Year 6 Autumn Term
2016
First day in Year 6
Friday Fun
‘Friday Fun’ is an end of week reward for hard work, good behaviour, trying their best, keeping their desks tidy and many other positive aspects of life at
Brabyns.
Canal Art
Following traditional canal art designs, Year 6 painted wooden spoons.
Working Hard!
Bananagrams Club
Bananagram club meets every Tuesday break and has a number of Year 6 members. They try to climb up their own Bananagram ladders by creating as many words as they can.
Art Day
Year 6 had great fun at the recent Art Day. They created emoji faces and helped to finish the whole school glitter tree.
History
Oracle Bones Year 6 are studying the Shang Dynasty in History. These photographs show a role play activity, where the children have taken on the roles of Shang Kings or Diviners. The King is asking the Diviner a question, which is then written on a bone (shoulder blade from an oxen/large animal) or even the shell of a turtle. The diviner then drills the oracle bone, pushes a red hot poker in the hole until the bone cracks and then reads the cracked bone parts to give the answer!
Shang Dynasty
In ICT, Year 6 were practising how to use the Bloggies and iPads. They are going to be making their own films about school life.
ICT
Poetry Spider Acrostic
Year 6 worked in house teams to produce an acrostic poem—SPIDERS. They had previously read a newspaper article: ‘Crawling With Spiders’ as an exam preparation text. Everyone knows more facts about spiders now, especially the Noble False Widow, the only harmful British spider.
National Poetry Day
Year 6 celebrated National Poetry Day by writing postcard poems. We had postcards from Unicorns, Polar Bears, Beavers and a Guillemots to mention just a few! At the end of the day, some of the class read excerpts from their poems to the rest of the school. Here is an extract from the Beaver’s poem: I think I’m going deaf from the thud of wood falling, So next, I might try dry stone walling!
PSHCE Our Perfect School
‘In PSHCE, the children were challenged to create their ideal place for learning, by
thinking about key factors that would help them learn and play. They brain-stormed on
post it notes, shared their ideas and drew out common themes. Finally, they designed
a logo and a motto for their dream school, remembering that ‘effective learning and
play’ were the key focus.

Reproducing Klimt In Art
Halloween Disco Year 6 are all ready to party, but someone looks like they could do with a good meal!
Advice from Past Pupils
Year 6 had some visitors! Past pupils from Marple Hall, Manchester High and Stockport Grammar came to talk to the class about their transition to senior school and the highs and lows of moving on from Brabyns. They gave the class some very sound advice and helpful hints too.
Merry Christmas!
The children were allowed to bring Christmas decorations for their desks and as you can see, some of them have really ‘gone to town’! Everybody has also been eagerly awaiting their turn to open one of the advent calendars. Chocolate and Love Hearts really go down a treat.
Happy New Year!
