2nd SUNDAY OF ADVENT + II DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO

O people of Sion, behold, the Lord will come to save the nations, and the Lord

will make the glory of his voice heard in the joy of your heart. Cf. Is 30:19, 30

SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT – (CYCLE A)

Trees and Fruits

The Gospel is a very powerful confrontation: John the Baptist against the Pharisees and Sadducees. Oddly,

the Pharisees and Sadducees present themselves as being baptised by John, but he challenges them. John tells them that if they are truly repentant and want union with God, their repentance must bear great fruit because their identification with God is not based on their lineage to Abraham, but in the good fruits they produce for the Kingdom of God.

John adds that there is One following him whose baptism is mightier, and that repentance will be surpassed by a judgment between the wheat and the chaff. Those who are like wheat will be gathered; those who are like chaff will be destroyed!

The question is, what is our repsonse? What is John saying to us, in addressing the Pharisees and Sadducees? The notion of bearing fruit is illustrated twice in John’s address. First, when he demands that people produce the appropriate fruit rather than claim lineage to Abraham. His next illustration follows quickly: the destruction of trees that do not produce good fruit.

Let’s think about this. We often see ourselves in very dim ways, and think that we’re not like Mother Teresa or John Paul II, or others who have done wonderful things for God. Some people say that they can’t be a Eucharistic Servant because “they are not worthy”. We see ourselves as bad fruit rather than as the tree that produces the fruit. John tells us that it’s about what you produe. So, you and I are the trees. What fruit are you producing? What gift do you give to other people that feeds them inside? Obiously, it doesn’t have to be physical gifts! The fruit we offer others can be found in our words, in our care, in our presence that we offer. When others take our produce, are they being brought closer to God? May God speak deeply into yor heart this day, and may God’s love water the very rooots of the Tree that you are. May you – in the unique way

that you are – bear great fruit for the nourishment of others, not only for your own benefit, but for the sake of the Kingdom that Christ proclaimed!

SEGUNDO DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO - (CICLO A)

Árboles y Frutos

El Evangelio es una confrontación muy poderosa: Juan el Bautista contra los fariseos y saduceos. Curiosamente, los fariseos y los saduceos se presentan como bautizados por Juan, pero él los desafía. Juan les dice que, si están verdaderamente arrepentidos y desean la unión con Dios, su arrepentimiento debe dar

gran fruto porque su identificación con Dios no se basa en su linaje a Abraham, sino en los buenos frutos que ellos producen para el Reino de Dios.

Juan añade que hay Uno que viene después de él cuyo bautismo es más poderoso, y que el arrepentimiento será superado por un juicio entre el trigo y la paja. Los que son como el trigo serán recogidos; ¡Los que son

como la paja serán destruidos!

La pregunta es ¿cuál es nuestra respuesta? ¿Qué nos está diciendo Juan al dirigirse a los fariseos ya los saduceos? La noción de dar fruto se ilustra dos veces en el discurso de Juan. Primero, cuando exige que la gente produzca el fruto apropiado en lugar de reclamar el linaje de Abraham. Su siguiente ilustración es

rápida: la destrucción de árboles que no producen buenos frutos.

Pensemos en esto. Muchas veces nos vemos en caminos muy oscuros, y pensamos que no somos como Madre Teresa o Juan Pablo II, u otros que han hecho cosas maravillosas por Dios. Algunas personas dicen que

no pueden ser un siervo eucarístico porque "no son dignos". Nos vemos como frutos malos en lugar de el árbol que produce el fruto. Juan nos dice que es acerca de lo que usted produce. Así que tú y yo somos los

árboles. ¿Qué fruto estás produciendo? ¿Qué regalo le das a otras personas que los alimenta dentro? ¡Obviamente, no tienen que ser regalos físicos! Los frutos que ofrecemos a otros se puede encontrar en

nuestras palabras, en nuestro cuidado, en nuestra presencia que ofrecemos. Cuando otros toman nuestros frutos, ¿se están acercando a Dios? Que Dios hable profundamente en tu corazón este día, y que el amor de

Dios riegue las raíces del Árbol que tú eres. ¡Que ustedes, en la forma única en que ustedes son, den un gran

fruto para el alimento de otros, no sólo para su propio beneficio, sino por el Reino que Cristo proclamó!

THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

A Lesson in Listening and Choosing

As we progress through this Advent season, we have an opportunity to reflect on two important issues: a. listening and b. choosing. In Genesis, we read about Adam and Eve and their inability to listen to God regarding the eating of the forbidden fruit and the consequences. The second reading from Ephesians, Paul listens to God and receives the authority to speak on God’s behalf. Paul asks us to listen to his words as he writes about God’s great love for us. God loves us so much that he adopts us through Jesus Christ. The Gospel of Luke tells us that Mary was alarmed and troubled by the appearance of Gabriel, and yet she listened and was open to the Word of God spoken by the angel.

Choosing. Both Adam and Eve choose not to listen to God and, instead, they act on selfish love. Paul chooses to be God’s messenger and notes that we are all chosen by God to live holy lives without the blemish of sin. And finally, Mary not only listens to God, she chooses to accept His will be being the “handmaid of the Lord.”

With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it is far too easy for consumerism, the love of self over others (i.e., “I want… I want… “) and other stress to distract us from the true heart of Christmas. It would helpful for all of us to avoid these temptations and, instead, set aside quiet time each day where we can truly listen to the words of God and choose to follow His words. As we open ourselves to God’s words of grace and love, we will discover inner peace, and the desire to spread God’s words through our acts of charity and good will toward others. In doing this, we are truly and genuinely choosing to be “handmaids of the Lord” and “who exist for the praise of His glory.”

LA INMACULADA CONCEPCIÓN

Una lección para escuchar y elegir

A medida que avanzamos en este tiempo de Adviento, tenemos la oportunidad de reflexionar sobre dos temas importantes: a) Escuchar

y b) Elegir. En el libro del Génesis, leemos acerca de Adán y Eva y su incapacidad para escuchar a Dios con respecto a comer de la fruta prohibida y las consecuencias. La segunda lectura de Efesios, Pablo escucha a Dios y recibe la autoridad para hablar en nombre de Dios.

Pablo nos pide que escuchemos sus palabras mientras escribe sobre el gran amor de Dios por nosotros. Dios nos ama tanto que nos

adopta a través de Jesucristo. El Evangelio de Lucas nos dice que María estaba alarmada y preocupada por la aparición del ángel Gabriel,

y sin embargo ella escucho y estaba abierta a la Palabra de Dios hablada por el ángel.

Elección. Tanto Adán como Eva deciden no escuchar a Dios y, en cambio, actúan con amor egoísta. Pablo

elige ser el mensajero de Dios y anota que todos somos elegidos por Dios para vivir vidas santas sin la mancha del pecado. Y finalmente, María no sólo escucha a Dios, sino que también acepta que Su

voluntad sea hecha, siendo la "sierva del Señor".

Con el ajetreo y el bullicio de la temporada navideña, es demasiado fácil para el consumismo, el amor de

sí mismo sobre los demás (es decir, "quiero ... quiero ...") y otro estrés, distraernos del verdadero corazón de la Navidad. Sería útil para todos nosotros evitar estas tentaciones y, en cambio, sacar un

tiempo de silencio cada día donde realmente podemos escuchar las palabras de Dios y escoger seguir Sus palabras. Al abrirnos a las palabras de gracia y amor de Dios, descubriremos paz interior y el deseo de

difundir las palabras de Dios a través de nuestros actos de caridad y buena voluntad hacia los demás. Al hacer esto, estamos verdadera y genuinamente eligiendo ser "siervos del Señor" y "que existen para la

alabanza de Su gloria".

Recommended gifts include games, dolls, plush stuffed animals, books, puzzles, educational toys, and sporting goods. (PLEASE no violent toys). We accept individual gifts, office collections, and cash donations. Ages of children are from infants to age 18.
