He started to talk to specialists about the possibility of a lung transplant. At first the notion seemed so impossible as it was going to be a tough road but he was determined. First he had to seek treatment to help eradicate some of the complications that he was facing. 2SUMMER/FALL 2013

I am honored to be addressing you, for the first time, as the new President and CEO of The Good Samaritan Society (GSS). I have shared with the many staff, volunteers, colleagues and vendors that I have spoken with, that I came to The Good Samaritan Society because I have always believed that we are an organization with a soul. This has been evidenced over and over as I visited all our programs and sites in my first three months on the job.

By the time of publishing this message, I will have been to all programs and sites operated by GSS. You would think that the travel and meetings would be exhausting, but just the opposite is true. When I completed my visits, I felt extremely energized and optimistic about our future. Upon reflection, I determined that it was because of meeting all the caring staff and being privileged to give them a CEO pin recognizing our meeting and the start of our new working relationship. It is my hope that all staff I have met, and those that I have not had the pleasure of meeting yet, will act as a CEO in making the vision of the pin campaign a reality to ensure that we all contribute to ensuring that “A

Healthy Workplace is an Extension of Excellence” here at GSS.

I interacted with so many dedicated, committed and loving staff members. I can truly say that the mission, vision and values of GSS are being lived on a daily basis and I would have no hesitation in placing any one of my loved ones in any of our facilities.

It is clear that I have been blessed with the support of a strong team of Board members and Executive Management to help me in leading this remarkable Society.

Without question, we are facing challenging times as an organization and have to adjust and be nimble to operational realities moving forward. Next year, GSS will celebrate its 65th anniversary with Gottlieb Wedman’s original vision intact and at the foundation of our activities. As we celebrate this tremendous milestone

and reflect on our rich history, I look forward with your help, to build the foundation of a new and refocused Society ensuring that we are here for the next 65 years to provide the quality services that have become expected of GSS.

Additionally, I look forward to serving you and GSS by ensuring that we are an efficient and effective organization; ensuring that we develop an inspired future of providing housing and care to those in need.

Thank you for entrusting the leadership of this great organization to me, and I ask humbly for your help and support as we travel together on a journey of growing in strength, excellence and creativity.

Best regards,

i ask humbly for your help and

Ruth moved into Good Samaritan Good Shepherd Home in September 2012 from her home in Wetaskiwin. Ruth loves life. She loves her family, her friends, all the activities she participates in, the food, the caring staff and…her bed. You see when she moved in, she was fortunate enough to have a new electric bed in her room.

Gary moved into the same place but did not have a new bed and brought his from home. It was not that comfortable and he could not transfer from his wheelchair onto his bed on his own. He requested a new

bed and was told it would likely be four or five months, however, thanks to generous donations to the Buy a Bed Campaign for Good Samaritan Good Shepherd, Gary was able to receive a new bed within two weeks! He couldn’t be happier. He is much more independent now and can come and go as he pleases. He loves all the features of his new bed from it going up and down, tilting and elevating his leg. He is absolutely thrilled.

So far we have purchased 23 of the 64 beds we need. Thank you to all the donors that have contributed. We still

have a ways to go, and both Ruth and Gary thank you for your generosity. For more information on the Buy a Bed Campaign, please contact Pam at 780-352-3628.

The Good Samaritan Good Shepherd Home in Wetaskiwin is currently raising funds towards their $175,000 campaign to purchase new beds for their residents. In support of these fundraising efforts, staff and volunteers organized a Spring Fling in June featuring entertainment and activities for everyone who attended.

Set up on the lawn area alongside the site, tents helped promote the event in the community. The day featured a barbecue sponsored by Conoco Phillips, pie throwing at select staff members, glitter tattoos, a silent auction, raffles, an ice cream

table and lots of entertainment for more than 300 residents, their families, friends and guests from the community.

