Too often, though, the deck seems stacked against them. A photographer’s first African safari — or first serious wildlife photography trip of any kind — can come with a steep learning curve. The good news is that with a little preparation, awareness of the situation you’re going into, and practice of a few techniques in advance of your trip, you can radically improve your chances of “getting lucky” on safari. This presentation will deal with: exposure and depth of field considerations, optimizing camera setup, taking control of autofocus options, working from a safari vehicle, awareness and preparedness, tracking fast-moving objects, anticipating animal behavior and where and when to go to maximize the quality of the experience.

Each year, tens of thousands go on safari in Africa, hoping to bring home wildlife photos that capture the drama and beauty they have seen in the pages of National Geographic. Too often, though, the deck seems

stacked against them. A photographer’s first African safari — or first serious wildlife photography trip of any kind — can come with a steep learning curve.
