belgrave sq Victoria Railway Station

11 minutes walkThe LB&SCR introduced the first all-Pullman train in the UK in December 1881 running from Victoria to Brighton, Pullman Limited this ran between London and Brighton via Horsham and subsequently ordinary rolling stock was added to this service. In 1888 a second all-Pullman service was instituted, using carriages lit by electricity and designed by William Stroudley.[3] they provided porters.

The first railway to be built in London was the London and Greenwich Railway a short line from London Bridge to Greenwich, which opened in 1836. This was soon followed by the opening of great rail termini which linked London to every corner of Britain. These included Euston station (1837), Paddington station (1838), Fenchurch Street station (1841), Waterloo station (1848), King's Cross station (1850), and St Pancras station (1863). From 1863, the first lines of the London Underground were constructed.

In Victorian times, gentlemen who felt their sexual powers waning ate prairie oysters, being bulls' testicles, and rich in male sex hormones. Of many weird substances used in Victorian England, experts say this is one that may indeed have worked.

Hugh Welch Diamond (1809 – June 21, 1886 creative licence or henry Peach robinson could have gone insane helping him ??) was an early British psychiatrist and photographer who made a major contribution to the progress of the craft.

A doctor by profession, he opened a private practice in Soho, London, and then decided to specialise in psychiatry, being appointed to Brookwood Hospital, the second Surrey County Asylum. Diamond was one of the founders of the Photographic Society, was later its Secretary and also became the editor of the Photographic Journal.

Diamond was fascinated by the possible use of photography in the treatment of mental disorders; some of his many calotypes depicting the expressions of people suffering from mental disorders are particularly moving. These were used not only for record purposes, but also, he claimed in the treatment of patients - although there was little evidence of success.

Perhaps it is for his attempts to popularize photography and to lessen its mystique that Diamond is best remembered. He wrote many articles and was a popular lecturer, and he also sought to encourage younger photographers. Among the latter was Henry Peach Robinson, who was later to refer to Diamond as a "father figure" of photography. Henry Peach Robinson (9 July 1830, Ludlow, Shropshire – 21 February 1901, Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent) was an English pictorialist photographer best known for his pioneering combination printing - joining multiple negatives to form a single image, the precursor to photomontage. (This technique was first established in 1857 by Oscar Gustave Rejlander of Wolverhampton.)

Working in the belief that mental states are manifested in the physiognomy and that photographs are objective representations of reality, Diamond described himself as a photographer as one who "catches in a moment the permanent cloud, or the passing storm or sunshine of the soul, and thus enables the metaphysician to witness and trace out the connexion between the visible and the invisible." This photograph may have been made to identify the patient or, by recording a phase of the disease, to serve the doctor's diagnosis. Because the image is not annotated the viewer may, like the metaphysician, muse on whether the woman's engaging but ambiguous smile and almost cocky pose denote a state of madness, a return to health, or a challenge to society's parameters of sanity.

In the winter of 1886-7, while paying a visit at Felixstowe, he accidentally received a very severe blow on the head. He did not lose consciousness but was badly cut. The wound healed, but I do not thinkhe ever enjoyed perfect health again.

second son of judge Sir James Fitzjames Stephen

At the beginning of 1888 he founded a weekly newspaper called the Reflector. The paper was conducted in open defiance of many of the rules usually observed by practical journalists. My brother's intention was that the paper should not contain more than one or two articles, that its contents should be political or literary as occasion offered, and that no attempt should be made to affect that universal knowledge which is the ideal of most weekly productions; the paper and printing were to be of the best possible quality and the Reflector was to be its own advertisement. He that hoped good writing alone would procure the comparatively modest circulation which would make the undertaking self-supporting. He edited, managed and published it himself; and wrote I should think nearly half of it. Among his contributors were Mr George Meredith, Mr Gosse, the late Mr Locker-Lampson, Mrs Richmond Ritchie, Miss Mary Cholmondeley, and Messrs Augustine Birrell, Bernard Holland, Rennell Rodd and "F. Anstey." A great quantity of excellent writing was to be found in its columns; but the journal increased in bulk with a rapidity out of all proportion to the growth of its circulation, and after seventeen numbers had appeared my brother's resources were exhausted, and the Reflector ceased to appear. I do not think the circulation had ever exceeded 250, but in my opinion distinct traces of its influence may be observed in at least one important newspaper of to-day, and to some extent in the current style of metropolitan journalism generally. Its failure was a great disappointment to my brother, who had throughout taken an inexplicably sanguine view of the pecuniary side of the enterprise.

James had for the time abandoned all professional work, but in the summer of 1888 his father appointed him Clerk of Assize for the South Wales Circuit, in the hope that in the intervals between circuits, when the official work of that post is comparatively light, he would be able either to resume his contributions to newspapers, or to acquire some practice at the bar. Of this, however, his health did not at any time permit. After vicissitudes of illness, and one period of leave of absence from his official duties, he resigned his Clerkship of Assize in 1890, and in the spring of 1891 returned to Cambridge, where for two terms he took pupils and gave lectures in constitutional history. During this period he revived his fame as a speaker the Union. He could do many things well, but in my opinion he excelled his contemporaries more decidedly as a public speaker - whether on a platform or in a debating society - than in any other capacity. I

think he was the best public speaker I ever heard, and a similar opinion has been expressed by men of much greater experience than mine.

sportSoon after the invention of the photographic process by Daguerre in the 1830's the first nude photographs were created. These early photographs were intended to provide good reference material for painters and sculptors. Many of the early nude photographs were posed in the manner of classic oil paintings to make them more acceptable to critics of this art form.