The event was made possible by the support and sponsorship of several key businesses including Conoco Phillips, Home Hardware in Wetaskiwin, Baker Funeral Chapel and the Wetaskiwin Credit Union.

Proceeds from the day’s activities along with sponsorships and donations raised over $15,000 towards the bed campaign! Along with the sponsors, the staff, volunteers and families worked hard to make this fundraiser a huge success. Residents will benefit by sleeping in a comfortable bed!

This past June, Good Samaritan Mountain View Centre in Hinton held a lovely event profiling the work of their residents while raising funds for needed equipment. Their Resident Art Show and Auction was combined with a block party thanks to support from The Town of Hinton. The Town also supplied the residents and guests with snacks for the event.

The evening started with entertainment by local Ukrainian dancers. After their performance, the unveiling of the art and an introduction of all the artists that were involved in producing the auction items took place. During this time music was provided by a local group who played while guests viewed the art and auction, and enjoyed refreshments and fellowship.

What was truly unique about this fundraising event is that all of the art showcased and available in the silent auction was painted by residents of the site. In addition, there were several local artists who donated their

work to the cause. The auction itself was open for 2 weeks after the show for ongoing bids. All the residents attended the event along with family members.

After 2 weeks of bidding, over $700 was raised in the silent auction. Residents were thrilled at the interest in their work! It was a fun

In June of this year, Good Samaritan Village by the Station in Penticton received a very unexpected and exciting visit. The son of a former resident at the site, Mr. Eric Harry and his wife Yvonne stopped by to share the news that Eric had recently been elected Provincial President of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Eric informed them that with the honour of being the President of the Order comes the opportunity to select a charity of choice for his term and he chose Good Samaritan Village by the Station! Needless to say, Bev Freeman, Site Manager and her staff were thrilled!

With a motto of “people helping people”, the Fraternal Order of Eagles is an international non-profit organization formed in 1898 in the USA. They currently have over 1 million members and more than 1,500 local aeries (chapters) in the US and Canada. In British Columbia they have over 4,000 members with another 2,200 members of the auxiliary. Their accomplishments are significant as their altruistic work has supported countless charities and projects over the decades.

A very interesting piece of their history is that Mother’s Day was founded by this organization!

As Eric Harry shared, he selected Good Samaritan Village by the Station as his designated charity for the year as he believes this is a unique community offering seniors multiple levels of support and the opportunity to age in place. He is hopeful that by the end of his term next spring, the

various fundraising efforts will raise enough money to purchase a new bladder scanner for the site.

The Good Samaritan Society and particularly the residents and staff of Good Samaritan Village by the Station in Penticton are honoured to be recognized in this way and look forward to our partnership with Eric Harry and the Fraternal Order of Eagles!

PeDAL POwer!

Good Samaritan sites across Alberta and British Columbia take on fundraising efforts to provide much needed equipment and activities for our residents. This spring, the residents of Good Samaritan Pioneer Lodge in Salmon Arm, BC celebrated the purchase of new equipment for occupational and rehabilitation therapy.

The Rehab Trainer equipment provides residents the opportunity to do mobility exercises for the legs and arms, similar to riding a bike – just stationary. The new equipment was welcomed to the site with a demonstration by Pat Manziuk for the residents to learn how to use the machines. A few of them quickly wanted to try them out which led to big smiles and some heavy breathing,

but they welcomed the opportunity to have this exercise equipment in their home.

This equipment was purchased entirely by donation dollars for which the residents of Good Samaritan Pioneer Lodge are so grateful and is another example of how donation dollars are put to good use at Good Samaritan sites!

8WINTER 2013

On Thursday, June 13, 2013 The Good Samaritan Society along with our title sponsor Servus Credit Union, held the 21st Annual Spirit of Caring Golf Tournament. Our prayers were answered when the rain stopped, clouds began to clear and the sun shone at The Links in Spruce Grove! All proceeds from this event have gone to support Good Samaritan Southgate Care Centre and their project to create welcoming beverage and nourishment centres for our residents and families to enjoy.

