    nodded her head>

    ?;hat sort of thing is that: that rattles round

    so merrily:? said the girl: and she too' the

    spindle and /anted to spin too> But s+ar+ely

    had she tou+hed the spindle /hen the magi+

    de+ree /as fullled: and she pri+'ed her nger

    /ith it>

    And: in the 9ery moment /hen she felt thepri+': she fell do/n upon the bed that stood

    there: and lay in a deep sleep> And this sleep

    e4tended o9er the /hole pala+e: the 'ing and

    =ueen /ho had ust +ome home: and had

    entered the great hall: began to go to sleep:

    /as nothing of it to be seen: not e9en the Dag

    upon the roof> But the story of the beautiful

    sleeping Briar #ose: for so the prin+ess /as

    named: /ent about the +ountry: so that from

    time to time 'ingsC sons +ame and tried to get

    through the thorny hedge into the +astle> But

    they found it impossible: for the thorns held

    fast together: as if they had hands: and the

    youths /ere +aught in them: +ould not get

    loose again: and died a miserable death>

    After long: long years a 'ingCs son +ame again

    to that +ountry: and heard an old man tal'ing

    about the thorn hedge: and that a +astle /as

    said to stand behind it in /hi+h a /onderfully

    beautiful prin+ess: named Briar #ose: had been

    asleep for a hundred years: and that the 'ingand =ueen and the /hole +ourt /ere asleep

    li'e/ise> .e had heard: too: from his

    grandfather: that many 'ings: sons had

    already +ome: and had tried to get through the

    thorny hedge: but they had remained sti+'ing

    fast in it: and had died a pitiful death>

    but large and beautiful Do/ers: /hi+h parted

    from ea+h other of their o/n a++ord: and let

    him pass unhurt: and then they +losed again

    behind him li'e a hedge> And /hen he entered

    the house: the Dies /ere asleep upon the /all:the +oo' in the 'it+hen /as still holding out his

    hand to sei$e the boy: and the maid /as sitting

    by the bla+' hen /hi+h she /as going to

    plu+'>

    .e /ent on farther: and in the great hall he

    sa/ the /hole of the +ourt lying asleep: and upby the throne laid the 'ing and =ueen> Then he

    /ent on still farther: and all /as so =uiet that a

    breath +ould be heard: and at last he +ame to

    the to/er: and opened the door into the little

    room /here Briar #ose /as sleeping>

    There she lay: so beautiful that he +ould not

    astonishment> And the horses in the +ourtyard

    stood up and shoo' themsel9es: the hounds

    umped up and /agged their tails: the pigeons

    upon the roof pulled out their heads from

    under their /ings: loo'ed round: and De/ into

    the open +ountry: the Dies on the /all +rept

    again: the re in the 'it+hen burned up and

    Di+'ered and +oo'ed the meat: the oint began

    to turn and si$$le again: and the +oo' ga9e theboy su+h a bo4 on the ear that he s+reamed:

    And then the marriage of the 'ingCs son /ith

    Briar #ose /as +elebrated /ith all splendour:

    the pretty little maiden in her elegant bed: he

    Far out in the stream gre/ a number of /ater

    lilies: /ith broad green lea9es: /hi+h seemed

    to Doat on the top of the /ater> The largest of

    these lea9es appeared farther o2 than the

    rest: and the old toad s/am out to it /ith the

    /alnut3shell: in /hi+h little Tiny lay still asleep>

    /ild yello/ Do/ers: to ma'e it loo' pretty for

    her ne/ daughter3in3la/> Then she s/am out

    /ith her ugly son to the leaf on /hi+h she had

    pla+ed poor little Tiny> She /anted to fet+h the

    pretty bed: that she might put it in the bridal

    +hamber to be ready for her> The old toad

    bo/ed lo/ to her in the /ater: and said: ?.ere

    is my son: he /ill be your husband: and you

    /ill li9e happily in the marsh by the stream>?

    ?!roa': +roa': +roa':? /as all her son +ould say

    for himself so the toad too' up the elegant

    little bed: and s/am a/ay /ith it: lea9ing Tiny

    all alone on the green leaf: /here she sat and

    /ept> She +ould not bear to thin' of li9ing /ith

    the old toad: and ha9ing her ugly son for a

    husband> The little shes: /hi+h s/am about inthe /ater beneath: had seen the toad: and

    heard /hat she said: so they lifted their heads

    abo9e the /ater to loo' at the little maiden> As

    soon as they +aught sight of her: they sa/ she

    /as 9ery pretty: and it made them 9ery sorry

    to thin' that she must go and li9e /ith the ugly

    Tiny sailed past many to/ns: and the little

    birds in the bushes sa/ her: and sang: ?;hat a

    lo9ely little +reature? so the leaf s/am a/ay

    /ith her farther and farther: till it brought her

    to other lands> A gra+eful little /hite butterDy

    +onstantly Duttered round her: and at last

    alighted on the leaf> Tiny pleased him: and she

    /as glad of it: for no/ the toad +ould not

    possibly rea+h her: and the +ountry through

    /hi+h she sailed /as beautiful: and the sunshone upon the /ater: till it glittered li'e li=uid

    gold> She too' o2 her girdle and tied one end

    of it round the butterDy: and the other end of

    the ribbon she fastened to the leaf: /hi+h no/

    glided on mu+h faster than e9er: ta'ing little

    Tiny /ith it as she stood> Presently a large

    +o+'+hafer De/ by the moment he +aughtsight of her: he sei$ed her round her deli+ate

