Calculation methods

• Composite Indicator Methods✓ Vulnerability = the sum of Social Vulnerability, Economic Vulnerability, … ✓ Vulnerability = sum of Exposure + Sensitity – Adaptive Capacity

• Methods to apply weights✓ Equal weights

- Complex theoretical structure of the indicators- Large amount of indicators

✓ Statistical approach (Principal Component Analysis, Correlation Analysis,,… )

- Less based on logical meaning- objective

✓ Expert Judgment (Analytical Hierarchy Process,…)

- Subjective- Searching for realistic contributions of the different aspects

Improved climate services for risk management : African and LAC flood and drought Monitors

User Interface: http://stream.princeton.edu

Designed to strengthen the capacity of African and LAC countries for near real-time monitoring and seasonal forecasting to raise awareness of the impact of floods and droughts on vulnerable and disadvantaged groups.

System was deployed in

• LAC • West Africa• East Africa• Southern Africa• Currently been adapted for Lake

Chad Basin with higher spatial resolution

Drought Vulnerability Atlas

It is these antecedents that have led to the need to generate a special UNESCO publication to address the issue of drought in this region of America. This is: The Drought Atlas of Latin America and the Caribbean

Climate Risk Informed Decision Analysis (CRIDA)

CRIDA moves away from the ‘one size fits all’ approach, since adaptation to climate stress is a local process that requires the design of tailored solutions. In this way, CRIDA helps the water resources planner to navigate through an uncertain world toward imperfect but robust and socially acceptable solutions in line with local needs.
