A powerhouse of passion and temperament, a charismatic blend of naiveté and calculation – Eva Perón needs only a microphone and a podium to give even dictators goose bumps with her speeches. When Evita speaks, the world listens. Including, reluctantly, Spain’s fascist dictator Franco and his rigorously conservative wife Doña Carmen. It is 1947 and Franco needs allies to support his anti-communist politics. Argentina’s President Juan Perón agrees to a state visit – but sends his wife instead, much to the dismay of Franco and, especially, his wife. And so, in Madrid, two strong women cross paths – and cross swords over a third woman, perhaps the strongest of all: the ardent communist freedom fighter Juana Doña, sentenced to death for inciting crimes against the state. As Juana’s young son writes a letter to Eva Perón imploring her to save his mother, chance leads the boy directly to Evita, who is moved by his letter and does all she can to have Juana’s sentence commuted to a prison term. Her intervention infuriates Doña Carmen; but she knows that as long as Evita is the Francos’ guest in Spain, there is only one first lady...
