Reliable and safe in operation Epoxy resin is used in the SVS system ashigh-quality primary insulation materialaround live parts. Phases are completelyseparated by epoxy resin thereforepreventing internal arcs. In addition, all

primary components are interconnected via rubber sleeves.The same level of insulation is maintained throughout theentire switchgear. Practical research work on installedswitchgear reveal that the epoxy resin components in theSVS switchgear show no signs of ageing.

System design

Eaton’s modular SVS system is an example of tried andtested high-quality switchgear technology incorporatingvacuum interrupters and epoxy resin insulation.

The SVS system

A fully-enclosed epoxy resin insulated system

with integral vacuum interrupters.

SVS is a compact, modular system developed for mediumvoltage applications up to 24 kV. With flexibility in mind,the panels are assembled from modular componentsincluding circuit-breakers, load-break switches, fuseholders, metering panels, busbars and cable terminals.The system is highly suitable for switching anddistribution equipment used in electricity distributionnetworks, as well as in a variety of industrial applications.

Eaton is recognised throughout the world as the leadingspecialist in epoxy resin-based insulation tech nology.Vacuum interrupters form the heart of the Eatonswitchgear range. These high-quality interrupters havebeen developed and manufactured by Eaton.

The busbar systemThe electrical connection betweentwo panels is provided by three single-phase busbar units, which consist oftubular conductors fully embedded inepoxy resin. These conductors contain

tie rods that clamp the busbar pieces on the variouspanels together. Due to the elasticity of the tie rods thepressure required remains constant under all loadconditions. Rubber sleeves at the connection pointsprovide reliable electrical sealing. It is easy to extendexisting installations and to add on further sections.

The changeover switchAll panels with a switching function areequipped with a changeover switchconsisting of interconnected contact pinsmoving in a vertical plane. Since it ismechanically inter locked, the change overswitch can only be operated when the load-break switch or circuit-breaker is in theopen position.

The change over switch has two positions:

Operating positionIn this position, thechangeover switch isconnected to the busbarsystem so the connectionbetween busbar andoutgoing cable can berealised by closing thecircuit-breaker or load-break switch.

Earthed positionIn this position thechangeover switch isconnected to the mainearthing conductor. In the earthed positionthe changeover switchalso forms a safe

earthed barrier from the cable connectionpoint to the busbar system.

Safe in useThe earthed metal enclosure of theSVS system provides personal safetyduring normal operation (protectionlevel IP2XD in conformity with IECpublication 60529). The live primary

parts and primary component connections are fullyinsulated, removing risk of contact with live parts duringmaintenance, revision and assembly work. The insulationis resistant to voltage surges and mains frequencyrestraining voltage occurring with the rated voltage.

FlexibleThe SVS system is modular in construc -tion. This means that any panel combi na -tion and sequence is possible. In addition,the number of panels capable of beingused in an installation is unlimited as

several sections can easily be connected. Existing SVS switch -gear can also be easily extended by one or more panels. Asthe panels can be quickly assembled and connec ted, flexiblecommis sioning of the switchgear is possible. The panels in theSVS system are compact (min. 420 mm wide), resulting inconsiderable savings in costs and installation space.

The vacuum interrupterVacuum interrupters form the heart of the Eaton switchgear range. To achieve a high level of protectionagainst environmental influences thevacuum interrupters are completelycasted in epoxy resin. The direct

casting process is a key competence of Eaton. Thevacuum interrupters consist of a ceramic cylinder,housing a fixed and a movable contact. Move ment ofthe contact under vacuum conditions is facilitated by abellow. A shield surrounding the contacts prevents theinsulators from becoming contaminated by metal vapourproduced during current interruption. This shield alsoensures good potential distribution over the insulator.

Diffuse dischargeA typical feature of interrupting currentsup till the rated short circuit current inthe Eaton vacuum circuit-breaker is that a large number of parallel arcs arecreated between the contacts. This‘diffuse discharge’ is characterised byvery low arc voltage and short arc

times, resulting in very low arc energy. Contact wear in avacuum interrupter is therefore virtually negligible. Thevacuum inter rupter in the load-break switch can switchnominal currents of max. 630 A. The vacuum interrupter inthe circuit-breaker can switch short-circuit currents up to amaximum of 20 kA for SVS/08 and 25 kA for SVS/12.

User friendlyThe SVS system features uniform andstraightforward operation. Each panelhas an easy-to-understand and clearlyset out mimic diagram, showing everyswitching action. The cable terminal

area is very easy to access. Cables are connected at thefront of the panels at a height of 80 - 90 cm. There isample space for finishing off and securing the cables. All installations are easy to transport using a lifting crane,a fork-lift truck and steel rollers.

Environmental friendlyEaton selects its materials with care. It is essential they are safe for peopleand the environment - not just duringuse, but at the end of their service life,too. For this reason the SVS system

does not contain SF6 insulation gas and all materials usedare environmentally friendly, according to the presentstate of knowledge.

ApplicationThe SVS system of Eaton is ideally suited for use indistribution networks and as indu strial and buildingswitchgear. The system provides reliable switching,protection, metering and distri bution of elec tricalenergy. The SVS system is based on vacuum tech -nology combined with solid insulation. This makes the SVS system especially suitable for application ininfra struc tural projects (i.e. tunnels and subways) andindu strial or commercial environments (i.e. processingindu stry, food industry and hospitals) where a cleanand safe environment is necessary. The SVS system is used in:• Utility: (Main) distribution stations, compact

secondary substations, wind turbines• Infrastructure: Vacuum switching is especially

suitable for tunnels, subways and otherinfrastructural applications

• Industries: Connection to ring cable or LVS system• Commercial: Hospitals, stadiums, shopping centres,

hotels, etc.