172 golfers gathered for a day of fellowship, fun and fabulous food. Along with an incredible live and silent auction, we are thrilled to announce that with your help, we have managed to raise a record total of $87,000! We are filled with gratitude and appreciation for the support of the golfers, sponsors and volunteers.

During our banquet, a special tribute was made to the Christenson

family and Christenson Developments for their ongoing support of The Good Samaritan Society and for their commitment to help us provide quality care for seniors in our community. For over 20 years Lloyd Christenson was involved at the Board level and with projects such as the golf tournament. Joyce Christenson continues to be involved as a donor and supporter of our mission and we are proud that Christenson Developments has been a sponsor of

the Spirit of Caring Golf Tournament for 15 years.

A heartfelt thank you to the tireless volunteer committee. Without their dedication and commitment, this event would not have been so successful.

We look forward to seeing our returning golfers and hopefully some new faces on the course June 12, 2014! Thank you again for sharing your ‘Spirit of Caring’ with us!

On Saturday, March 2, 2013, a new stained glass window was commissioned at Good Samaritan Stony Plain Care Centre. Celebrated with many donors in attendance, the window is a much appreciated addition to this rebuilt site. The commissioning was lead by the site Chaplain, Karen Triomphe with several staff members and volunteers participating.

The event was also a thank you to the donors who supported the purchase and installation of the stained glass window, including our lead donors Eileen Baron and the St. Andrew’s Thrift Shop. Eileen has been a volunteer and auxiliary member for Good Samaritan Stony Plain Care Centre for over 40 years,

continuing in the footsteps of her father who was also a dedicated supporter of our Society. The site was able to receive the window much quicker than expected due in large part to Eileen. At the official opening of the site, Eileen had asked about the window and upon learning we needed to raise funds to make this happen, she offered a major donation for the stained glass. Her own faith and desire to see the residents and staff at Good Samaritan Stony Plain Care Centre enjoy the window in the chapel area is a gift to everyone at the site. March 2nd was also Eileen’s birthday, which we were honoured to celebrate with her!

St. Andrew’s Thrift Shop has been a long time supporter of The Society, providing grants to our three sites in Parkland County – Good Samaritan Stony Plain Care Centre, Good Samaritan George Hennig Place and Good Samaritan Spruce Grove Centre. We were delighted when they approved our request for support to help with the window purchase and installation, helping us reach our goal for the window and chapel furnishings.

The residents, families and staff are now enjoying this beautiful addition to Good Samaritan Stony Plain Care Centre with much gratitude to our donors!

11SUMMER/FALL 2013

Nearly two years ago, GSS conducted a review of our Pastoral Care Program. The review clearly indicated that changes were needed to meet the expanded needs of residents and to ensure sustainability of this valued service. These changes were incorporated into a new model, moving from a parish model to a blended model that incorporates both parish and clinical components. At this time we refer to this paradigm as the Pastoral-Spiritual Care Model.

We define the Pastoral-Spiritual Care Model as a program that provides for the spiritual and religious wellbeing of residents, families and staff. Through both internal and external stakeholders, the diverse faith traditions and journeys of all are welcomed and respected.

There are three key principles to the new model:

• Partnership Approach: This acknowledges that pastoral-spiritual care does not rely solely on the chaplain. Instead, it recognizes that spiritual care is a shared endeavor between various internal and external communities and individuals.

• Shared Responsibilities: The blended model recognizes that there are additional community

resources that can be drawn upon to provide activities such as hymn sing, worship services, bible studies, etc. For these activities, the chaplain is a facilitator thus freeing the chaplain to become part of the care team and to provide specialized clinical spiritual care.

• Welcoming Diversity: Residents come from diverse backgrounds, which may or may not include religion or spirituality. As GSS believes in a holistic model of care, it is important to honor residents’ religious or spiritual traditions.

