools, including Catholic schools. Governor Baker now has to make a decision on how this money is allocated, and to make sure Catholic schools get the relief we need. We ask you to take less than 2 minutes to click on the link be-low and sign a petition that will help make sure Catho-lic schools get our fair share of funding.

An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You

are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things,

and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated

from You. Amen.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 3, 2020

THE VISITATION COLLABORATIVE

Prayerful Participation in an Online Mass by Carolyn Pirtle (Via https://mcgrathblog.nd.edu/prayerful-participation-in-an-online-mass)

1. Dress up. When I go to Mass at my parish, I usually try to dress at least as nicely as I do for work. Working from home this past week, my professional wardrobe has gotten, shall we say, a bit of a break. But I plan to dress up for Mass this Sunday, because it will help me make the mental shift from just hanging around my house to entering into the Eucharistic cele-bration. If dressing up for Mass isn’t a usual practice for you at all, give it a try. The way we dress has more of an im-pact on the way we act than we realize. Perhaps it impacts the way we pray as well. 2. Prepare beforehand. If you plan to live-stream Mass this Sunday, “arrive” five minutes early. Not only will this allow you to ensure that your technology is working properly, but more importantly, it will give you a few minutes to prepare your heart. Be-fore Mass begins, think about what you’re about to participate in. Make an intentional offering of the fact that you’re not able to participate as you normally would, and perhaps do so in solidarity with those who were already unable to attend Mass—the elderly, the sick, the homebound. 3. Light a candle or two. There’s something remarkable about the act of lighting a candle, especially when one strikes a match to do so, as op-posed to using a lighter. It’s so simple, but it’s so intentional, so careful. And then there’s the candle itself, with its gentle, flickering, living light. Not only can lighting a candle be a beautiful reminder of the light of Christ received at Baptism (or, for catechumens, the light of Christ they wait to receive), but it also parallels the lighting of candles that takes place before every Mass, allowing us to enter into the celebration in a more concrete, incarnational way. 4. Pray the responses aloud and perform the liturgical gestures reverently. This may seem a little strange, but then again, the Mass isn’t a spectator sport. Whether we experience it in person or through the mediation of the Internet, the Mass invites—insists upon—our participation, interiorly and exteriorly. Inte-rior participation is how we join our hearts to what we hear, say, and do; exterior participation manifests our interior attitude. Gestures like the Sign of the Cross and blessing our heads, lips, and heart at the Gospel allow us to literally embody our thoughts and words, and everything works together to deepen our participation in the liturgy. 5. Pray using the prescribed postures. Posture takes the embodiment of gesture one step farther. Sitting is a posture of receptivity; it encourages us to hear and receive the Word of God. Standing is a posture of affirmation, of solidarity. When you stand with or for something or someone, you identify yourself with that cause or person. When we stand for the Gospel, we are in a sense identify-ing ourselves with Christ, listening to his words intently so that we might be conformed to him more fully. Finally, kneeling is a posture of humility and reverence. It opens us up to receiving the graces being offered to us in the Eucha-rist. Even when we’re not physically able to receive the Body and Blood of Christ, we can still make an Act of Spiritu-al Communion, humbly asking Jesus to come and dwell in our hearts. 6. Sing along! No seriously. Sing out loud. Singing is very different from speaking. When you sing, you have to conform your breath to the demands of the music—inhaling when appropriate (e.g., not in the middle of a word), and exhaling in a sus-tained way to sing the musical line properly. Singing entails a kind of dying to self: you can’t sing the music any old way you want to. (I mean, you can, but it won’t be beautiful. And other people will be annoyed with you.) If singing makes you uncomfortable, just look at it as one more beautiful sacrifice you can make for our Lord, who delights in your voice no matter what. 7. Coordinate with family or friends and watch the same Mass. I live alone, far away from my family and my closest friends. And even though I’m a textbook introvert, isolation has been tough. So I’ve become all the more intentional about checking in with the people I love. Recently, my best friend from college invited me to participate in her family’s nightly Rosary via FaceTime. It was sheer gift, and we’re plan-ning to make this a regular practice, even after the time of isolation ends. Whether you live alone or not, consider reaching out to family or friends and deciding together which Mass you’ll live-stream. This will provide a sense of solace, solidarity, and community, and afterward, you can chat together about the readings or engage in discussion around the proper texts you just prayed.

St. Mary of the Hills Perpetual Candle

Light a candle in memory/honor of someone or for a particular intention. They are a great way of inviting others to pray for your intention and to let others know that they are being prayed for here at St. Mary of the Hills. Another way to use these candles is to have one lit in honor of a recently deceased family member or friend instead of sending flowers. The parish would send out a card letting the family know that their loved one is being re-membered with our candle here at the church.

St. Mary of the Hills Perpetual Candles In memory of: Ellen Carlson and Angel Langlais For healing: Jim Kackley and Benicio Gobourne In honor of: Gloria Finnegan, The Ciampa Family Please remember them in your prayers. To memorialize or honor your own loved ones, there are forms at the candle stand or contact us in the office. Thank you.

4th Sunday of Easter Many people in our lives encourage us to be pre-pared for the future. The doctor, banker, insur-ance agent, priest, and family all remind us to plan ahead, focusing on our goals of retirement, estate planning and health needs. It’s a smart idea to have your will and advanced directives fin-ished long before you may need them. The spiritual life needs some advance planning too. If we say that we want to follow the Lord, how will we do that? Specifically, what will be different in our lives because we believe? Will our family notice, or our co-workers, or our friends? If faith is life changing, making us better people, what actually changes? What about our families? If we are indeed a community of faith, do we pray together, practice virtue and act like the believers we are? Spiritual planning means we take a look at where we are and choose to act on one thing we can change, one thing that will make us more aware of our baptismal calling to follow Jesus. To get on the right path, carry a small cross in your pocket, attend Mass during the week, or pray the rosary with your family. It takes just a few minutes to remind us of God’ Presence and choose to answer His call.
