DirectionsTravelling north on the A9, after passing Pitlochry and crossing the bridge over River Tummel, take the next exit on the left onto the B8079 signposted for Killiecrankie. Continue for about 2.7 miles and after passing the National Trust Visitors Centre on your left, take the next entrance on your right. Go up the hill, passing under the A9, and take the first driveway on the left which has white eagles on the gate posts. Continue to bear left to Old Faskally House.

SituationOld Faskally House is situated close to the Pass of Killiecrankie which is owned and managed by the National Trust for Scotland and is renowned for its outstanding natural beauty and history. The nearby River Garry flows through the Pass of Killiecrankie and ancient woodlands dominate the sides. Only 6.5 miles away is Queen’s View, one of the most popular and photographed views in Scotland.

The property is about four miles north of the popular Highland Perthshire town of Pitlochry. The town provides a good range of services including a cottage hospital, dentist, supermarket, banks and a number of individual retailers. Both primary and secondary schooling is available in the town. Pitlochry is also home to the famous Festival Theatre. There is a mainline railway station which provides easy access to both the north and south, including a sleeper service to London. Also nearby is the

popular House of Bruar with a wide range of shopping, including a food hall, and a restaurant.

The City of Perth, about 31 miles to the south, provides a wider range of facilities and services including restaurants, cinema, and national retailers. Recreational pursuits are readily available in the local vicinity including golf courses, hill walking and water sports on the nearby lochs and rivers.

Description Old Faskally House is described in its Historic Scotland listing as “probably late 18th century” but is thought to have parts which date back to the 16th century.. It is Category C listed and is a beautiful property with extensive south facing views, in about 2.5 acres of mature grounds of note.

There is a fine balance of public rooms and bedrooms with the additional benefit of an independent annexe. There are many typical period features such as bay windows, high ceilings, ornate cornicing and wall panelling.

HistoryThe lands of Faskally belonged from the early 16th century to a branch of Clan Donnachaidh (Robertson). After the death in about 1777 of the Jacobite George Robertson, the estate passed, with considerable debts, to his nephew, Charles Duncan. In 1781, following a series of complicated financial transactions, Faskally was acquired by Henry Butter. In 1831, Henry’s son, Archibald Butter, described as a “gentleman-soldier”, commissioned William Burn to build a new mansion

house, to replace what is now Old Faskally House. The property is referred to in sales details of 1910 as the “Dower House”, with a smoking room, dining room, drawing room, bedroom on ground floor, six other bedrooms and dressing rooms.

AccommodationThe oak panelled entrance vestibule has parquet flooring and a glazed door to the reception hall. This too has oak wall panelling and a herringbone parquet floor. A multi fuel stove is set in a stone fireplace and a large window overlooks the garden.

To the left of the hall is the dining room which has two windows overlooking the garden and a door to a service corridor which leads to the kitchen. Adjacent to the dining room is a butlers panty with glass and china cabinet and double sink.

The sitting room, to the right of the hallway, has been extended by adding a bay window with an atrium above and a fitted window seat. It has an open fireplace and a connecting door to the drawing room. This impressive and very light room has a bay window facing south west with fitted seating and a further window to the south east. It has an open fireplace with an ornate surround and shelved display alcoves. A further door from the sitting room accesses a hallway with double doors to the garden. There is a WC off this hall, which links through to the inner staircase hall and thence to the service corridor and the kitchen.
