Start your journey in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, also referred to as Plantation Country, where visitors can experience the state’s deep and colorful history told through the area’s historical architecture and rich countryside. Visitors and locals alike tour these elaborate and beautiful antebellum mansions experiencing what life was like at these domestic centers of massive cotton, sugar cane and rice plantations.
Visiting plantations along the Mississippi River is both a historical and cultural journey back to this area’s diverse heritage. The architecture reflects the impact of the many different colonists and settlers who made this land their own.
As you tour plantations along the Mississippi between New Orleans and Natchez you’ll see homes influenced by the West Indies plantations, English manor houses, Georgian style, Spanish, Creole and Acadian building styles. You will even see an extraordinary example of an elaborate design called “Steamboat Gothic.”
And then there are the great homes of the Greek Revival period, build just before the Civil War. Planters competed with each other to see who could build the grandest home. If these homes look familiar, don’t be surprised. Many have been used in movies.
The size and splendor of a house depended on the builder’s financial means. This was especially true because once a home was build, it had to be furnished and most fine furnishing had to be shipped from New York and New England or imported from Europe, which was costly.
Often times, when a couple completed building their plantation home, they would travel to Europe for a year or two to select furnishings.
Plantations have a number of curious features that reflect their full purpose. The “belvedere” is a walk located on
the plantation home’s roof. It presents a view of the vast plantation fields as well as the river so the family could watch for steamboats and other river traffic.
Since plantations were rural and often quite isolated, the river was very important. Not only was it a means of transporting goods to market and receiving supplies, it also provided news of the outside world, both near and far. Plantation inhabitants would eagerly await the sound of the calliope that announced an approaching steamboat. Many of the plantations have a “garçonniere,” a name that comes from the French word “garçon” which means boy or young man. At a certain age, young men were sent to sleep in a separate building called the “garçonniere.” Needless to say, these quarters were usually much livelier than the main house.
Town HomesEach winter, the plantation owner took his family from the isolation of the countryside into town for the “social season.” This exciting time of year centered the family’s “town home” which was usually a mansion often time on the scale of the plantation home itself. You will see examples of these magnificent building in Natchez.
Plantation Home ToursThe spectacular plantation exteriors are matched by equally grand interiors that offer great insight into how people lived before the Civil War. Most tours take about an hour and are given by costumed guides each of whom has their favorite stories about the plantation and its builders. Individual house tours usually cost between $5 and $20. Annual pilgrimages held each spring in St. Francisville, and Natchez offer an excellent way to see a group of homes for a fee. These pilgrimages frequently include plantation used as private homes and not usually open to the public.