    /aist /ith his +la/s: and De/ /ith her into a

    tree> The green leaf Doated a/ay on the broo':

    and the butterDy De/ /ith it: for he /as

    fastened to it: and +ould not get a/ay>

    himself by her side on a large green leaf: ga9e

    her some honey from the Do/ers to eat: and

    told her she /as 9ery pretty: though not in the

    least li'e a +o+'+hafer> After a time: all the

    +o+'+hafers turned up their feelers: and said:

    ?She has only t/o legsH .o/ ugly that loo's>?

    ?She has no feelers:? said another> ?.er /aist

    is =uite slim> PoohH She is li'e a human being>?

    ?8hH She is ugly:? said all the lady +o+'+hafers:

    although Tiny /as 9ery pretty> Then the+o+'+hafer /ho had run a/ay /ith her:

    belie9ed all the others /hen they said she /as

    ugly: and /ould ha9e nothing more to say to

    her: and told her she might go /here she li'ed>

    Then he De/ do/n /ith her from the tree: and

    pla+ed her on a daisy: and she /ept at the

    thought that she /as so ugly that e9en the+o+'+hafers /ould ha9e nothing to say to her>

    And all the /hile she /as really the lo9eliest

    +reature that one +ould imagine: and as tender

    and deli+ate as a beautiful roseleaf>

    &uring the /hole summer poor little Tiny li9ed

    =uite alone in the /ide forest> She /o9e

    and the trees and the Do/ers had /ithered>

    The large +lo9erleaf under the shelter of /hi+h

    she had li9ed: /as no/ rolled together and

    shri9elled up: nothing remained but a yello/

    /ithered stal'>

    She felt dreadfully +old: for her +lothes /ere

    torn: and she /as herself so frail and deli+ate:

    that poor little Tiny /as nearly fro$en to death> Then she /rapped

    herself up in a dry leaf: but it +ra+'ed in the

    middle and +ould not 'eep her /arm: and she

    shi9ered /ith +old> Gear the /ood in /hi+h shehad been li9ing lay a +orneld: but the +orn

    had been +ut a long time nothing remained

    but the bare dry stubble standing up out of the

    fro$en ground>

    Poor little Tiny stood before the door ust li'e a

    little beggar3girl: and begged for a small pie+e

    of barley+orn: for she had been /ithout a

    morsel to eat for t/o days>

    ?@ou poor little +reature:? said the eld3mouse:

    /ho /as really a good old eld3mouse: ?+ome

    into my /arm room and dine /ith me>? She

    /as 9ery pleased /ith Tiny: so she said: ?@ou

    are =uite /el+ome to stay /ith me all the

    /inter: if you li'e but you must 'eep my

    rooms +lean and neat: and tell me stories: for

    ?;e shall ha9e a 9isitor soon:? said the eld3

    mouse one day ?my neighbor pays me a 9isit

    on+e a /ee'> .e is better o2 than < am he has

    large rooms: and /ears a beautiful bla+' 9el9et

    But Tiny did not feel at all interested about this

    other pretty songs> And the mole fell in lo9e

    /ith her be+ause she had su+h a s/eet 9oi+e

    but he said nothing yet: for he /as 9ery

    +autious> A short time before: the mole had

    dug a long passage under the earth: /hi+h led

    from the d/elling of the eld mouse to hiso/n: and here she had permission to /al' /ith

    Tiny /hene9er she li'ed> But he /arned them

    not to be alarmed at the sight of a dead bird

    Toby said nothing but /hen the t/o othershad turned their ba+'s on the bird: she

    a++ompanied the lady home> But during the

    night Toby +ould not sleep so she got out of

    bed and /o9e a large: beautiful +arpet of hay

    then she +arried it to the dead bird: and spread

    it o9er him /ith some do/n from the Do/ers

    /hi+h she had found in the eld3mouseCs room>

    ?Fare/ell: you pretty

    little bird:? said she: ?fare/ell than' you for

    your delightful singing during the summer:

    /hen all the trees /ere green: and the /arm

    sun shone upon us> Then she laid her head on

    the birdCs breast: but she /as alarmedimmediately: for it seemed as if something

    inside the bird /ent ?thump: thump>?

    Toby trembled 9ery mu+h she

    /as =uite frightened: for the bird /as large: a

    great deal larger than herself:3 she /as only an

    in+h high> But she too' +ourage: laid the /ool

    strength: and be able to Dy about again in the
