94 Heeresgruppe Slid (Army Group South)
Army Group South was formed on September 1, 1939, for the Polish campaign underthe command of General (later Field Marshal) Gerd von Rundstedt. In October 1939,Army Group South also became Theater Command East (Oberbefehlshaber Ost). OnOctober 20,' 1939, the Army Group was redesignated Army Group A. It was renamedArmy Group South on April 1, 194-1, and moved into Rumania. It controlled theGerman and Rumanian armies, with Italian and Hungarian elements, which freedBessarabia of Soviet control following the opening of the Russian campaign inJure 194-1 and advanced into the Ukraine and the northern Caucasus. On July 15,194-2, the name was changed to Army Group B. The former Army Group Don was re-designated Army Group South on February 14-, 194-3, under the command of FieldMarshal Erich von Manstein. It withdrew to the Crimea during the Soviet offen-sive of the following winter and later to the lower Dniester area. On March 30,194-4-, it was renamed Army Group North Ukraine. The former Army Group SouthUkraine was redesignated Army Group South on September 20, 1944, under the com-mand of General Johannes Friessner. It then withdrew through Rumania into Hun-gary. From April 22, 1945, it was subordinate to Theater Command South (Ober-befehlshaber Sud). It was disbanded on May 8, 1945.*
