914 Gas Emissions, Certification Overview

Certification is required on all stationary engines less than or equal to 25 hp regardless of fuel

used.

For engines greater than 25 hp:

Certifications is required by engine manufacturer for

 Gasoline engines

 Rich-burn LPG engines

Certification is voluntary by engine manufacturer for

914 Gas Gas Train, Shut-Off Valve and Pressure Regulator

Shut-Off Valve

The shut off valve represents the first stage in the gas train.

In addition to the ignition system, this device becomes the safety to shut down the

engine by simply cutting off the fuel supply.

The gas inlet port is ¾” for the G914L04 or 1” for the G914L06 and TCG914L06

models.

Natural Gas Inlet

Pressure Regulator

The “Zero” Pressure Regulator receives a gas pressure from 12” to 14” H2O and

reduces the gas pressure level to 0” H2O.

Outlet pressure to the fuel stepper motor is preset and sealed to 0” H2O

(-0.25” to +0.25”) during the engine production and engine testing process.

Inlet and outlet ports are 1.0” NPT thread.

Fuel Stepper Motor

After the pressure regulator, the fuel stepper motor becomes the next component

of the fuel metering sub system. The stepper motor determines the mixture of the

air-fuel ratio.

The motor gets the signal out of the Engine Control Module (ECM) and varies the

amount of gas mixed with air by the following venturi.

Pressure Regulator

Venturi Mixer (Carb)

The venturi is the third and last subsystem of the fuel metering system.

At this stage the gas gets mixed with the air and flows through the throttle into the

combustion area of the 914.

In conjunction with the pressure regulator and the fuel stepper, the venturi

provides precise control of the desired fuel-air-ratio in response to the oxygen

sensor located in the exhaust system.

Throttle System

After the venturi, the air-to-fuel mixture passes through the throttle, which

controls the quantity of air-fuel-ratio according to the load and speed of the

engine.

The throttle has an effective diameter of 40 mm and is operated “fly-by-

wire”. The needed position / angle of the throttle valve is controlled by a

changing voltage from 0 to 12 Volt.

The throttle opening position will be relayed to the Engine Control Module

914 Gas Emission Control System

Air-Fuel-Ratio and Ignition Timing

The G914 is equipped with an advanced monitoring and ignition system in order to run the air-

fuel-ratio precisely. This technology ensures minimized exhaust gas emissions and compliance

with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The air-fuel ratio quality will be monitored by the first oxygen sensor in the exhaust system,

which is located between the engine and the catalyst.

Exhaust gas quality will be controlled by the second oxygen sensor, mounted behind the

catalyst.

The key to the low emissions of any DEUTZ G914 is the close loop system managed by the

Engine Control Module. Ignition timing and air-to-fuel ratio are constantly monitored and

Engine Control Module. Ignition timing and air-to-fuel ratio are constantly monitored and

adjusted according to speed and load.

Utilized sensors consist of the following:

Magnetic Pick Up speed sensor (MPU), located at the pulley and flywheel

Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP), inside the intake manifold, behind the throttle

Pre Catalyst O2-Sensor (UEGO), between engine and catalyst

Post Catalyst O2-Sensor (HEGO), after catalyst

Oil Temperature (OILT), regular sensors comparable to Diesel Engines

Lube Oil Pressure (LOP) , regular sensors comparable to Diesel Engines

Cylinder Head Temperature (CYL) , regular sensors comparable to Diesel Engines

914 Gas Ignition System

Ignition Control

The ignition timing will be constantly adjusted to the individual load and speed

under all circumstances; this process will be monitored by the central Engine

Control Module (ECM).

The DEUTZ G914 is equipped with double high energy ignition coils. Each

unit supplies two spark plugs / cylinders with electric energy.

Speed signal will be picked up magnetically at the flywheel. An additional

index hole provides information on the top dead center (TDC) of the

Catalytic Converter

DEUTZ is using a 3-Way Catalyst for the EAT System of the G914

The specified heavy duty catalyst from DCL is designed for tough applications,

such as underground applications.

The Catalyst is used to reduced exhaust gas emissions:

Nitrogen oxides to nitrogen and oxygen:

2NOX→ xO2 + N2
