NEWSLETTER
10 AUGUST 2017
A belated Happy Women’s Day to all our wonderful Hilton Harrier ladies…we hope you had a relaxing day yesterday.
If you or your business can provide any sponsorship for the 2018 Ronnie Davel, please get in touch with Paul Laing. It will be the 40th running of the Ronnie Davel and we would like to make it special so any financial assistance would be greatly appreciated.
The longest day took place last Saturday. It was the first time the event
included a relay format. The relay teams were made up of three people and the
minimum amount of mileage per team was 80 km in total, although teams were
allowed to continue on until the 12 hour cut off to see how far they could get.
The only rule was that there was to be one team member on the track at one
time, how you split the distance up was up to you! Hilton Harriers had six
teams entered and an internal competition to see who could get to 80 km first.
It was an incredibly fun day and the camaraderie was awesome. Thank you to
everyone who helped out by providing food and drink, setting up the tent etc.

Briget Laughed (Peter Hobden, Russel Sclanders & Jules
Thompson)

CROSS COUNTRY: KZN CHAMPS TO BE HELD THIS SATURDAY THE 12th IN RICHMOND. Please contact Jeff.
ATTENTION TRAIL LOVERS: RACE LAUNCH – Bushman’s Trail!
On the 16th September this year, KZNTR in partnership with Estcourt Athletic Club, will be hosting the inaugural
Bushman’s Trail. The setting for the race is the picturesque Wagendrift Dam, which is situated just outside Estcourt and conveniently just off the N3. This uniquely formatted event will be run over two days and therefore will effectively be a stage race, even though each day is entered separately. This means that there is huge flexibility for participants to structure their race and weekend. On each day there are a number of distances to choose from, and this in conjunction with the family friendly venue, make this event an absolute must for active families of all abilities! We would encourage you to camp at Wagendrift because there is sure to be an unbeatable, all weekend long awesome vibe! For more information on camping and bookings, click here. But if camping is not your “thing” then there are numerous B ‘n B’s in and around Estcourt. And parents, if your little ones are not yet ready to join you on the trail, you don’t need to miss out - the KZNTR Kidzone will be available on both days so both of you can get out on the trail! Food and beverages will also be on sale throughout the event. Saturday’s racing has a later kick off of 09H00 for the longest distance; this should enable runners who are travelling from further afield to arrive timeously for their start. Then on Sunday we’re back to an early start of 06H00 so that everyone is finished with enough time in hand to attend prize giving and travel back home. A quality technical race garment will be given to all runners who run any distance on both days. At prize giving on the Sunday, the first ever Bushman’s Trail Champs will be crowned; these will be the winners of the two longest distances on each day. Saturday’s distances are 20km, 10km & 5km; and Sunday’s are 30km, 20km, 10km and 5km. There will be entries available on the day but a late entry fee (+R40) will be applicable. For more information and to enter the Bushman’s Trail please click here. We are looking forward to hosting you for what is guaranteed to be a busy weekend of active family fun! Dear Skyrunners, Aspiring Skyrunners, mountain runners and walkers,
The Drakensberg Northern Trail, one of KZN Trail Running’s premier events, will take place on the 24thMarch in
2018. Entries open on www.kzntrailrunning.co.za on 1 August, which is Tuesday next week!
The venue for the race is The Border Post at the top Oliviershoek Pass, which is set in the magnificent northern
Drakensberg. Entrants will have the privilege of running and walking in extraordinarily beautiful landscape,
terrain and scenery, an opportunity afforded to few. From the rolling indigenous grasslands of the foothills, the
testing rocky traverses of the ascents and descents to the reward of sublime mountain top running. If the
weather plays fair, mountain runners will be rewarded with views capable temporarily removing them from any
sense of reality. But keep their feet firmly on the ground they must! Runners and walkers in all events should
keep their eyes open for glimpses of natural wildlife!
This hugely popular event is now in its 4th year and has hosted all calibres of trail runners since its
inauguration. Entries for the main event, the 40km Skymarathon® and the 20km Mountain Challenge are
especially sought after and sell out quickly so set your reminders for the 1st August to ensure you don’t miss
out! Equally rewarding are the 10km and 6km trail run/walk which are accessible to all.
Entrants are required to book their own accommodation either at the venue (don’t delay if you would like to
book one of these rooms) or at the many surrounding accommodation resorts.
Check out the event website for more details of the venue and race and to enter from the 1st August.
See you on the trails,
Andrew, Lauren and the KZNTR team
