Aurora $865,000

Contimued from the cover

With the arrival of the railway in 1853, Aurora was quickly becoming an industrial focal point in the York Region. By 1863, Aurora with a population of 700 people quickly continued to expand and the housing market continued to expand with it. In 1888, Aurora’s population had grown to a stagger-ing 2,107 people.

Influential and historical architects of this time seemed to thrive; building hous-es nestled in the lush, green landscapes of Aurora. It’s believed in 1861, local architect and builder Henry Harris was responsible for influencing a new architectural trend in the then young and flourishing Aurora, pro-ducing the Hillary House. Harris embraced a style referred to as Picturesque Gothic, fash-ioned after a picture he saw in a book called, Architecture of Country Houses.  Gothic Revival noted for exquisite detail patterned brickwork, roomy verandahs, pointed Ca-thedral style arches, and ornate scrollwork became a continued theme in Aurora adding to its charm and historical uniqueness.

The cost for a new home in Aurora in the

late 1800’s was presumably expensive for newcomers. Today, according to the owner of RE/MAX York Group Reality, Bill Jenkins, the average cost of a new home in Aurora is $566,548.

What began, as a hamlet at the crossroads of Wellington and Yonge St. is now a thriving, affluent, industrial and commercial town located north of Toronto and is part of the Greater Toronto Area spanning a whopping

49.61 km squared, with a population of 56,931 people.

Should the past 150 years be any indication of what is to come, it seems only fitting to end this article with ‘And they lived happily ever after.’

 Happy Birthday Aurora!

Decorating with cork

ork is a versatile and relatively in-expensive material that lends itself well to different decorating and home-use

applications. Cork grows as the bark of the Cork Oak tree, which is grown and harvested mostly in Portugal. Cork is harvested about every 9 or 10 years and is allowed to dry for 1 to 2 years. It is then boiled to remove any toxins and is cut and dried for use. People use cork in various ways. Cork wine stoppers are some of the first things that come to mind when envisioning cork. Cork bulletin boards are another common use.

However, cork is also used around the house, especially for flooring. Because the cork bark will regenerate on a tree naturally without damage to the rest of the tree, cork is an environmentally friendly material to use. The material is impervious to pressure, so it doesn’t dent and the air trapped within the cork cell structure makes it strong, yet soft underfoot. Cork also is a good insulator and an effective heat/cold conductor. It also absorbs vibrations, making it an effective sound buffer. In addition to using cork on a floor, individuals can use it for an accent wall. In a teenager’s room, a cork wall can be used as a large bulletin board for photos and memorabilia. Some wine connoisseurs like to make serving trays or backsplashes out of cork wine stoppers, particularly from favorite vintages. Cork resists water and stains, which makes it a good material to use in kitchens and bathrooms as well.

Take control of mold growthoisture buildup can increase the prob-ability of mold growth. For home-owners, mold growth can lead to poor

indoor air quality and worse. Using a modern insulation material, such as spray foam insulation, in crawl spaces helps reduce airborne irritants and promotes

better indoor air quality. Properly insulated crawl spaces control moisture and air seal and save on energy bills while improving occupant comfort. The United States Department of Energy suggests homeowners properly insulate the crawl space within their homes to protect

from two main problems. Firstly, by main-taining an acceptable temperature within the crawl space during winter, homeowners can avoid cold, uncomfortable floors above. Secondly, removing excess humidity in crawl spaces during the warmer summer months can decrease the chances of mold growth or buckling hardwood floors above. Spray foam insulation can help reduce the likelihood of moisture gathering within crawl spaces. Left uninsulated, homeowners run the risk of compromising their home’s durability and comfort not to mention pos-sible unexpected repair costs.

ouise Garin, a local King artist, creates wonderful art inspired by her surroundings; and her art

is sure to surround your home beau-tifully. Born in Montreal to an artist mother, Garin never thought that she would also become an artist. She had always been a creative person and has taken art courses at the Ontario College of Art, but it was her surroundings that really inspired her to pick up a brush. Garin takes inspiration from the places that she lives, visits, and the people that she meets. She began to paint while

living in Mexico with her husband. Much of her art depicts the beau-

tiful desert landscapes of the area and the locals that inhabit the land.

“I am always experimenting with lots of different subjects.” She says as she points to beautiful land-scapes rich with unique colours, as well as intricate portraits, the latter being her first love artistically. She experiments with colour and differ-ent techniques but still maintains her own style. Louise regularly visits local events to showcase her work, most recently being Polo for Heart. She loves to play with light and dark in her paintings, as well as colours and subjects making her an ex-tremely versatile artist.

Louise has painted beautiful landscapes of properties in Auro-ra, and King and is available for commissioned work. Her paintings are a delightful way to spruce up sparse walls in your home; they are rich in colour so your walls don’t have to be. With one of her pieces in your home you will truly be lost in her work. prOS and COnS of automatic irrigation systemsater is essential to keeping a lawn or gar-den in good health. Thanks to irrigation systems, watering has become a lot less

hands-on. An irrigation sprinkler or drip system takes much of the work out of watering a land-scape. But before any digging takes place, home-owners should learn about the advantages and disadvantages of irrigation systems.

