Shoveling Snow and Lower Back PainNow that the winter months are in full effect, there are plenty of drive ways, sidewalks and pathways that need

to be cleared of snow. Improper snow shoveling continues to be one of the most common causes of lower back

pain during the winter months. Here are some simple tips to follow:

• Warm up thoroughly prior to shoveling snow (brisk walk, stretch)

• Use a light, plastic bladed shovel with proper handle length for you

• Bend at your hips and knees and NOT your low back when lifting

• Keep the heaviest portion of the shovel close to your body

• Keep loads light and take your time, take a break if needed

• Avoid twisting and throwing heavy snow

• If possible use a snow blower

If you still develop low back pain after shoveling and need treatment, chiropractic manipulation is a safe and

effective treatment for low back pain. Other effective low back treatments and therapies include:

• Active Release Techniques (ART) • Massage Therapy

• Graston therapy • Stretching and strengthening exercises

• Ultrasound therapy

If you or someone you know is suffering from lower back pain, please contact the Howard Chiropractic

Clinic, SC at (920) 434-2221 to schedule an appointment.

Bay Port’sPiratePreschoolProgram

Sarah Broehm Bay Port’sPirate Preschool Program isoffered for children ages 3 to5 that are not currently en-rolled in Kindergarten. Theirgoal is to provide high schoolEarly Childhood Educationstudents with an opportunityto apply theory learned in theclassroom. Each day, BayPort High School studentshave theme-based activities, games and songs that pro-mote a positive learning ex-perience. In the preschoolprogram, students strive tohelp each child attain a posi-tive self-concept through playand socialization.

During this experience, high school students workwith the preschool children ina student-teacher capacity to:

• Provide a developmentallyappropriate, hands-onlearning environment.

• Provide a stimulating, se-cure setting that promotesa love of active learning.

• Provide a unique programdesign that promotes so-cial, emotional, cognitive, and physical growth.

Pirate Preschool is con-ducted in room E124 of BayPort High School, under thedirect supervision of SarahBroehm, Family & ConsumerScience Teacher.

On the first two days ofDecember, the middleschool students of St. Johnthe Baptist School partici-pated in “Boot Camp” atBODE Central fitness centerin Howard. Students wereengaged in world-classstrength training and fitnessactivities.

These same activities arebeing emulated in the Phys-ical Education program atSt. John the Baptist CatholicSchool. When you walk intothe gym you hear Christianmusic playing, and you seestudents who are workinghard, engaged in cutting-edge strength and athletictraining activities.

Michael Odberg, physicaleducation instructor at St.John the Baptist, initiatedthis new partnership withBODE to help support astrong fitness program at theschool. Much of Odberg’sfocus in the physical educa-tion program is on strengthbuilding and athletic train-ing.

“Programs that focus oncore athletic skills andstrength training prepare stu-dents to be successful inwhatever active endeavorthey choose to be in,” saidOdberg, describing the rea-son for this focus in physicaleducation. “This trip to

BODE allowed students toencounter this functional fit-ness style training in aworld-class facility.”

Brian Gajeski, owner ofBODE, has worked withOdberg in identifying strate-gic direction in the fitnessprogram at St. John the Bap-tist Catholic School.

Gajeski helped the schoolidentify key equipment pur-chases and provided consul-tation on programdevelopment. Following thestudent field trips to BODE,Gajeski will be coming to St.John the Baptist CatholicSchool to provide two train-ing sessions with the middleschool. One student de-scribed the time at BODEsaying “Brian helped us getbetter and taught us how tochallenge yourself to getstronger.”

“Working closely with thecommunity and buildingpartnerships, like this onewith BODE, allow ourschool to provide a high-quality educational experi-ence to our students,” sharedPrincipal Andrew Mulloy.“Quality physical educationis a part of the mission of St.John the Baptist CatholicSchool to educate the wholechild: the intellectual, phys-ical, spiritual and emo-tional.”

Notes from Nicole, Interior Designerat Kimps ACE Hardware With the holiday decorations packed away suddenly everythingaround the house just looks plain. Winter is the perfect time toredecorate, clean, and reorganize. Sometimes it’s just a matterof finding the motivation to get started. Instead of spendingyour time watching HGTV for ideas, it may just be time to dig inand get that to-do list done. Not sure where to start? Come see

your neighbors at ACE. We love to-do lists and sharing ideas. You will never get itfinished if you don’t start.

