For some, a career choice mightappear to be an easy decision whena family business is there to be passeddown through the generations. Dr.Cohen indeed once planned to workfor the family business, but at the ageof sixteen, a dramatic experiencechanged his vision for his future.

In a cold, matter-of-fact manner, adoctor had explained to the family

that its head, Dr. Cohen’s father,had only a few months to live.

Not accepting that prognosis, a second doctor was found,one who gave the family hope.It was that doctor who inspiredDr. Cohen, already a student of

the sciences with a great love for biology, to decide to attend

medical school.

“I knew then I wanted to be someonewho could inspire hope in others,” Dr.Cohen recalls, “and to help people ina way that only a physician could.That experience with my father, whois doing quite well by the way, taughtme that the practice of medicine is somuch more than knowledge and skill;being compassionate about people isimportant too.”

It was during time spent working withchildren while in medical school thatDr. Cohen became fascinated with

ophthalmology. “I spent a day look-ing into children’s eyes, and learnedthat with one surgery you couldchange the way they see their worldfor the rest of their lives,” he explains.“Even today I love interacting with mypatients after surgery because I wantto see the impact of the procedureon someone who just yesterdaymight have been legally blind.” Dr.Cohen routinely attends to the fol-low-up care of his patients to makesure they receive the outcome he intended.

“I want more than functional

improvement for my patients;

I want their eyes to achieve the

most natural anatomical

characteristic possible.”

Dr. Cohen not only enjoys witnessingthe immediate results of eye surgery,but he thrives on the innovative na-ture of the field of ophthalmologytoo. “Our specialty is a rapidly chang-ing one, practically reinventing itselfevery five years. I do everything I canto stay abreast of new surgical tech-niques and technologies that willmake me a better surgeon.”