What does this look like in real time? The chaplain now has two major roles: spiritual care facilitator and spiritual care provider. As facilitator they work to connect residents to their own spiritual leaders and invite churches to be part of the religious community by actively taking a part in the spiritual life of the people.

Good Samaritan Good Shepherd Home in Wetaskiwin has no onsite chaplain but does have a strong pastoral care program. Greg Broadbent the Recreation/Volunteer Coordinator offers details of the program:

“Our pastoral care activities are flourishing as staff, volunteers, residents and the local community churches

have stepped forward in providing uplifting spiritual activities for the residents here at Good Samaritan Good Shepherd Home. We have numerous spiritual activities throughout the month provided by various faith groups that include church services, bible studies and hymn sing. Our staff and residents also facilitate spiritual activities. They have established and host a Wednesday morning bible study following The Good Samaritan Bible Study Guide, morning reflections, which include prayers and biblical readings before breakfast each day, and a prayer for grace and thanksgiving before each meal. Our Good Shepherd family has endeavored to provide everyone in our little community with rewarding and interactive opportunities to explore their spirituality.”

The chaplains have begun to incorporate Pastoral Care Visitor Teams, comprised of people who have taken the Volunteer Pastoral Care Visitor Workshop offered by The Good Samaritan Society. This intensive training has garnered people from all denominations.

“It has been my privilege to volunteer with GSS at Heron Grove in Vernon, BC for the last year. My experience included sitting with palliative and hospitalized residents, as well as visiting with residents of varying physical and cognitive capacities.

As a nurse, I well know that in the current overburdened health care system, an individual’s spiritual needs are too often overlooked – as are the spiritual needs of the caregivers who struggle to give compassionate care within that system. It has been gratifying to participate in the innovative approach to spiritual care that has been adopted by GSS. I learned much from workshops, meetings with chaplains, and some of the recommended reading. The information will assist me not only in a volunteer capacity, but in my ongoing practice of nursing – whatever the setting.

Thank you for this wonderful opportunity to serve and to learn.”

Pat Hodgins RN BN (Volunteer Pastoral Care Visitor)

One of the most exciting initiatives has been the training of GSS staff regarding spirituality. As a faith-based organization, we believe strongly that spirituality is an important part of holistic care of residents. Spiritual concerns may happen at any hour. Recognizing this fact, our goal is to equip staff to recognize spiritual distress when it occurs and to intervene as necessary or to make a successful referral. In order to educate staff, two training modules have been created and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

“This has been an amazing experience for me, because it has allowed me to see the passion for spirituality captured in the hearts and the eyes of those gathered in the room.”

Chaplain Robert Marshall

“I have worked with GSS for 24 years, and have always been proud of our Christian roots. This year’s Introduction to Spirituality module helps us to reconnect with these roots. Our

Christian hospitality is what makes us unique; and is an integral part of our Model of Care. I am looking forward with excitement of what the next installment will bring.”

Darcy Shenfield, Educator

In the role of Spiritual Care Provider, the chaplain will place stronger emphasis on developing spirituality programming, provide more in depth religious care, be more active on the care team, offer more expertise on end of life spiritual care and provide leadership in ethics.

In order to understand the unique spiritual needs of residents at the different facilities and programs, Spiritual Needs Assessments are being carried out. Programs will then be developed to specifically meet these spiritual needs.

An example of spirituality programming taking place can be seen through the work of Rev. Ray Niebergall, chaplain at Good Samaritan Christenson Village, in Gibsons, BC. Ray notes that he provides “…opportunities to express meaning, purpose, connectedness to self, to others, to nature, and to the sacred.” Programs such as Full Circle, Meditation Group, Chapel, Friends and Family Support Group, and Living Well, Dying Well are happening at Good Samaritan Christenson Village.

