President Obama and his family welcome guests to the 2012 Easter Egg Roll.

This year marks the 135th White House Easter Egg Roll to be held on April 1, 2013.

If you and your family are going to be in the Wash-ington, D.C. area in the next week, you might see children rolling eggs on the White House lawn that day. Sorry, you won’t be able to join in the games because tickets to the event are received through an online lottery that started on Feb. 21st and closed on Feb. 25th. Winners were announced March 1st.

This year’s theme is “Be Healthy, Be Active, Be You,” which coincides with First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move initiative. The estimate is that more than 35,000 people will be on the South Lawn participating in games, stories, singing, dancing, as well as the egg rolling.

Commemorative EggsThere is a chance to feel like part of the D.C.

activities if you go online to www.whitehouse.gov/easterEggRoll the day of the event and check out the interactive opportunities at the site, like the an-nual poster contest.

You can order a souvenir wooden egg of the 2013 Egg Roll. Each egg is brightly painted in either pur-ple, blue, yellow or pink and includes the stampled signatures of the President and First Lady. This year you can also get a teal egg for “Bo” the First Dog, whose signature, of course, is his paw print. The fi ve egg set comes in an eco-friendly colorful box. You have to order all four eggs in order to get the Bo egg. You can order eggs on the White House site or phone 800-420-7545 to order.

And, in case you didn’t know, the eggs are produced and sold by the National Park Foundation to help support the egg roll, because the White House is actually one of our coun-try’s national parks.

And they’re off! Children start the 2012 Egg Roll.

History of the Egg RollingIt seems that the “who thought of it fi rst?” ques-

tions is a bit fuzzy. Did Dolly Madison really suggest public egg rolling? Maybe…and there might have been egg rolling parties during President Lincoln’s term. The thing is, egg rolling back then was done on the grounds of the Capitol. By 1876, however, a Senate Bill prohibited egg rolling there to protect the turf.

In 1878, President and Mrs. Hayes offered up their “backyard” for the children, and the tradition of egg rolling on the South Lawn was born.

Only war ad bad weather has prevented the egg rolling from happening; World War II proved the longest cancellation. Each president and fi rst lady had something different to contribute to the day, such as using spoons from the White House kitchen for the egg rolling race introduced by Mrs. Patricia Nixon.

By 1981, Mrs. Nancy Reagan added the “egg hunt,” 1993 Hillary Rodham Clinton expanded egg rolling to the Ellipse and added more activities for both children and adults, and in 2001, Laura Bush reintroduced the petting zoo to the South Lawn.

Let us not forget the Easter Bunny, a most impor-

tant presence at the egg rolling, and who is usually played by a White House staffer, dressed of course, in a special White House bunny outfi t. This tradition was introduced in 1969 by Pat Nixon. The bunny is not supposed to be seen without his costume head, and one famous rabbit turned out to be a “she.” The wife of President Reagan’s Attorney General Edwin Meese III (Ursula) loved the job so much, she per-formed for six years and earned her the nickname of “The Meester Bunny.”

American Girl Doll Tea PartyMichigan City’s Barker Mansion will host its an-

nual American Girl Doll Tea Party, Sat., April 20 at 2 p.m. Barker Mansion was the childhood home of Catherine Barker, a Michigan City heir and philan-thropist who gave her home to Michigan City for use as a cultural center and museum.

This year’s featured doll is Molly, a lively patri-otic girl growing up during World War II. The war has brought many changes to Molly’s life as her fa-ther is overseas in the Army and her mother starts working in an airplane factory. Molly learns the war means sacrifi ce, self-reliance, cooperation and hold-ing onto hope. A full-sized Molly will be featured dressed in her school pageant Miss Victory costume. Girls are invited to bring their American Girl doll or their favorite doll to this event.

The afternoon’s program begins with a brief tea party etiquette lesson, followed by typical World War II refreshments of sugar free apple tarts, thumbprint cookies, s’mores, cupcakes, hot tea and lemonade served in Barker Mansion’s elegant Drawing Room. There will be chairs at the tables for each girl’s doll. A fun craft, favors and viewing of the movie, “Molly” complete the afternoon. Ameri-can Girl books and American Girl play scenes will be for sale.

The cost is $8 for girls (age fi ve and above) and $12 for adults. A minimum of one adult attending per two children is required. Pre-paid reservations are necessary, as seating is limited. Reservations may be made beginning April 1. For more infor-mation, phone (219) 873-1520. Barker Mansion, 631 Washington St. is one block east of Lighthouse Place Premium Outlet Mall.

