Shah Reza Pahlavi ­ leader of Iran 1953­1979• supported by US in overthrow of previous 

leader> previous leader challenged the British 

who controlled the oil in Iran since days of imperialism

• westernizes Iran, separates the religious law from the state laws, brings women's rights

• creates secret police to deal with those who oppose him

• US supports him regardless of his wrong doings b/c if they don't then communism might spread from Russia to Iran

Pahlavi> less rights for women ­ must cover up & 

obey husbands, can't leave country w/o husband's consent

• people supported him because they were upset with Shah's corrupt rule> rather have an Islamic state than a 

corrupt state– US did not support this revolution, we 

allow Shah to escape to US« angers Iran
