Keeping your Japanese Maples Healthy in the Heat
by Barry hoffeMoist, well drained acid soil is the key to success. If your maples are in
containers,orinthelandscape,youwillneedtokeeptheirsoilmoist,butnotsoggy. Theydonot liketohavetheir“feet” soaked, so make sure that thesoildrainsquickly.Setyourcontaineronceramicpotfeetthatwillallowthewatertodrainfreely.Inthelandscape,make sure that there is no standingwaterafterthemapleiswatered.We recommend the following soil mix:

Lavender . . .Perennial of the Month
Lavandula:NativetotheMediterraneanregion and prized for fragrant lavenderor purple flowers. Depending on variety,lavendersareusedforperfume,aromaticoil,soap,medicineandsachets.Mostlavenderattractbeesandbutterfliesanddobestinfullsun,welldrainedsoil,andlittlefertilizer.Donotcrowd,andgivegoodaircirculation.Tokeepneatandcompact, shearbackbyone-thirdtoone-halfeveryyearimmediatelyafterbloom.Someofournurseryfavoritesare “Hidcote”, an English dwarf varietywithdeepvioletflowersandmediumgreenfoliage,“Munstead”,anotherEnglishdwarf
varietywithdeepvioletflowersandgreenfoliage.Thisvarietyisalongbloomerandmakes a great low hedge. “Grosso” is anintermedia getting to about 2½' high andwide with fat spikes. This is possibly themost fragrant variety of all. Flowers areviolet blue with darker calyxes and silverfoliage. Often gives repeat blooms in latesummer.Excellentflowerfordrying.“OttoQuasti” is a Spanish lavender growing 3'by 3'. Flowers are deep lavender-purplewithasilverfoliageandtheybloomspringthroughfall.