Diana and her husband, Jim, reside in Western Springs, IL, where they rehabbed a historical home built in 1891. The beauty of the items left in this

home are captured in several of her paint-ings.

Her love of art was fi rst infl uenced by a 6th grade art teacher and her most formal education was in high school. Other than studying art demos online, she consid-ers herself to be self-taught.

• From Wed., April 10 through Fri., May 10, the ShowPlace Gallery will exhibit a variety of artwork from Buchanan, Niles and Brandywine High School students of Sandra Miller, Lisetta Zahm and Rory McLaughlin, respectively. Jewish Film FestivalPurdue University North Central Odyssey Arts

and Cultural Events Series, with the Michigan City Public Library and the Irving Levin Jewish Cul-tural Fund of Sinai Temple, will present a Jewish Film Festival on Sun., April 7 from 1:30-4:30 p.m. at the Michigan City Public Library, 100 E. 4th St., Michigan City. The fi lm festival is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be enjoyed during a coffee klatch and cake break.

The fi lms feature differing topics that look at various aspects of life from three very different per-spectives - that of an 88-year-old man, a 13-year-old boy and a very startled Muslim who discovers he was born a Jew.

“B-Boy” is a 15 minute fi lm about Eli, a typical Bar Mitzvah boy. But once he is put on the competi-tive breakdance fl oor, he’s E-Break, part of nation-ally recognized breakdancing crew. This was winner of the short fi lm competition at the Boston Jewish Film Festival.

“Music Man Murray” presents a 22 minute fi lm that tells the story of Murray Gershenz, who at age 88 fi gures it’s time to sell his L.A. record store, fi lled with a half-million records. This also won at the Boston Jewish Film Festival.

“The Infi del” is rated R for strong language. Chicago Street Theatre Announces 59th Season

About Chicago Street TheatreChicago Street Theatre is a 130-seat theatre lo-

cated at 154 W. Chicago Street in Valparaiso. It fea-tures brand new stadium seating, which makes it an incredible space to enjoy live theatre. For more infor-mation about the theatre, visit www.chicagostreet.org or phone 219-464-1636.

A doctor with two very different personalities. A family grieving a devastating loss. A pair of young lovers kept apart by the hatred of others. A med-dling mother and her lonely daughter. A nervous bookworm with an iconic ally.

These are the stories that will be told on the stage at Valparaiso’s Chicago Street Theatre during its 59th Season, which was announced last week.

The season begins this August with “The World’s Worst Fairy Godmother” (August-September), fol-lowed by “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” (October), “The Beauty Queen of Leenane” (January-February, 2014), “Play It Again, Sam” (April, 2014), “Rabbit Hole” (May-June, 2014) and “Romeo and Juliet” (July, 2014).

“We are really pleased with the diversity of our 59th Season,” said Chicago Street Theatre Artis-tic Chair Traci Brant, who is also co-directing The Beauty Queen of Leenane. “The plays range from classic Shakespeare to cutting edge contemporary drama and we have incredibly talented people in-volved with all of them.”

“The World’s Worst Fairy Godmother,” by Bruce Coville, follows a Fairy Godmother who is given a tough case when she is assigned to a girl who is con-vinced she is perfect and, as a result, nearly unbear-able.

A fresh version of the Robert Louis Stevenson classic “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” will serve as Chi-cago Street Theatre’s Halloween show. The adap-tation, written by Jeffrey Hatcher, puts a modern twist on the Victorian tale.

“The interesting premise of this one is that the author supposes that Hyde is not 100 percent evil and Jekyll is not 100 percent good,” said Bob Cooley, who is directing the Chicago Street Theatre produc-tion. “And as they come to realize that is where the drama unfolds.”

“The Beauty Queen of Leenane” will mark the third time that Chicago Street Theatre has brought the work of playwright Martin McDonagh to the stage. The play tells the darkly comic tale of Mau-reen Folan, a plain and lonely woman in her early forties, and Mag, her manipulative aging mother.

“It is incredibly hilarious and tragic and all sorts of strange things rolled into one, as Martin Mc-Donagh is,” Brant said. “It’s a great piece for actors and I think it’s really going to be an incredible expe-rience for the audiences.”