Living Well, Dying Well is a program to provide opportunity for residents to enter discussion around the theme of endings. In the fall, Ray will begin a program called Spirit of Clay. Using clay as a medium they will touch the basis of their humanity and spirituality.

In order to move into this expanded role some of the chaplains are taking additional training so that they can acquire the necessary competencies and can develop best practices. Chaplains will take on a stronger leadership role in integrating ethics into the care that is provided at their site. With increasingly complex issues arising in care, the need for discernment around care decision- making is becoming more important.

End of life spiritual care has always been of prime importance at GSS. The new model of pastoral-spiritual care provides clearer direction on how we might ensure that the spiritual needs of dying residents and clients are met.

Change is always a challenge. Moving from a model that has been in place for 65 years to a more integrated model takes time but the goal has always been to offer our residents and clients the best pastoral-spiritual care possible. Putting this new model in place serves to make this a more complete reality.

A MAGICAL MOrNING

Saturday mornings at Good Samaritan Village by the Station in Penticton are normally peaceful and quiet but Saturday, August 31 was different. Some special guests dropped by to say hello - none other than Lord Stanley.

Yes, the Stanley Cup, Canada’s most coveted piece of silverware and perhaps the most prestigious sports trophy in all of the world, chose to spend precious time with residents and staff. It was an exclusive private showing! Lord Stanley was accompanied by Penticton-raised

Chicago Blackhawk star Duncan Keith - one of our country’s finest athletes and one of the world’s finest hockey players.

The building was alive with cameras, security people, Duncan Keith and the beloved Stanley Cup! The room exploded and burst with excitement. Duncan thanked residents for having him as a guest in their home and then invited everyone to view, touch and have their photo taken with the Cup. He also signed autographs for the people in the room.

The next hour was sheer joy and excitement as people came forward doing something many in our great country only dream of. Good Samaritan Village by the Station had a once in a lifetime experience with its own showing with the Holy Grail of all hockey and Canada’s treasure.

It was a magical morning and a special thank you goes out to our star volunteer, Ivan McLelland, in helping make dreams come true.

Grief and the Quest for Meaning:The Spiritual Arc of Tragic Loss8:00 am — 4:30 pm

Friday, October 25, 2013St. Charles Garnier Parish3645 Benvoulin RoadKelowna, British Columbia

The loss of a loved one, particularly in its most tragic forms, profoundly challenges the thematic foundations that give meaning to the stories of our lives. In this workshop we will trace one possible narrative arc through traumatic bereavement, beginning with the shattering of our self narratives as survivors, through our efforts at retelling the narrative of the loss in some restorative fashion, reconstructing its meaning for our ongoing lives, integrating its broader spiritual or cosmic significance, and extending the story of our loved one’s existence in life-affirming ways. In doing so we will review novel research findings on the role of meaning and spirituality in adapting to difficult losses, whether these arise from natural death or from violent causes such as homicide, suicide or fatal accident. Building on these findings, we will focus strongly on the practice implications of a narrative approach to meaning reconstruction in the wake of loss, and learn how to (1) distinguish between complicated and adaptive grief, (2) practice procedures for restorative retelling

of traumatic loss, (3) offer evidence based guidelines for therapeutic journaling, and (4) use metaphoric and literal storytelling to access and work with themes in a client’s own grief experiences. Throughout, we will illustrate points in the arc with reference to actual case studies of traumatic bereavement, and describe the conditions that help and hinder clients striving to move from grief to growth in the wake of difficult loss.

Dr. Robert A. Neimeyer, Ph.D.

Robert A. Neimeyer, Ph.D., is a Professor of Psychology, University of Memphis, where he also maintains an active clinical practice. Neimeyer has published 25 books, including Grief and Bereavement in Contemporary Society: Bridging Research and Practice, and serves as Editor of the journal Death Studies. The author of nearly 400 articles and book chapters, he is currently working to advance a more adequate theory of grieving as a meaning-making process, both in his published work and through his frequent professional workshops for national and international audiences.