This new technology of photography was quickly taken up by artists eager for new ways to illustrate the undraped feminine form - and to make a lot of money! In the moral climate of the 19th century the only officially sanctioned photography of the body was for the production of artist's studies. However many were produced as erotic images for the 'discerning gentleman.'

This club was established in 1823 by John Wilson Croker, Sir Thomas Lawrence, and others for individuals known for scientific, literary or artistic accomplishments as well as patrons of these endeavors. The club library was thought to be one of the best in London. A classical revival building, it has a front portico with paired Doric columns, a continuous balustrade on the main floor (piano nobile), a frieze above that floor copied from the Parthenon, and a statue of Pallas Athene by Baily above the porch. (The third story was added later.)

Entrance frontAlthough the side of the club building abuts Pall Mall, the impressive entrance faces Waterloo Place.

No London club ranks higher than the Athenaeum, which was founded in 1824 and has a membership limited to 1,200. The entrance is in Waterloo Place, and the building, which was designed by Decimus

Burton, and cost £35,000, abuts also on Pall Mall. Its exterior is chiefly remarkable for the frieze, and for the figure of Minerva, by Baily, over the handsome porch. Of the interior the Library is the chief glory. The membership is made tip of those distinguished in letters, art, and science, with judges and bishops, and politicians of Ministerial rank.

Victorian Houses

Following the industrial revolution of the 19th century, a third category of country houses were built as newly rich industrialists and bankers were eager to display their newly found wealth and taste. By the 1850s, with the British economy booming, new mansions were built in one of the many revivalist architectural styles popular throughout the 19th century.[13] The builders of these new houses were able to take advantage of the political unrest in Europe that gave rise to a large trade in architectural salvage.[13] This new wave of country house building are exemplified by the Rothschild properties in the Home counties.

Royal visitsAs Claridge's reputation grows, it is visited by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The hotel soon becomes a favourite of heads of state and royalty throughout Europe.

Londons ladies clubs Dover Street, centre of feminine Club-land. Lady A. is going to her club; will it be the Empress, Sandringham, Sesame, Pioneer, or Green Park? They all lie within a stone's throw. The carriage stops at the Empress; Lady A. passes through the heavy swing doors, and is in the most luxurious ladies club in London. In the hall she finds as visitor waiting for her, non-members being allowed no farther than this without their hostesses. Together they [-115-] pass on to the Lounge; the band is playing, and "five-o-clocker," as the French drolly style tea, going forward. Footmen with tea-trays move swiftly hither and thither; groups of fashionably attired men and women are standing or sitting about, chatting and listening to the music. The Empress is a favourite rendezvous, and on Sunday evening full to overflowing.

era of dizzying technological advance: in the 20 years between 1867 and 1887 alone, the typewriter, the telephone, the gramophone, the telegraph, the electric light bulb, the internal combustion engine, and the transatlantic cable were all invented.

"Racing & Politics"Greville-Nugent as caricatured by Spy (Leslie Ward) in Vanity Fair, December 1881

Hi all! This writing project came about as I finished and published my first eBook The Love Thief. I've actually written quite a lot but have never finished a single thing...sound familiar?

It took me a year and a half to actually complete my first full manuscript. The Love Thief is a 20,000 word novella. I quit that project several times for many different reasons, "I suck as a writer”, “how do I keep track of the story line” and my favorite “I just don’t feel like writing today.”

But by struggling through that awful feeling of I'll never finish this stupid thing to OMG I actually finished the stupid thing, I picked up a few tricks that I'm hoping will help a great deal with this new endeavor. I hope you will journey with me as I try out these new ideas for getting from point (A the start) to point (B the end). Please feel free to offer constructive criticism and hone your editorial skills on me:)

The first thing I did once I'd finished that novella was web surf a bit trying to pick up tips that would help me organize this new writing project now that I knew my habits a bit better.

I can lump the basic styles I came across into two basic categories 1. fly by the seat of your pants 2. Outlining.

The category that fit me the best was the "fly by the seat of your pants" style, which was exactly how I wrote The Love Thief. Obviously that style of writing was not optimal for me since it was very frustrating

Page 19: jetmichelle.files.wordpress.com › 2013 › 01 › goldie …  · Web viewgoldie locks story board. Time line. vaughn born 1853. Glorianna born 1855. Vaughn and Glorianna fall in

keeping track of the story. The whole getting from beginning to end without diddling around in the middle forever drove me nuts. However, I can think of nothing more hateful than outlining a story that hasn't completely developed in my mind yet. To etch out each stinking detail in advance ug! Therefore, I'm aiming for a hybrid. This time once I had a basic story percolating in my head I created a loose...very loose outline. Really just a short synopsis of what I wanted to happen in the story but still allowing me to flow with it freely.

So for better or worse I'm going to just hang it out there and post my squishy outline right here for all to see. It's quite scary really! Maybe it will make you feel better about your writing. Maybe it will just give you a good laugh.