“Play It Again, Sam,” by Woody Allen, will be di-rect by Jason Utesch. The classic comedy follows the exploits of Allan Felix, an insecure man who gets advice about women from an imaginary Hum-phrey Bogart.

“Rabbit Hole,” by David Lindsay-Abaire, won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize and will be directed by Dave Pera. The play tells the story of how an accident turns a family’s world upside down.

“It examines the issues of how we deal with trag-edy, and how the family and the extended family handle something of that nature,” Pera said.

Next summer will mark the second time Chi-cago Street Theatre has offered the wildly popular Shakespeare in the Park, featuring “Romeo and Ju-liet.”

“I think a lot of people have studied Romeo and Juliet in school, or been forced to read it and it was really never intended to be done that way,” said Eric Brant, who is directing the production. “It was supposed to be played and experienced. So I’m re-ally excited that we’re going to get another run at Shakespeare in the Park and be able to bring a clas-sic Shakespearean play that will connect with new audiences and maybe be some peoples’ fi rst experi-ence with William Shakespeare.”

Chicago Street Theatre is in the midst of its 58th season, and is currently rehearsing “The Graduate,” which will run from April 12 to 27. For tickets, or for more information, phone 219-464-1636 or visit www.chicagostreet.org

In Memoriam John Tracy, who coached Marquette’s boys bas-

ketball team to 103 wins in eight seasons, died Sat., March 16th, at Franciscan St. Anthony Health. He was 67.

Tracy died as a result of complications from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, which he had been battling for some time.

Tracy coached at Marquette in two separate stints, from 1968-73 and from 1989-92. But before, in between and after, Tracy had a major impact on the game of basketball and those around him.

Tracy graduated from Brother Rice in Chicago as one of Illinois’ most prolifi c scorers of all-time and attended Notre Dame on a basketball scholar-ship. Late in his career with the Irish, Tracy got his coaching career started with the Notre Dame fresh-man team.

Immediately after leaving South Bend, Tracy came to Marquette.

Tracy went on to coach at St. Ignatius in Chicago, a school Marquette now plays during its regular season, and was Dean of Students there up until recently.

The wake and funeral service was held last Sat-urday in Chicago. He will be sorely missed by all his friends at Marquette Catholic High School.

MCAS Magnet Schools Accepting Applications for 2013-14

Lake Hills and Pine Elementary Schools, two Michigan City Area Schools elementary buildings that serve students from across the region as Mag-net Schools, are now accepting applications for the 2012-13 school year.

Like all MCAS elementary schools, the Magnet Schools maintain a primary focus on core academic subjects, including language arts, mathematics, and science. But they are also designed to draw students to them – like a ‘magnet’ – because of a themed approach to the curriculum and programs.

Lake Hills Elementary School (201 Ferguson Road) is a “STEM” Magnet School – centered on Sci-ence, Technology, Engineering, and Math.

Pine Elementary School (1660 County Line Road) is a Magnet School for the Visual and Performing Arts.

Both schools retain their current neighborhood boundaries, serving K-5 students through the Mag-net programs. In addition, each school will accept approximately 30 students in Kindergarten from other attendance areas across the MCAS district. The schools will fi ll open slots in the upper grades, as well.

MCAS also encourages families from outside the school district and from private or charter schools to explore this option. “Many children may have an interest in the arts or a natural curiosity about their world, and Lake Hills and Pine truly engag-es them,” says MCAS Superintendent Dr. Barbara Eason-Watkins. “These specialized programs are providing many families in our community with ad-ditional choices for their children’s education.”

Magnet School applications for children enter-ing grades K-5 next year are due by 4:00 p.m. on April 19, 2013. (Students who live within the neigh-borhood boundaries for Lake Hills and Pine – and those who currently attend as magnet school stu-dents – do not need to apply.) Library Expanding Tumblebooks ServiceThe LaPorte County Public Library has an online

collection of electronic talking picture books, read-alongs, and games called Tumblebooks. This service teaches young children and reluctant readers the joys of reading in a fun, interactive way.

With over 17 thousand book views in 2012, the Library has expanded this service with the edition of Tumblebooks Cloud and Tumblebooks Cloud Ju-nior. In addition to the existing Tumblebooks, which provides the talking animated picture books and read-alongs, the updated service will include chap-ter books, nonfi ction, videos, and graphic novels.

