CONNECTED VEHICLES: STATE OF THE PRACTICE

Disclaimer: Connected vehicles connect with more than just vehicles! (V2V)

□ Vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I), vehicle-to-pedestrian (V2P), traffic

management facilities, and more (so-called V2X, where X is “everything”)

□ As more vehicles and devices connect, the more potential transformation

in how we manage and travel within the transportation system

□ Many different types of communication media

USDOT actively moving forward with groundbreaking research in the areas

of Safety, Mobility, Environment, and Road Weather

□ 57 total applications currently prototyped, designed, demonstrated,

simulated, or undergoing research

□ Safety Pilot Model Deployment in Ann Arbor, Michigan (2,700 vehicles)

Program Categories Connected Vehicles program category will be primarily focused on adoption and

eventual deployment of the system.

Automation Research will focus on topics related to automated road-vehicle systems and related technologies that transfer some amount of vehicle control from the driver to the vehicle.

Emerging Capabilities will focus on future generations of transportation systems.

Enterprise Data programs will continue existing efforts in operational data capture from stationary sensors, mobile devices, and connected vehicles, and expand into research activities involving the development of mechanisms for housing, sharing, analyzing, transporting, and applying those data for improved safety and mobility across all modes of travel.

Interoperability focuses on how to ensure effective connectivity among devices and systems.

Accelerating Deployment advances the work from adoption to wider scale deployment in coordination with several other DOT agencies.

The CV Pilots Deployment Program

will allow proposers (state DOTs,

local governments, university and

research institutions,

private/commercial entities, or a

teaming combination) to develop

functional, real-world deployments

that use connected vehicle

technology

Respondents may propose to further develop any current USDOT CV applications or, if

compelling, present their own concept for development

USDOT will provide funding, technical and outreach support, and other resources to

assist in the further development and successful deployment of these applications
