When we were teenagers, we would visit Rodman Public Library in our

hometown of Alliance, Ohio and look at The Readers’ Guide to Periodical

Literature, which listed citations of articles in Life, Look, Newsweek, Time, and

other magazines.

In the Readers’ Guide, we could see the title of an article, if an author was

credited, what publication it was in, what the date and volume of the issue was,

what page number the article was on or started on, and if there were portrait(s)

or illustration(s) or a bibliography or notes about the bandleaders.

Chris, especially, would go to the table where the indexes were kept, sit on a

little wooden stool, and be endlessly fascinated, just reading the titles of the

articles shown in each volume, about so many different topics.

Some of our early research interests, namely Tex Beneke, Cab Calloway, Jerry

Gray, Ray McKinley, Glenn Miller, and Artie Shaw, were rarely mentioned in

the general press during the period 1949 into the 1970s. (Beneke, Calloway, and

McKinley not at all!)

But for those moments when Calloway, Miller, or Shaw (or other bands) were,

Chris would request on a little call slip for the Librarian to retrieve the

periodicals that Rodman subscribed to. If desired, he could make a photocopy of

the article, depending on whether he any money to do so.

The Readers’ Guide to Periodical Literature served not only as an

introduction to some of what had been published about the bands, but for Chris

the beginning of an appreciation of the writings of George T. Simon, Leonard

Feather, and others.

For our website, we have extended this bibliography through 1999, to make it

an even 50-year period.

Also during the early to mid-’70s, while attending classes at Bowling Green

State University in Bowling Green, Ohio, Jay would consult a similar but even

more rewarding source, The Music Index, and copy down citations of articles

from Down Beat, Metronome, Billboard, Variety, and other magazines held at

the campus library.

By the way, we still have the papers on which we laboriously wrote down in

pencil these citations.

What follows next is many pages of a bibliography of Tex Beneke, Cab

Calloway, Jerry Gray, Ray McKinley, Glenn Miller, and Artie Shaw from The

Music Index, covering from 1949 through 1999.

All of this information shows some of what we were reading starting in the

1970s. If you are just now learning about the big bands yourself, you can follow

along with press coverage of the leaders’ careers or lives, including Beneke split-

ting with the Glenn Miller Estate, Calloway moving his talents onto the theatre

stage, the building of Gray’s band, McKinley re-forming a Glenn Miller Orches-

tra, the continuing interest in Miller’s music, and Shaw zig-zagging in pursuit of

his many interests.