Tumblebooks Cloud Junior was created for read-ers looking for all the children’s classics and read-along titles who wish to go beyond the picture book collection in the Tumblebook Library. Tumblebook Cloud is an online collection of eBooks and read-along chapter books, graphic novels, educational videos, and audio books intended for high school and middle school readers.

More and more readers are choosing eBooks as their preferred method of reading. As a result, the library is working to provide expanded access to these types of materials.

All these Tumblebooks services are compatible with smartphones, tablets, pc’s, and more without download or installation of any software or app. The only thing needed is an internet connection. All books are available with unlimited access, all the time, from any device just by visiting laportelibrary.org.

Angelopolis by Danielle TrussoniThis is the second in a planned trilogy that start-

ed with the book Angelology (which, by the way, USA Today called, “Stellar...A thrill ride best de-scribed as The Da Vinci Code meets Raiders of the Lost Ark.”)

Usually, but not always, you can pick up the thread of the story in the second of a series of books. In this case, I found I would have liked to have read the fi rst book be-fore settling into this one. Angelopo-lis is still a stand-alone book except for some details probably explained better in the fi rst book, but which in this one, you had to fi gure out by yourself.

Having said that, let me explain a little of the titles of these two books which probably have you guessing...

Yes, we’re talking about angels here. However these are not the beautiful, kind and loving angels your mother told you about as a child. No, these are a breed of an-gels who mated with humans and produced the Nephilim, a nasty bunch of “dark” angels who want to take over the human race and make it their own. But in their human form they are attractive, alluring even, and able to make humans bend to their will.

Enter the angelologists, people who were trained to identify the Nephilim, hunt them down, study them, and kill them. Verlaine, however, didn’t have to be trained. His eyes were able to see the angels as they really were, wings and all, not disguised as mere mortals as they appeared to most people. And he learned to hunt them, and kill them...

That is, until he saw Evangeline, an angel of such beauty and grace and of such a kind nature that he became so confused and began to question the valid-ity of his job.

He loses sight of her in New York City and sees her again ten years later in Paris, which is where this book picks up. Before his eyes she is captured

by Eno, the Angelologist’s most-wanted angel for many years. She is defi nitely on the A-list of tough Nephlilm angels, crafty, so far impossible to catch, and... deadly.

Before Eno catches her, Evangeline slips a Fa-berge egg into Verlaine’s hand. The story moves on from the City of Light to Russia, then to Siberia via the Trans-Siberian Railroad and the shores of the

Black Sea, taking in the history of the Bible right on up to the Russian Revolution and the present day struggle of the angelologists to dis-cover the secret of the Nephilim and how to stop them.

As Verlaine and his fellow ange-lologolists go off in different direc-tions, following various leads, it is interesting to note that each chap-ter in the book is named for one of the nine circles of hell in Dante’s In-ferno. Hmmm...

It sounds like a lot to take in, and most fantasy books are, but after all is said and done, I found it an in-teresting trip as I fell deeper under the spell of the author’s fi ne writing skills. She found a way to take all these elements, both historical and mythical, and put them in a cohe-sive, elegantly told style that, half-

way through the story, I was almost ready to believe the whole premise!

Angelopolis reads like the best literary prose. It doesn’t scream at you or insult your intelligence. It draws you in quietly until you realize that you’ve forgotten that cup of hot water still sitting in the microwave waiting for you to make tea!

What I’m trying to say is that while I had made up my mind in the fi rst few pages to not like An-gelopolis, I ended on the last page with a satisfy-ing feeling of having read something very different from a very talented author.

Had enough of vampire books? Let’s take on the angels!

Till next time, happy reading!

“Becoming an Outdoors-Woman”Women can choose their own adventure at an

outdoor sports workshop with courses ranging from shotgun shooting to fl y-fi shing.

The 18th annual Becoming an Outdoors-Woman is May 3-5 at Ross Camp in West Lafayette. The workshop is open to women ages 18 and older and limited to 100 participants. Registration began March 1st at IndianaBOW.com and costs $185.

The program is designed for women to learn out-door skills in a relaxed, low-pressure environment. Participants will choose four activities from more than two dozen offerings. New for 2013 is a class on kayaking.

The workshop is for women who have never tried these activities, but have hoped for an opportunity to learn; who have tried them but are beginners hoping to improve; or who know how to do some of the activities, but would like to try new ones.

Women who enjoy the camaraderie of like-mind-ed individuals and who seek time away to reconnect with nature are also prime candidates for BOW.
