Types of Misconduct Observed

◆ Personal business on company time–26%,

◆ Lying to employees–22%,

◆ Abusive behavior–21%,

◆ Company resource abuse–21%, and

◆ Discrimination–18%.

“Generational Differences in Workplace Ethics” – The Ethics Resource Center

Influencing Workplace Ethics

• A strong ethics and compliance program drives all generations – particularly Millennials – to be more proactive in their conduct.

• As employees gain experience in their jobs, their perspectives of ethics change.

• Each generation is unique, hearing messages about the importance of ethics differently than other cohorts.

• Creating advisory groups comprised of employees from each generation could be useful in helping ethics and compliance practitioners modify their messaging.

• Peer mentoring

Understanding andawareness is key toeffective relationshipswith co-workers of every generation.

• Loyalty and Engagement is affected by your connection to people.

• 100% is impossible

• TRY to give everyone the same opportunities to learn and grow

Generational Diversity Enhances the Workplace

Discussion Question

When a Boomer says to another Boomer, “We need to

get the report done,” it is generally interpreted by the

Boomer as an order, it must be done and done now.

However, when a Boomer says to an X’er, “This needs to

be done,” the X’er hears an observation, not a command,

and may or may not do it immediately.

How can the message be better communicated?

Discussion QuestionMayor Jones, of the Traditionalist Generation tells the city engineer late in

the day that a citizen has called with a complaint about a new project’s

design.  City Engineer Smith, a Baby Boomer, sends an e‐mail to her staff

calling a meeting for 5:00 PM to discuss the complaint.  Project Manager

Elliott, a Gen‐X’er, didn’t see the e‐mail because he left early for his son’s

little league game.  Project Designer Barnes, a Millennial, had it on her

calendar that she is volunteering at a homeless shelter that evening

beginning at 5:00 PM and leaves work at that time.

How could this situation have been better handled?