Advantages One of the most obvious advantages is the time savings afforded by an automatic sprinkler or drip irrigation system. Once installed, many systems can be set to a timer to water at specific time inter-vals and on certain days of the week. This means there’s no need to worry about forgetting to water the lawn and coming back from vacation to find

crisp, yellow grass. Another advantage is that irrigation systems, particularly the drip type, can be positioned so that water is more effectively targeted where it is needed. Nozzles can be adjusted and underground drip tubes will deliver water right to the roots, rather than spraying walkways and driveways. Another advantage is that automatic irrigation systems are generally hidden from view, which means there are no unsightly hoses stretched across the lawn and no more tripping hazards. Sprinkler heads pop up to spray and then retract when the job is done. Underground drip systems do their work out of view. For families with young children and pets who share outdoor spaces, auto-matic systems may be a safer option.

Disadvantages The primary disadvantage associated with a sprinkler system is the expense. These systems can be quite costly depending on the size of the property. Furthermore, portions of the lawn will have to be dug up to install pipework and at-tach it to the plumbing system of the home. This can equate to days or weeks without use of the yard. Afterwards, the landscaping will have to be repaired. It is best to install an irrigation system prior to the installation of sod or extensive landscaping because some of it will have to be torn up. Home-owners who already have pristine yards may be turned off by this reality. Even the most efficient sprinkler systems can have their pitfalls. Wind can wreak havoc on sprinklers, directing water in the wrong direc-tion. Underground pests may damage water-de-livery systems, resulting in water pooling or bro-ken parts. The repairs to fix an irrigation system can be much more costly than replacing a dam-aged garden hose. Irrigation systems have their advantages and disadvantages, and homeowners should weigh their options before installing a new system.

SaFeTY TipS

for the savvy yard sale shopper

ummer is here and garage sales and flea markets abound. But as you search for that perfect treasure, be sure to keep safety in

mind. Second-hand items, especially electronics, building supplies, appliances and helmets, may carry certain risks if damaged or used. If you are planning on reselling consumer items, check the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Web site for a guide on things that can and cannot be sold, and for product recalls. CSA Group, a leading certification and testing organization, offers these safety tips for yard sale shoppers.

► Avoid electrical or gas products if a label from a recognized certification organization, such as CSA Group, is missing. Look closely at the mark to ensure it matches the design and colour of cer-tification marks from the same organization on other similar products.

► Check wiring and extension cords for wear and damage. In particular, look for worn insula-tion and splices on the cord and loose or exposed parts on the plug.

► Avoid purchasing used bicycle, hockey or con-struction helmets, as you don’t know their history

or what damage may be hidden from plain view.Counterfeit or illegal goods

► Counterfeiters often use flea markets to ped-dle fake goods. Packaging on counterfeits is often poorly designed or has only partial illustrations. Misspellings and unclear printing on products and labels may be another indicator of a fake product.

► Brand-name companies want you to know whose product you’re buying, so look for a rec-ognized name. Also, look for return addresses or company contact information on packages.

► Check the “look and feel” of goods. Fake prod-ucts often seem light and flimsy.

It’s all about texture for today’s hardwood floorsxperts in the hardwood flooring industry are seeing a major shift in the way consum-ers are now choosing their floors, as colour

is no longer king. Texture has emerged as the new “colour” when it comes to the driving force be-hind wood flooring selections. “For years, colour was always the top consid-eration for people looking for a hardwood floor. But over the last few years, texture has overtak-en colour as the new driver. The reason behind this movement is that texture stimulates our senses with both tactile and visual elements,” ex-plained Michel Collin, Marketing Director of Mercier Wood Flooring.

The latest handscraped and distressed hard-wood floors are good examples of how popu-lar textures have become with discerning wood flooring consumers. According to Collin, there’s

is a big demand for textured wood floors across North America, where homeowners are looking to feature the distressed look of barn wood, prom-inent knots or the natural sculptural and undulat-ing lines of boards planed the old fashioned way.

“The texture trend is very hot with homeown-ers today and we have a feeling it’s here to stay,” added designer Marie Francois of Dolce Interieur in Montreal. To keep up with the demand for this growing texture trend in hardwood floors, manufacturers such as Mercier have developed new hardwood series featuring these sought-after tactile and vi-sual elements. This year Mercier’s Nature collection is offer-ing even more textures than in years past, as its new “Pub Series” features hardwood floors that perfectly capture the essence of a well-worn floor.

With names like Courvoisier, Spirits, Stout and Malt, the series replicates the unique charm of an Irish pub where its floors have seen it all and lived to tell the tale. Mercier’s “Handscraped” series features a hand-sanded feel that gives the floor deep charac-ter. A traditional effect shines though in the beau-tiful knots, a deeply distinctive touch that ties any room together effortlessly.

“When it comes to flooring texture treatments, such as handscraping, they should be considered as art forms, timeless, unique works of art tailored to your home,” added Collin. Design tip: A rustic scrape will result in a more “distressed” look and is an ideal choice for an ac-tive family. A more sculpted floor with minor sur-face interruption is considered “classic” and fits perfectly in a contemporary decor.
