944 has found three local businesses that are doing right by both

mother nature. While this isn't a definitive

guide, it is a start.

unique because they are 80 percent certified organic, which

is a higher number of natural ingredients than usually found

in makeup or shampoo. In addition to hair and skin products,

Aveda makes other salon goodies, such as candles and tea.

Aveda isn't just any natural product company, though. In an

effort to be more eco-friendly, customers can return their empty

product bottles or containers to any location, and the company

will recycle them. However, Aveda's No. l reason for being so

earth-friendly is the discontinuation of products before the

plants or ingredients used to make the product become scarce.

Aveda is also committed to clean water, and both its 2007 and

2008 Earth Month campaigns were able to raise $5.1 million for

organizations that work to protect clean water.

CONSPIRE COFFEEConspire is a collectively owned and operated art boutiq

espresso bar, library and all-around hanqout. Its doors are op

In the back room of the store is a community library by Mob

Action University, where patrons can find books and magazines

to read, check out or purchase. Guests also enjoy coffee while

they shop or read in the library. Conspire partnered with John

Sagasta of The Coffee Conspiracy, which offers handmade

coffee, tea and chai, in addition to bagels, pastries and fruit

ECO ZEN BOUTIQUEAlthough Eco Zen Boutique has a headquarters in Temp

strictly an online boutique, which is why some people may be

unfamiliar with the name. The shop is known for handpicking its

product lines, which include natural, organic, recycled, chemical-

free, fairly traded and sustainable products. The company

is a member of 1% for the Planet, an organization devoted to

conserving natural resources. More importantly, the online-

based company, uses eco-friendly materials (

etc.) when packing and shipping products to customers. And

the clothing is made without harming any animals — a fact that

certainly pleases the shop's vegan and vegetarian demographics.
