Recent Squadron Library Donations We are in the process of cataloging and marking several additional books for the squad-ron library. Perhaps you’d be interested in checking one out. The titles are as follows:

1) Encyclopedia of Sailing (One Design & Offshore Yachtsman) 2) Diesel – Fundamentals, Service, Repair (Bill Tolboldt) 3) A Cruising Guide to the Tennessee River, Tom Waterway, and

Lower Tombigbee River (Thomas & Rumsey) 4) The Finely Fitted Yacht – The Boat Improvement Manual (Ferenc Mate)

5) Trent-Severn Waterway – Boating & Road Guide ( The historic route between Lake Ontario and Georgian Bay)

a year-long celebration of the USPS 100th Anniversary.

Each squadron will create unique ribbon streamers to

affix to their district’s ensign. During the 2014 Annual

meeting, districts will parade their ensigns and stream-

ers in an anniversary flag presentation.

All members are encouraged to help plan year long

celebrations in their communities, including municipal

proclamations, appearances at civic and marine organiza-

tion meetings, and presentations during 19–25 May

National Safe Boating Week, a golden opportunity to

begin and to let your community know that your

squadron is a valuable resource.

Let’s share our pride and commitment to boating safety

and education with community celebrations. It is a great

time to be a squadron member! And, our squadron char-

tered 20 November 1944 will have 68 years of service in

November of this year.

If you didn’t attend the USPS Conference in Detroit, you

missed a lot of exciting events that took place near the

General Motors Renaissance Center headquarters on

the Detroit River were the conference was held. Detroit

played a very important key role in the War of 1812 and

this celebration, supported by GM, was to thank the

many military men and women for their service in the

war. Free public tours of four Navy and U.S. Coast Guard

ships were available; including the S Brig Niagara tall

ship (replica of the original) played a decisive role in the

Battle of Lake Erie and was the closest to the Renais-

sance Center where we stayed. The day the ship left port,

they set off one of their cannons—what a sound! Friday

was enjoyable, lunched on the waterfront and listened to

the Marine & Navy bands playing in front of our hotel.

One of many discussions held at the conference was

the planning of USPS 100th year celebration. USPS will

mark 100 years of education, fellowship and community

service in 2014. Based on the powerboat handling skills

programs of businessman Roger Upton at the Boston

Yacht Club in Marblehead, Massachusetts, USPS now

offers boating education programs in cities and towns

across the U.S., its territories and Japan. The organiza-

tion has become an important ally of the U.S. Coast

Guard, the Department of Homeland Security, the

Department of Commerce and the National Oceanic and

Atmospheric Administration. Today, nearly 40,000 mem-

bers in more than 400 squadrons provide boating educa-

tion in everything from seamanship and celestial naviga-

tion to marine electronics and engine maintenance.

USPS Flag and Etiquette

Committee has designed an

anniversary ensign to be flown

on members’ vessels in 2013 and

2014. The Ship’s Store is adding

100th anniversary logo items, an

anniversary commemorative

stamp is under discussion and

community activities are being planned at all levels.

To kick-off the yearlong ceremony, anniversary ensigns

will be presented to all 32 districts at the 2013 Annual

Meeting in Jacksonville, which will mark the beginning of

September’s Dinner Meeting at North Palm Beach County Club

These bridge members were not at the Change of Watch in June, hence they were sworn into office at Sept’s Dinner Meeting. They are: Rose Moskowitz, SEO; Bryan Moskowitz, Treasurer; Barbara Roemmele, Ass’t Treasurer; and P/C Hank Resch, Member-at-Large.

(Below) members enjoyed the social, dinner and program. (Photos by Art Dodd, SN)

Guest Speaker Secretary & District Admin.

MARY DODD, SN, enlightened us on the programs that will accompany the celebration of USPS’s 100th Anniversary year (USPS was founded in February 1914). Every District will be issued an Anniversary Ensign. Each squadron will attach a streamer their District’s ensign. All of the ensigns will be gathered at the 2014 USPS Annual Meeting.

LISA PARK, of Wells Fargo, enlightened us on the pitfalls of Identity Theft. Wow, the things that can happen to us. Those in attendance are now better prepared to prevent this intrusion.

LAST CALL FOR ROSTER

and/or DATABASE CORRECTIONS

We are now well launched into a new Bridge officer, member course, and social event year (2012-2013)! In the final analysis, only you can be the last (and best) proof checker of your membership data! Please take a few minutes to check the CURRENT data for yourself that is in the USPS (National) database. You can access it at: http://www.usps.org/cgi-bin-nat/tools/myprofile.cgi . You may need to “log in” with your membership number and “PIN”. The latter may be found on your member-ship renewal paperwork. If you find corrections that need to be made to your address, ZIP+4 code, phone number, Email address, boat Name, type, length, and home port (plus MMSI and/or SKYPE number if appropriate), please send an Email note to: [email protected] and we’ll try to get it corrected before the next mailing. Also, we’ll electronically notify National so that their future communications will reach you in the most direct manner. Thanks and have a Great Boating Year!
