Wake from Your Sleep

Composer NotesPerhaps best suited to a small group of singers on the order of the madrigal groups of the Middle Ages, “Wake from Your Sleep” uses the style and flavor of a medieval carol. It is an announcement of the Savior’s birth and a prayer that God will be born also in our own hearts. It is intended to be light and dance-like, and if it is used as a full choir piece special care must be taken that it does not lose this crisp quality. We have not used this song as a congregational hymn, but rather have kept it for a point in the liturgy when the congregation is praying and listening in meditation.

The guitar accompaniment is meant to be simple and light, in order to keep the medieval quality. The best accompaniment technique seems to be to pluck the strings of a chord simultaneously on the first and third beats of each measure, except in the measure where three chords appear. Once a guitarist gets the feel of the song, he or she may want to add a few single notes on the second beat of some measures, but the emphasis should always remain on the first and third beats. It is also quite important that the correct bass note is struck by the thumb.

—Dan Schutte
