“WITHOUT SPORTS, WHO WOULD YOU FOLLOW?”
This is the question the billboard asked me, recently, as I was driving down the highway. I’m a
pastor, so you can anticipate my answer: “With or without sports I follow Jesus!” But then I
thought about ESPN (they sponsored the billboard) and how sports and the media influence
our culture.
Who or what do you follow? Bruce Larson, who has been called a “visionary pastor” was fas-
cinated by the way life-changing truth can be communicated person-to-person. He conducted
an experiment. He asked hundreds of people this two-part question: Which person has been
the most influential force in your life, and what was the nature of your relationship with this
person?
• First, he found out that the influential person was looked up to, but always treated the
other person as a friend. He was willing to be a servant in the relationship.
• Second, in the stories that were told, the influential person was genuinely interested in the
other person’s life.
• Third, the influential person was vulnerable and open about their own weaknesses. They
were honest and honestly asked others for help.
What does this mean in our relationship with Jesus? First, Jesus is the Son of God—but he
became a human. He came among us as a servant to share God’s love in every way. We can do
that too! Second, Jesus was genuinely interested in other people. He had compassion for them
and cared about their needs—especially those who were on the fringes of society. We can do
that! Finally, the vulnerability of Jesus was expressed in a variety of ways. He openly wept at
the death of his friend Lazarus. He prayed fervently in the Garden of Gethsemane. He delight-
ed in children. He cried out from the cross to His Father. Jesus showed us an honest way to
ask for help when He needed it. Maybe the best example of this is the fact that He recruited
twelve guys and took them on the road with Him. Jesus was open and
honest about what He needed. We can do that!
Following Jesus is never easy. It usually means we give up our own pri-
orities and let Him take the lead. The message of the Christian gospel is
best shared relationally, by being a friend, by genuinely caring about
others and by being honest and vulnerable about our own needs. May
Jesus give you many opportunities to share His love as you “FORM
RELATIONSHIPS” and follow him in 2019.

February 23rd, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm
St. John’s Lutheran Church
Please join us for a seminar hosted by our local
missionary to Muslims, Yvette Moy, on Saturday,
February 23, 2019, at St. John's Lutheran
Church. Disciple Nations will be a powerful
event! "Because of Nasser's testimony of sal-vation from Islam to Christ, and Daisy, his wife's testimony of prayer, they are able to share and teach Christians how to witness and reach the Muslim world through prayer, out-reach, and education." I have heard Nasser
speak and would say his testimony is one that
should be heard by all!
Information is available and registration is open
online at www.sjlc.com through February
20th. Scroll to the right on the rotating banner on
their homepage to find the link.
Please also consider donating to the ministry of
Yvette Moy through the Salaam Isa Mission Socie-
ty. Support for her is much needed and appreciat-
ed. A link for donation can be found on OSW's
website www.oswlc.org under the "Give" tab,
scroll to the "Beyond Tithing" Link.

garding Yvette's ministry and let us know if you

Help Your Local Community Recover
The current government shutdown has increased the
number of local families in need. This increased need
not only affects federal employees, but others who suf-
fer indirectly in this economic situation. Many of those
in need will not receive back pay and struggle to make
ends meet. This puts an additional strain on agencies
that already provide needed support to those in the local
community. OSW accepts non-perishable food and
monetary donations for these purposes.
Non-perishable food donations will be sent to Loudoun
Hunger Relief. Canned non-perishable foods such as
cereal, cooking oil, canned fruit, spaghetti sauce, rice,
pasta, hearty soups, etc., may be left in the coat closet.
Monetary donations will be handled through benevo-
lence for requests in paying rent, utilities, and other basic
necessities. Cash donations should be marked
"Benevolence Fund" and placed in the offering plate.
Whatever you can afford to give will go directly to fulfill
the continuing need. This current additional crisis will
impact the average family for months to come. We ap-
preciate your generosity and thank you in advance for
your donations to this cause.
If you have any questions, please contact Andie Wessell.

THE MISSION OF OUR SAVIOR’S WAY—DO YOU KNOW IT?
The Mission of Our Savior’s Way is to GLORIFY GOD and MAKE DISCIPLES for JESUS CHRIST by …
• FORMING RELATIONSHIPS
• EXPERIENCING JESUS TOGETHER
• SHARING GOD’S LOVE
Doing Life Together
Doing life together is more than the name of the small group ministry at OSWLC. Doing life together describes God’s intent for our lives. God created us for relationships. In Genesis 2:18, God said, “It is not good for man to be alone”.
God is love. Love is not just what God does. Love is who God is. And where there is love, there is community.
God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Jesus said that we can experience the very love of God when we too come
together in community. Jesus said, “Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the middle of them.” God can be found wherever people care and support, learn and grow, and share life together
in Jesus’ name.
At OSWLC, we recognize the importance of community and
the powerful effect that community has on our faith and our
understanding of life. We hope that you will join us in
“Doing Life Together.” Check out our small groups on