I know you have that bedroom you have been waiting to paint or kitchen to update. You know, the room with the color swatches all over the walls. Simple, let’s start withsome new bedding and pick your paint color from there. What about changing thecolor of your cabinets? If you have a piece of artwork that you love that doesn’t reallyfit anywhere in your house decorate around that. Don’t throw out any furniture untilyou are sure that it couldn’t be painted, refinished, and reused in your new designidea. We have lots of samples in store to look at to take the guess work and fear outof using new products.

Lighting can totally change the feel of any room. It may be as simple as changing coldlight bulbs to the new varieties that are available. I love the new vintage look bulbs.Nothing dates a room more than the old brass fixtures, but we carry a variety ofmetallic paints and different finishes to update them without the expense of replacing.Even replacing them is a pretty simple task that could really make a big impact.

One idea always leads to another, and soon, your total design is complete. I know itnever goes quite as smooth as the makeovers on HGTV, but we can help. The rightproducts and the right advice will make those changes seem easy. Come in and getsome design ideas from your neighbors, ACE.

Winter will go by faster and you can mark some things off your to do list!

The Howard-SuamicoSchool District and Board ofEducation is grateful for thetremendous support we re-ceive from you, our commu-nity. This support began over

50 years ago when a groupfrom these communitieschose to create somethingthat would serve not onlytheir own children but alsothe children of future genera-

community continued to sup-port the district during ourtimes of growth. This makesit possible to maintain andexpand the education, pro-grams, and opportunities of-fered to today’s students–thefuture leaders of our commu-nities.

The strong relationships

created between the districtand the communities makegreater things possible for allof us. In the past few years, the school board has ex-pressed appreciation by rec-ognizing individuals, teams, coaches, and a quick thinkinggroup of life savers. Morerecently we recognized stu-dent leaders, business leadersand volunteers. However, our district and the commu-nities are filled with morestories that deserve recogni-

As an investor, your maingoals will change at differenttimes in your life. Duringyour working years, you needto grow as many resources aspossible for retirement. Onceyou retire, however, you willlikely need to focus more ongetting income from your in-vestments. But what are youroptions?

There’s no shortage of in-come-producing investments,of course. You might imme-diately think of bonds, whichcan provide regular interestpayments and probablepreservation of principal, pro-vided the bonds are consid-

ered “investment grade.”Still, if interest rates are lowwhen you retire–as they havebeen for several years now–bonds might not provide youwith as much income as youneed. And just as importantly, the income you receive frommost bonds won’t rise overtime, leaving you susceptibleto inflation and the loss ofpurchasing power.

Consequently, you mayalso need to explore othertypes of income-generatingvehicles, including dividend-paying stocks and real estateinvestment trusts (REITs).

Some stocks have not onlypaid but also increased theirdividends for many consecu-tive years. These stocks havehistorically provided the po-tential for rising income tohelp combat inflation and aretypically well-run companiesthat strive to reward their in-vestors. Nonetheless, youneed to recognize that eventhese stocks are not obligatedto pay you dividends, andthey are free to lower or dis-continue them at any timewithout notice.

Now, let’s turn to a secondtype of potential income-pro-ducing asset: Real estate in-vestment trusts (REITs).

Different types of REITsare available. For example, equity REITs invest in andown commercial properties, such as hotels and shoppingcenters, while mortgageREITs, as the name suggests, own and invest in propertymortgages. Is one form ofREIT better than another? There’s no simple answer. Onthe one hand, mortgageREITs are considered riskierthan equity REITs. However, mortgage REITs often payquite large dividends, al-though the payout can be in-consistent. (Like all REITs,mortgage REITs must pay90% of their taxable incometo investors in the form ofdividends. Due to this re-quirement, REITs generallyneed to raise capital to fi-nance their growth plans, andthis necessity can affect theirshare prices.)

Other factors, such aschanging interest rates, willaffect the value of mortgageand equity REITs differently.Specifically, rising interestrates will likely cause themarket value of the propertymortgages inside mortgageREITs to fall, whereas equityREITs, which own actualbuildings, might actually ben-efit if the Federal Reserveraises interest rates, as such amove would indicate a strongeconomy, more jobs andgreater demand for officespace. In the short term, though, even equity REITscan react negatively to an in-terest-rate increase. But overthe long term, this movementcan be offset by the benefitsof earnings and dividendgrowth driven by a growingeconomy.

Clearly, there’s much tothink about when consideringpotential income-producingoptions such as bonds, divi-dend-paying stocks andREITs. Ultimately, you willneed to weigh the merits andrisks of these investments–in-cluding interest rate risk, credit risk and market risk–and determine which of them,or which combination ofthem, are most appropriatefor your needs.
